  • Peaceful five-acre rural site with pond and wildflower meadows
  • Two miles from Ely: walk there along the banks of the River Ouse
  • Mad Hatter theme for kids, including playhouse and discovery trail
You don’t have to be mad to stay here… but it’s probably best to leave your serious face at home, for there’s a healthy dose of light-heartedness built in at Mad Hatters Campsite, in the Cambridgeshire countryside two miles from Ely. Anyone with a passing knowledge of literature will already have twigged that there’s an Alice in Wonderland thing going on here. It’s mainly aimed at the small sorts, of course – in the playhouse, the curious trail and the twisty paths through the grasses – but grownups are highly encouraged to embrace it all too. Wildlife spotters of any age should have a field day here too: a wild pond and various birdboxes and feeding stations scattered around encourage visits from all sorts of native creatures. At the distinctly sensible end of things are the amenities: family-friendly touches extend to the bathroom block, where two large family showers (with clothes hooks and benches) have been installed, and heated towel rails keep the place warm. A covered washing-up area is nearby, and there’s a tap with an old sink for hosing down any mucky kids or dogs you may have in your possession. A coffee room has also been set up for those who need a caffeine kick and a quiet moment. As fab as it is to have heaps of space to roam about, stoke up campfires and play games, you may not be so delighted when it comes to lugging all your kit; with that in mind the friendly folk here have provided wheelbarrows to make moving day much easier.

Local attractions

See a spire from the site and it’s likely to be that of Ely Cathedral, two miles away: for a closer look, drive there in five minutes or (even better) walk in on the scenic path that runs along the banks of the River Ouse. Once you’ve viewed the cathedral, you can also drop in on Oliver Cromwell’s House, poke around in the antiques market and take a boat trip. For more aquatic activities, make your way to WWT (Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust) Welney nature reserve (20 minutes’ drive) to spot wetland wildlife; bounce across the crazy floating obstacles at Cambridge Aqua Park (25 minutes), or head into the centre of Cambridge (40 minutes) to propel a punt past (and hopefully not into) the colleges. Once you’ve spotted wildlife around the site, set your sights on something rather larger with a trip to Linton Zoo (50 minutes) or a day out with the nags at Newmarket Racecourse and racing museum (40 minutes). Meanwhile, the Milton Maize Maze (half an hour) is a good bet for a bit of farmyard silliness; along with the maze, there’s also duck racing, trampolining and frisbee golf.
