Heaps of space to run around

General

  • Countryside setting in the Cotswolds
  • Easy access to Stratford, Leamington Spa, Oxford and Banbury
  • Back to nature site with plenty of room and surrounded by woodland

For a wild countryside setting in the middle of Shakespeare country... escape to Edgehill Country Park, a basic site set up for guests to stay in a natural setting and wildlife haven. It's near the Edge Hill escarpment, where the first major battle of the English Civil War took place, right on the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and surrounded by miles of Warwickshire countryside.

Among open fields and next to a mature woodland, plenty of wildlife spotting is around this relaxed back to nature site, which has loads of room for kids (and grownups) to wear themselves out. The site has been kept deliberately basic to be as natural as possible, but has an amenities block with toilets, one shower and a washing-up area.

Your helpful and friendly hosts allow you to choose your own pitch when you arrive at base, and you can kick back and relax in the knowledge that you won't be expected to rush off on your last morning either.

Handily, four local pubs that serve food are within easy walking distance – two via roads and two across fields. There's also a small village five minutes' drive away for shops, a butcher, more pubs and a takeaway.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

This is a back to nature site with no lights and no electricity. Guests walk in water and sometimes mud into toilet block. The toilet lights are on timed sensors from solar gain.

The site is simple and clean with flat pitches and large enough to comfortably allow ample space between groups. I would highly recommend the Rose and Crown in Ratley which is a 5 minute drive. The food was delicious and good family atmosphere. Best to book in advance.

    Disliked:

As novice campers we didn’t prepare well enough for the flies, we may have been unlucky with pitch choice but there were a lot. The site says you can easily walk to a couple of local pubs and fish and chips but the site is off a road with no footpath. It does say you can cut through a field but in reality there is no way to safely walk down the road especially if you have children.

Facilities. Ladies 2 toilets one shower male one of each. Not clean (mud, grass, dirty water especially on floors - need to wear flip flops/ shores) due to volume of people traipsing through.
It is close to road so expect some road noise.

Local attractions

Guests to Edgehill Country Park have loads of history to explore in the local area. Within 15 minutes' drive you could be in the lovely town of Stratford-upon-Avon, most famed as the birthplace of Shakespeare, but also home to Anne Hathaway’s Cottage and several theatres and music venues.

The castles of Warwick and Kenilworth are also both within easy reach, and over in Royal Leamington Spa, Jephson Gardens – home to a tearoom, a sensory garden and a botanical garden – is a splendid spot to tour on a sunny day, with the Royal Pump Rooms museum across the road being a pleasant place to wander around for an hour or so.

Around here is also land where the British motor industry began (and continues today) – the British Motor Museum is seven miles away in Gaydon, while over in Coventry there's the Coventry Transport Museum, both showcasing the finest vehicular specimens of Britain's motoring history; well worth the visit if you're an ardent appreciator of a good chassis.

For animal-based days, take the kids to see the 500-plus birds at Birdland Park and Gardens, or the peacocks and deer at Prinknash Bird Park. The the world's biggest flocks of swans, ducks and geese can be witnessed over at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust reserve at Slimbridge, which also hosts events, talks and wildlife encounters throughout the year.
