General

  • Exclusive pod with private jetty and free use of private rowing boat
  • Wild camping (no facilities) and wild swimming in Shropshire
  • Café on site serving homemade food from fresh local produce

Have a simple stay under the Shropshire stars and plunge into spring and summer wild swimming at lovely Alderford Lake, a small wild camping and pod park near Whitchurch in Shropshire.

On top of swimming in highly scenic lake surroundings, guests at Alderford can conk out afterwards in the park's camping pod, in its own exclusive setting by the lakeside and with private use of a rowing boat during your stay. Yes, your very own boat for your very own use during your stay, from your very own private jetty – now that's how to make a holiday go swimmingly…

The lake and grounds are used throughout the year by open-air swimmers, runners and dog walkers, many of whom stop off for a nourishing bite in the site's lakeside café which serves breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas seven days a week, all homemade using the freshest local ingredients from Shropshire, Cheshire and Wales. (Café + lakeside pod + private boat = making v jealous.)

Alderford Lake has non-electric grass pitches for campers and caravanners in its wildflower meadow adjacent to the lake: this is a grass field without facilities, but guests can use the toilets and a shower a couple of minutes' walk away in the café during its opening hours of 9am to 5pm.

A lakeside walk and a play area is on site too to keep everyone busy after their refreshing dip, and the wild swimming is available from the start of April until the end of October (subject to a small daily fee). Regular events run on site too: ask when you arrive to see what's on during your stay.

Please note

This site has no on-site toilet and shower facilities.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Camping arrivals from 11.30am to 3.30pm. Pod arrivals from 12pm to 3.30pm and check-out before 10.30am. Reception is unmanned after 4pm. Please call the site/park using the contact details provided in the booking confirmation email if you are running late. The team will then provide you with the relevant information about your unit/pitch.

The café has toilets and a shower available for guests use. These are however only available during opening hours from 9am to 4pm.

Swimming in the lake is available from April to the end of October and is subject to extra charges (£5 per person per session per day).

    friendly accommodating staff.
    lake wild swimming.
plenty of room for tents (there was only 1 other tent aside from ours).
    great breakfast in the cafe.
liked it so much we've booked to stay in the pod during the winter.
The lack of toilets didn't bother me as much as I thought it would, the cafe was open early enough for the morning so it was just evening to worry about. if you were staying longer than 1 or 2 nights then I would have to consider other options.
night time walking down to the lake it felt really remote even though you were close to a main road and a short drive to places like Starbucks. It was nice to have that feeling but the security of not actually being remote.
Wild swim included in our pitch fee so really good value for money overall.

    Disliked:

not really a dislike as such but other people have mentioned that maybe a bin would have been helpful.
you could hear cars from the nearby road but it was quieter at night so it didn't bother me at all.

Loved the open field and the fact that we were 2 mins walk from the lake. The lake it's self was great fun and my 8 year old daughter and I spent a fun day cycling round and round it having and occasional swim. The wild swimming was a real highlight.
The cafe was also nice with helpful staff.
Of course, the good weather helped!

    Disliked:

Nothing really to dislike but a dedicated toilet block and showers would be a good addition.

Nice quiet site close to the event which we had stayed over for. Lots of space and we could park wherever we liked. Lovely friendly staff from the cafe catering at the event itself which was fantastic.

    Disliked:

Quite pricey considering there were no camping facilities at all (although toilets were available in the cafe which had limited opening hours and I didn't see showers). No-one actually came to check that we had paid or booked in either so we felt like we needn't have bothered! Fees really need looking at as just under £10 per person per night is a lot, I only pay £5-10 for my van and all occupants usually for similar facilities.

We were surprised when we arrived as during booking, the pitch up website kept saying that there were next to no spaces left but when we arrived there was noone else at all in a football pitch sized field! Very misleading.

It's a beautiful setting and exceptionally easy to get to. We went to both of the outdoor film screenings, both of which we all enjoyed immensely

    Disliked:

I know this has already been suggested, and I know it is stated on Alderford lake website that there are very few facilities after the cafe closes at 4, but the addition of even a very basic bathroom facility accessible through the evening would make a huge difference. Unfortunately I cannot recommend the campsite to friends as the majority do not have portaloos or similar.

Decent, level ground for pitching. Nice environment with a clean lake and a decent cafe on site.

    Disliked:

There was a festival on the day i was camping there. They took over the whole site, which made it hard to find a decent pitch and even harder to get a decent night's sleep. I shouldn't have been able to book a pitch for that day.

Also the showers were broken the whole time i was there so had to have a wash in the cafe's lavatories once it was open.

Local attractions

Your pod or pitch at Alderford Lake is easily accessible to piles of Shropshire, Cheshire and north Wales countryside and attractions including gardens and canals, meres and mosses, and city days out in celebrated Chester and Shrewsbury.

Whitchurch, an easy mile away, is the starting point for miles (and miles) of long-distance walking trails (the town was founded by a Mr Julius Caesar and once lay on the main Roman road between Chester and Wroxeter).

Five trails start from Whitchurch's Jubilee Park, including the 34 miles of the Sandstone Trail starting and ending in Whitchurch, and the Shropshire Way which crosses the England/Wales border (several shorter trails run around the town too).

Northern Shropshire is canal land: cruise along the Shropshire Union Canal on to Market Drayton, or stay close to home to drift on the Llangollen Canal around Whitchurch and on to the market town of Ellesmere. The Meres and Mosses peat bog landscape filled with rare wildlife is in the region too for nature spotting and more hiking.

Also have a wander around Hawkstone Park, a 400-acre site famed mainly for its follies of caves, cliffs and medieval castle ruins, and Cholmondeley Castle Gardens over the border in Cheshire with its 50 acres of ornamental gardens, aviary, deer park mere, and African pygmy goats, llamas and alpacas.
