  • Well-maintained, dog-friendly farm campsite in Cambridgeshire fenland
  • Sandringham Estate 40 minutes’ drive; Heacham beach 55 minutes
  • Best of both worlds - In between nature and local amenaties
Found in a quiet corner of the rural Cambridgeshire Fens – close enough to the borders of Lincolnshire and Norfolk for days of adventure in three different counties – Hawthorne Farm is a well-maintained and peaceful sort of place, with grass pitches overlooking rolling fields. One of the biggest USPs here is the fact that dogs are welcomed on site with open arms. They are allowed everywhere on the camping fields except the leafy garden around the pond, and they get their own special field for doing the zoomies – but of course, please be sure to clean up after them. Another bonus here is the site’s proximity to local amenities. Yes, it’s tucked into peaceful countryside, but the supermarkets of Wisbech are only 15 minutes’ drive away, there are farm shops for buying up barbecue goodies within 20 minutes, and a decent sprinkling of pubs and restaurants in around the same distance. A third advantage of staying here – this one is weather-dependent, however – is that if the skies are cloudless, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular sunrises and sunsets, and after dark the Milky Way will dance its way across the heavens. And of course, there are loads of quiet country lanes for bike rides, as well as fenland walks straight from the pitches. However, if you’re keen on exploring far and wide around the Fens, the site owners advise that it’s best to have a car.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: What a wonderful site, so clean and well maintained. There is everything you could possibly need, I feel cheated that we only stayed one night. I booked this site for its reasonable prices, but having used many site before, this was one of the best. The owners take great pride in providing the best from their site/home and we’re very friendly and helpful. Thank you

Disliked: Nothing that the owners can sort but some very bumpy roads nearby, but not a problem really.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Large flat grass pitches in a fenced area with all the facilities you would need. Showers and toilets were kept extremely clean and tidy. Plenty of hot water for use in the showers and washing up areas.Did not use all the facilities that was on offer, but there is a washing machine and dryer along with washing up sink with dish detergent, tea towels and laundry detergent for use. Owners of the site could not have been more helpful. We did not take dogs with use but the site seemed to be the most amazing dog friendly that we have ever came across including a dog walking track and area. the location of the site is rural, amazing for quiet break.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely flat, large grass pitches in fenced area. All the facilities you could need, very clean shower & toilet facilities, washing up area with washing machine & dryer available to use. Beautiful, quiet rural position. We did not have dogs with us, but seems very dog friendly with dog walking tracks. Lots of space on the beautifully kept grass for the kids to play. Friendly welcome and great value, would definitely recommend.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: This place is a star find. Only around 10 pitches and in a very rural area. The bonus is that it has a very large dog paddock for you to let you dogs off. It’s very clean and well kept. The facilities are very clean. You’ll need a good torch to get to them in the dark. Very friendly owners, nothing is to much trouble. Will stay again!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Quiet site, large, flat pitches and lovely views across countryside. Hosts are friendly and really helpful. Nice clean toilets and showers. The dog exercise area is wonderful. My dog loved racing round the clearing and bouncing in and out of the long grass. Dog waste bins and bags in various places a thoughtful addition. The site really is something special for those travelling with dogs. You do need to be organised with food and drinks as the site is fairly rural. Lovely sitting watching the sun go down and listening to wildlife.

Disliked: A minor dislike really but showers, although amazingly clean and lots of hot water, they only stay on for short bursts - a longer burst would make a big difference.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to review you stay at Hawthorne Farm we appreciate your feedback. We can only apologise that you did not feel the shower burst was not long enough. We will look into whether we can increase the length of the shower burst.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: We stayed here with our 2 teenage kids and loved absolutely everything! Hawthorn is a beautifully kept, flat as a pancake campsite, run by the loveliest people you could ever ask to meet. Steve, Linzi and Roy were so friendly and helpful, they never once passed our tent without stopping for a chat. The facilities are way above and beyond what a site of this size would normally offer. I've stayed on sites 4 times as big as Hawthorn with much less impressive/equipped facilities. The seperate paddock for dogs was superb, the freedom to let a greyhound off the lead with such confidence was brilliant. The area is so peaceful, we stayed 7 nights and are proper chilled! WiFi isn't advertised/offered and quite frankly wasn't missed, our kids have good data plans. Deffo coming back here, if only to see Roy taking his dog for a ride on the golf cart again!

Sorry that I didn't get the opportunity to say goodbye this morning. We love living here and like the fact we are able to share it with others. Thanks again for staying at Hawthone Farm.

Local attractions

Photogenic Wisbech (15 minutes’ drive) sits on the banks of the River Nene. Have a stroll through the streets and a nose around the daily market, and then take yourselves off to see the Georgian splendour of elegant rooms at the National Trust - Peckover House and Garden. If the weather’s not playing ball with you, take the kids to the climbing walls at Fenrock Climbing Centre or learn about fenland flora and fauna in the Wisbech and Fenland Museum. For more fenland history, make a beeline for Flag Fen Archaeology Park (half an hour), showcasing a 3,500 year-old Bronze Age site and reconstructed round houses. Find out how medieval royalty lived with a visit to striking Castle Rising, and see how our present-day monarch lives with a tour of the grand apartments and gardens at Sandringham Estate (both 40 minutes). If the kids are getting bored with all this cultural stuff, restore good humour at Church Farm - Stow Bardolph (40 minutes), where they can pet the alpacas and ponies. If they’re still not happy? Head for the expansive beach at Heacham (55 minutes) for an ice cream and a bracing stroll along the dunes.
