  • Small pod park near Whitchurch with private lake jetty
  • Wild swimming in Shropshire
  • Café on site serving homemade food from fresh local produce
Have a simple stay under the Shropshire stars and plunge into wild swimming at lovely Alderford Lake, a small pod park near Whitchurch. On top of swimming in highly scenic lake surroundings, guests at Alderford can conk out afterwards in the park's camping pod, in its own exclusive setting by the lakeside with your very own private jetty – now that's how to make a holiday go swimmingly… The lake and grounds are used throughout the year by open-air swimmers, runners and dog walkers, many of whom stop off for a nourishing bite in the site's lakeside café which serves breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas seven days a week, all homemade using the freshest local ingredients from Shropshire, Cheshire and Wales. (Café + lakeside pod + daily wild swims = making pals v jealous.) A lakeside walk and a play area is on site too to keep everyone busy after their refreshing dip, and the wild swimming is available all year round (subject to a small daily fee). Regular events run on site too: ask when you arrive to see what's on during your stay.

Local attractions

Your pod at Alderford Lake is easily accessible to piles of Shropshire, Cheshire and north Wales countryside and attractions including gardens and canals, meres and mosses, and city days out in celebrated Chester and Shrewsbury. Whitchurch, an easy mile away, is the starting point for miles (and miles) of long-distance walking trails (the town was founded by a Mr Julius Caesar and once lay on the main Roman road between Chester and Wroxeter). Five trails start from Whitchurch's Jubilee Park, including the 34 miles of the Sandstone Trail starting and ending in Whitchurch, and the Shropshire Way which crosses the England/Wales border (several shorter trails run around the town too). Northern Shropshire is canal land: cruise along the Shropshire Union Canal on to Market Drayton, or stay close to home to drift on the Llangollen Canal around Whitchurch and on to the market town of Ellesmere. The Meres and Mosses peat bog landscape filled with rare wildlife is in the region too for nature spotting and more hiking. Also have a wander around Hawkstone Park, a 400-acre site famed mainly for its follies of caves, cliffs and medieval castle ruins, and Cholmondeley Castle Gardens over the border in Cheshire with its 50 acres of ornamental gardens, aviary, deer park mere, and African pygmy goats, llamas and alpacas.
