General

  • Small pod park with private jetty and free use of private rowing boat
  • Wild swimming in Shropshire
  • Café on site serving homemade food from fresh local produce

Have a simple stay under the Shropshire stars and plunge into wild swimming at lovely Alderford Lake, a small pod park near Whitchurch in Shropshire.

On top of swimming in highly scenic lake surroundings, guests at Alderford can conk out afterwards in the park's camping pod, in its own exclusive setting by the lakeside and with private use of a rowing boat during your stay. Yes, your very own boat for your very own use during your stay, from your very own private jetty – now that's how to make a holiday go swimmingly…

The lake and grounds are used throughout the year by open-air swimmers, runners and dog walkers, many of whom stop off for a nourishing bite in the site's lakeside café which serves breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas seven days a week, all homemade using the freshest local ingredients from Shropshire, Cheshire and Wales. (Café + lakeside pod + private boat = making pals v jealous.)

A lakeside walk and a play area is on site too to keep everyone busy after their refreshing dip, and the wild swimming is available all year round (subject to a small daily fee). Regular events run on site too: ask when you arrive to see what's on during your stay.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

This site has no on-site toilet and shower facilities.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Pod arrivals from 12pm to 3.30pm and check-out before 10.30am.

The café has toilets and a shower available for guests use. These are however only available during opening hours from 9am to 4pm.

Swimming in the lake is available from April to the end of October and is subject to extra charges (£5 per person per session per day).

The pod is cosy and clean. the private jetty and boat was great- the scenery was lovely! The on-site cafe is nice and has lots of crafts and bits to buy. During the day it’s quite busy (can only speak for warm weekends) lots of people come to the cafe and/or go for a swim/go out on a canoe. It’s a nice walk around the lake and it is the only pod available so you feel quite secluded in the evening.

    Disliked:

The camping toilet in the pod smelt bad and wasn’t as clean on the outside as it could be! The cafe has a shower in the disabled toilet but there was no blocks of shared showers/toilets open at night. When the cafe shut at 5 that was it. We wasn’t given much info about the shower or toilet situation we had to ask ourselves. We kind of expected a little more detail as we arrived but there was a guide book in the pod with some info on!

Setting. Activities, cafe, went canoeing and rented canoes from a lovely couple.

    Disliked:

Noise from busy road although we knew it would be.
Isn’t know there would be a 6am alarm call from industrial generator and hot air balloon- seemingly a regular occurrence at weekend but had no warning.

Brilliant swimming in the lake, campsite was nearly empty on ... 26/09/2018

Brilliant swimming in the lake, campsite was nearly empty on most of my days there.

Facilities only during the day but that's all you need. Water available 24/7.

When all the visitors have left, the lake is flooded with wildlife!

The daytime toilets and wetroom are well looked after. Would definitely recommend for a day trip for the lake even if you don't stay the night, the cafe is lovely.

    Disliked:

Road noise is noticeable, but not distracting.

Some drunk teenagers noticed the mostly empty site and drove in to party in the middle of the night, but didn't cause any trouble.

Nice place. Lots of space so we could pitch up wherever we liked.

    Disliked:

No facilities out of business hours! There's no toilet block, only the toilets in the cafe, which is only open 9-5. No shower either, we only had access to a hosepipe which was a long walk from the pitch.

Local attractions

Your pod at Alderford Lake is easily accessible to piles of Shropshire, Cheshire and north Wales countryside and attractions including gardens and canals, meres and mosses, and city days out in celebrated Chester and Shrewsbury.

Whitchurch, an easy mile away, is the starting point for miles (and miles) of long-distance walking trails (the town was founded by a Mr Julius Caesar and once lay on the main Roman road between Chester and Wroxeter).

Five trails start from Whitchurch's Jubilee Park, including the 34 miles of the Sandstone Trail starting and ending in Whitchurch, and the Shropshire Way which crosses the England/Wales border (several shorter trails run around the town too).

Northern Shropshire is canal land: cruise along the Shropshire Union Canal on to Market Drayton, or stay close to home to drift on the Llangollen Canal around Whitchurch and on to the market town of Ellesmere. The Meres and Mosses peat bog landscape filled with rare wildlife is in the region too for nature spotting and more hiking.

Also have a wander around Hawkstone Park, a 400-acre site famed mainly for its follies of caves, cliffs and medieval castle ruins, and Cholmondeley Castle Gardens over the border in Cheshire with its 50 acres of ornamental gardens, aviary, deer park mere, and African pygmy goats, llamas and alpacas.

Must see

  • Cheshire Military Museum (18.4 miles)
  • Chester Castle (18.5 miles)
  • Chester Cathedral (18.8 miles)

  • Chirk Castle (17.2 miles)
  • Attingham Park (18.5 miles)
