General

  • Exclusive pod with private jetty and free use of private rowing boat
  • Wild camping (no facilities) and wild swimming in Shropshire
  • Café on site serving homemade food from fresh local produce

Have a simple stay under the Shropshire stars and plunge into spring and summer wild swimming at lovely Alderford Lake, a small wild camping and pod park near Whitchurch in Shropshire.

On top of swimming in highly scenic lake surroundings, guests at Alderford can conk out afterwards in the park's camping pod, in its own exclusive setting by the lakeside and with private use of a rowing boat during your stay. Yes, your very own boat for your very own use during your stay, from your very own private jetty – now that's how to make a holiday go swimmingly…

The lake and grounds are used throughout the year by open-air swimmers, runners and dog walkers, many of whom stop off for a nourishing bite in the site's lakeside café which serves breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas seven days a week, all homemade using the freshest local ingredients from Shropshire, Cheshire and Wales. (Café + lakeside pod + private boat = making v jealous.)

Alderford Lake has non-electric grass pitches for campers and caravanners in its wildflower meadow adjacent to the lake: this is a grass field without facilities, but guests can use the toilets and a shower a couple of minutes' walk away in the café during its opening hours of 9am to 5pm.

A lakeside walk and a play area is on site too to keep everyone busy after their refreshing dip, and the wild swimming is available from the start of April until the end of October (subject to a small daily fee). Regular events run on site too: ask when you arrive to see what's on during your stay.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

This site has no on-site toilet and shower facilities.

Camping arrivals from 11.30am to 3.30pm. Pod arrivals from 12pm to 3.30pm and check-out before 10.30am. Reception is unmanned after 4pm. Please call the site/park using the contact details provided in the booking confirmation email if you are running late. The team will then provide you with the relevant information about your unit/pitch.

The café has toilets and a shower available for guests use. These are however only available during opening hours from 9am to 4pm.

Swimming in the lake is available from April to the end of October and is subject to extra charges (£5 per person per session per day).

Camped night before triathlon, because of this event there were portable toilets there. Great spot for camping close to lake , cafe and town of Whitchurch

    Disliked:

Shame no purpose built toilet block or some sort of keycode access to toilet in cafe, kids were bit disappointed at not being able to wee in the hedge 😊. Little bit expensive for pitch, considering its wild camping

As we were booked in for the Ultimate Triathlon, this review is only given from that point of view.
I liked the campsite and facilities available.
I would like to return on another occasion when there wasn't an event taking place, to sample the peace & quiet.

Nice lake great for swimming in with nice and tidy area around the lake.
I stayed for two nights to take part in the triathlon.

    Disliked:

The only problem was that the cafe closes at four which means no showers available or toilets. Due to he race at least two porto loos were located in the camping area.

Loved the setting, the staff in the cafe ( which was very busy) were really friendly and helpful.
The lake is perfect for swimming in and it's a lovely walk around the outside of the lake.
We were lucky as there was an event on and there were portaloos available for use.
So be aware this isn't always the case!
We only stayed one night but would definitely recommend it.

    Disliked:

Local attractions

Your pod or pitch at Alderford Lake is easily accessible to piles of Shropshire, Cheshire and north Wales countryside and attractions including gardens and canals, meres and mosses, and city days out in celebrated Chester and Shrewsbury.

Whitchurch, an easy mile away, is the starting point for miles (and miles) of long-distance walking trails (the town was founded by a Mr Julius Caesar and once lay on the main Roman road between Chester and Wroxeter).

Five trails start from Whitchurch's Jubilee Park, including the 34 miles of the Sandstone Trail starting and ending in Whitchurch, and the Shropshire Way which crosses the England/Wales border (several shorter trails run around the town too).

Northern Shropshire is canal land: cruise along the Shropshire Union Canal on to Market Drayton, or stay close to home to drift on the Llangollen Canal around Whitchurch and on to the market town of Ellesmere. The Meres and Mosses peat bog landscape filled with rare wildlife is in the region too for nature spotting and more hiking.

Also have a wander around Hawkstone Park, a 400-acre site famed mainly for its follies of caves, cliffs and medieval castle ruins, and Cholmondeley Castle Gardens over the border in Cheshire with its 50 acres of ornamental gardens, aviary, deer park mere, and African pygmy goats, llamas and alpacas.
