Edgehill Country Park: Heaps of space to run around (photo added by manager on 24/08/2022)

General

  • Countryside setting in the Cotswolds, with pubs close by
  • Easy access to Stratford, Leamington Spa, Oxford and Banbury
  • Back-to-nature site with plenty of room and surrounded by woodland

For a wild countryside setting in the middle of Shakespeare country… escape to Edgehill Country Park, a basic site set up for guests to stay in a natural setting and wildlife haven. It's near the Edge Hill escarpment, where the first major battle of the English Civil War took place, right on the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and surrounded by miles of Warwickshire countryside.

Among open fields and next to a mature woodland, plenty of wildlife spotting is around this relaxed back-to-nature site, which has loads of room for kids (and grownups) to wear themselves out. The site has been kept deliberately basic to be as natural as possible, but has an amenities block with toilets, one shower and a washing-up area. There's also a marquee available on site where you can hang out in inclement weather. Pitches here are pretty spacious at an average of 8 x 9 metres; guests will need to make sure their vehicle and all kit fits within their allocated space.

Handily, four local pubs that serve food are within walking distance – two via roads and two across fields. There's also a small village five minutes' drive away for shops, a butcher, more pubs and a takeaway.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Group bookings of 3 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of 5 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Single-sex bookings of 4 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

This is a back to nature site with no lights and no electricity. The toilet lights are on timed sensors from solar gain.

Basic site for a stopover. Would not stay again. Was expensive at £27.17/09/2023

Ok to find and clearly marked from the road.
    Pitch was relatively flat.

    Disliked:

Arrived at the time we had stated, there was no one to tell us where our pitch was. Rang Michelle to ask her what to do. She left a message the following morning so we just picked a pitch. There was 3 toilets, one had a sink. Two sinks where outside. All 3 toilets were awful. We assumed there was showers, there was none.

Location was great and the pitch sizes were good! Really nice site for back to basics camping and the new shower block looks great.

    Disliked:

Some of the pitches had a slight slope but very minor and nothing can be done about that.

    The peacefulness and spacious pitches.

    Disliked:

The facilities were very basic and I’m glad I only stayed for one night and could give the shower a miss. There was also a large wasp nest which meant that there were lots of wasps around the tent and my daughter did get stung.

Tatty and unloved. Clutter in communal areas21/08/2023

Lots of space. Good views very close by.

    Disliked:

Toilets and showers were not ok. One toilet didn't have a toilet seat ( older bank of toilets). Only dad had a shower (with his flip flops on). Most things were generally tatty. They were painting the new shower block while we were there so might be better in future. But just cleaning the toilets and showers wouldn't go a miss- the floors and walls looked like they had not been cleaned since 2020. Maybe get a skip and chuck the old BBQ area sign, general mess and clutter on the communal areas, do some weeding of flower beds and it would be miles better.

Has potential to be a good site, but needs the basics of cleanliness02/08/2022

  • Non-electric grass pitch

  • Liked:

Large open space for children to play
Children loved the artillery cannon in the wooded area
Most pitches have access to electricity. This is metered and requires £1 or £2 coins.
    Washing machine

    Disliked:

Toilets/showers not cleaned during the three days we were there.
There is no drain in the male shower cubicle, waste water drains to a central drain in the middle of the main room.
The toilet block closest to the camp area is not completed, there are building materials lying around, which are a danger to children.
A lot of wasps, but gave an opportunity for a wasp catching competition.
Markets itself on being "back to basics" but this should not mean that basics such as daily cleaning of the facilities should be overlooked.
    Not a country park!

Countryside views, we also saw Red Kites. Open space for playing, the children enjoyed the Woodland area.

    Disliked:

All bins including recycling overflowing with mixed waste. It wasn't emptied during our 2 night stay. Unfinished facilities and building materials left around didn't feel safe with young children around. The toilets/sinks/showers were not cleaned during our stay. Sinks are outside under a small roof.
It is a quiet site, apart from the 60mph country road adjacent. That is noisy, even in the night.
It is a campsite, not a country park. It is expensive for the current facilities.

Local attractions

Guests at Edgehill Country Park have loads of history to explore in the local area. Within 15 minutes' drive you could be in the lovely town of Stratford-upon-Avon, most famed as the birthplace of Shakespeare, but also home to Anne Hathaway’s Cottage and several theatres and music venues.

The castles of Warwick and Kenilworth are also both within easy reach, and over in Royal Leamington Spa, Jephson Gardens – home to a tearoom, a sensory garden and a botanical garden – is a splendid spot to tour on a sunny day, with the Royal Pump Rooms museum across the road being a pleasant place to wander around for an hour or so.

Around here is also land where the British motor industry began (and continues today) – the British Motor Museum is seven miles away in Gaydon, while over in Coventry there's the Coventry Transport Museum, both showcasing the finest vehicular specimens of Britain's motoring history; well worth the visit if you're an ardent appreciator of a good chassis.

For animal-based days, take the kids to see the 500-plus birds at Birdland Park and Gardens, or the peacocks and deer at Prinknash Bird Park. The world's biggest flocks of swans, ducks and geese can be witnessed over at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust reserve at Slimbridge, which also hosts events, talks and wildlife encounters throughout the year.
