Maintenance of grass pitches

  • Well-maintained, dog-friendly farm campsite in Cambridgeshire fenland
  • Sandringham Estate 40 minutes’ drive; Heacham beach 55 minutes
  • Best of both worlds - In between nature and local amenaties
Found in a quiet corner of the rural Cambridgeshire Fens – close enough to the borders of Lincolnshire and Norfolk for days of adventure in three different counties – Hawthorne Farm Wisbech is a well-maintained and peaceful sort of place, with grass pitches overlooking rolling fields. One of the biggest USPs here is the fact that dogs are welcomed on site with open arms. They are allowed everywhere on the camping fields except the leafy garden around the pond, and they get their own special field for doing the zoomies – but of course, please be sure to clean up after them. Another bonus here is the site’s proximity to local amenities. Yes, it’s tucked into peaceful countryside, but the supermarkets of Wisbech are only 15 minutes’ drive away, there are farm shops for buying up barbecue goodies within 20 minutes, and a decent sprinkling of pubs and restaurants in around the same distance. A third advantage of staying here – this one is weather-dependent, however – is that if the skies are cloudless, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular sunrises and sunsets, and after dark the Milky Way will dance its way across the heavens. And of course, there are loads of quiet country lanes for bike rides, as well as fenland walks straight from the pitches. However, if you’re keen on exploring far and wide around the Fens, the site owners advise that it’s best to have a car.

What customers say

Hawthorne Farm is praised for its tranquil, remote location with stunning views, spacious and flat pitches, and excellent dog-friendly facilities including a dedicated field. Visitors highlight the exceptional cleanliness of the well-maintained facilities, including hot showers and useful communal amenities like a kitchen and laundry. Owners are consistently described as friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The access road is frequently mentioned as poor, but this is generally seen as outside the campsite's control. The site is highly recommended for those seeking peace and quiet.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Remote site, peaceful, well kept fields and a walking area that once matured with the growth they have planted will be lovely.

Plenty of room for your pitch and we will definitely be back.

Disliked Others have mentioned the road to the site and if you are towing it is a dodgy road, but I also found a lot of the roads in the area are quite bad (tractor traffic has caused it I imagine). It is something the site cannot control but worth still pointing out so people know how to adapt driving

Electric grass pitch

Liked Another fab stay here, camping field lovely and flat and well maintained. Showers, toilets and kitchen facilities all excellent and clean. Dogs loved the dog field once again. Great place to watch the eclipse from and also the Persiod meteor shower due to the fact that there was no light pollution. Can thoroughly recommend. Good variety of wildlife in the area, was fab to watch the bats at night and also hear the owls and foxes.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Absolute hidden gem! It was very quiet and peaceful. Facilities were perfect and clean. The dog field was amazing too for our fury friends. As 2 adults and 4 pups we couldn't have asked for better. Pitch sizes were massive. As others mentioned road in was abit bumpy but slow and steady and it was fine. Staff super friendly. Can't wait to return. Oh and the views on a night were 😍 GORGEOUS!

Disliked Absolutely nothing.

Liked Fantastic space, where dogs are not only welcome but catered for.

Disliked Only downside here is the road leading in which is through no fault of Hawthorne. Just a watch out.

Liked Great spot, lots of space to pitch a tent, great facilities, very clean and quite useful to have a kettle. Lots of space to play in the adjacent field and quite quiet and tranquil first thing and in the evenings when walking about.

Local attractions

Photogenic Wisbech (15 minutes’ drive) sits on the banks of the River Nene. Have a stroll through the streets and a nose around the daily market, and then take yourselves off to see the Georgian splendour of elegant rooms at the National Trust - Peckover House and Garden. If the weather’s not playing ball with you, take the kids to the climbing walls at Fenrock Climbing Centre or learn about fenland flora and fauna in the Wisbech and Fenland Museum. For more fenland history, make a beeline for Flag Fen Archaeology Park (half an hour), showcasing a 3,500 year-old Bronze Age site and reconstructed round houses. Find out how medieval royalty lived with a visit to striking Castle Rising, and see how our present-day monarch lives with a tour of the grand apartments and gardens at Sandringham Estate (both 40 minutes). If the kids are getting bored with all this cultural stuff, restore good humour at Church Farm - Stow Bardolph (40 minutes), where they can pet the alpacas and ponies. If they’re still not happy? Head for the expansive beach at Heacham (55 minutes) for an ice cream and a bracing stroll along the dunes.
