Great Family Holidays Since 1974: the Shingler family welcomes you to Lower Lacon Caravan Park
Play area by orange area and top field
Children can play for hours and make lots of new friends
Play park by one of the camping fields

  • Family site one mile from the market town of Wem
  • Within 25 minutes' drive of Shrewsbury, Ellesmere and Whitchurch
  • Two play areas, crazy golf and a supermarket with off-licence on site
Opened by the Shingler family in 1974, Lower Lacon Caravan Park is just a mile from the stunning market town of Wem in north Shropshire. With train and bus services in Wem being within walking distance, the site has easy access to plenty of local attractions, including Shrewsbury, Ellesmere and Whitchurch (which are all within 25 minutes' drive of the site if you'd rather take your own transport). The site has a very convenient and secure set-up, with a barrier system, 24-hour emergency cover and a warden and owners living on site. There are two play areas on site, as well as crazy golf and a heated outdoor swimming pool with a toddler's paddling pool (please take note that the pools are only open during high season for pre-booked sessions only, and weather dependent). For extra entertainment, the J.A.K.K.S. Barn (open on weekends during low season and closed during winter) has a bar and occasional family discos. When you're hungry, pick up snacks at the on-site supermarket, which also has an off-licence. The J.A.K.K.S. café and takeaway (open on weekends during low season and closed during winter) are on hand for further refreshments. By the pool, there's the choice of CJ's Snack Bar (weather dependent) and the adults-only Windmill Lounge Bar (only open during high season or on weekends during low season and winter), which has a marquee. Lower Lacon Caravan Park has a pretty cool backstory, having started as the back entrance for the Aston Park American Army Camp, a munitions and distribution depot built in World War II (on land purchased from owner Clive's paternal grandfather). During its development, a D8 bulldozer sank in the soil, so the land was covered with three feet of solid materials from local foundries; this can make placing pegs difficult but it also means that the team have never had to turn away any customers due to bad weather as the pitches stay firm.

What customers say

This is a large, well-run campsite ideal for families, with plenty of activities and amenities including a swimming pool, play areas, and on-site entertainment. Pitches are generally spacious and well-maintained, and staff are frequently praised for their friendliness and helpfulness. While many guests appreciate the cleanliness of facilities, some found them dated or experienced issues with noise, particularly during peak times. The site's dog-friendly policy received mixed reviews.

Electric grass pitch (large)

Liked lots of things for kids to do

Disliked was barely grass, there was rock under ground so pegs were bending and was just dust and dead grass on top. pitches very close together. our pitch was incredibly uneven with lots of large holes in. lots of unsupervised children all over the site so lots of problems with bullying/poor behaviour and fires in bins.

Non-electric grass pitch (no pets, small)

Liked Great to come back with grandchildren after 30 years! Staff were very friendly and helpful especially the manager of JAKKS and the swimming pool. Good communication and organisation and very family friendly. We enjoyed being on the TOP field out of the way and using our bikes to get around. Kids loved the facilities

Disliked It was very very busy and the fields were all occupied as it was good weather in August! The toilets and showers at the top field were just like festival toilets and struggled to cope with the amount of campers. Some people were up until early hours making noise. Perhaps more showers and toilets needed and investments in the cleanliness. Lots of litter - I picked from our field. The 4pm pool slot was too busy but we had it to ourselves at 10am! Could be cleaner but heavily populated.

Electric grass pitch (large)

Liked The pool, park and roilet facilities on site, the wardens were always polite and helpful, and it was lovely to have the few animals on site also.

Disliked The ground under the grass was extremely hard, was told to use rock pegs, which we did and they bent, and we struggled to pitch up when we arrived. We had a rain storm which caused the rain to pool in our tent porch because the ground was uneven and it couldn't soak into the ground, we have medical equipment with us so we cannot have water in the tent, other unused pitches didnt have the pools of water resting on the ground. The showers have no where to put dry clothes, everything gets soaked, and the male showers were often cold. The tumble dryer is a pound for 10 minutes which I think is a little expensive, was told to leave closed until clothes were dry, but after 10 mins there was no heat although it continued to tumble at a very slow rate.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel pitch (super)

Liked Really great service from staff and the site is well patrolled / kept clean etc. Good parks for the kids as there are two on each end.

Disliked Very large site and there is a lot of permanent residents that make lots of areas shanty town looking and derelict. The site seems to be a bit mish mash in terms of its set up and what it’s aiming for. Lots of E Bikes zooming around too…We personally wouldn’t stay again and have two young kids.

Electric grass pitch (XL)

Liked The campsite was close to lots of different places to visit….Wem, Shrewsbury, Chester, Nantwich etc
We liked where our pitch was ( next to a hedge ) so had more privacy and it was a good size too.
The campsite also had a nice well stocked shop near the entrance also the security barrier gave you peace of mind.
There was also a nice takeaway place on site too selling burgers, breakfasts, fish & chips…..very good 👍🏻

Disliked The campsite seemed very tired in some places the amount of seasonal pitches was crazy , and some looked really shabby. Not a nice sight to see on arrival.
The toilet/shower blocks were functional but could definitely do with a bit of TLC

Electric grass pitch (large, no pets)

Liked Nothing

Disliked Absolutely shocking experience I was not allowed on the site, I have a van for motocross only not work related use at all they wouldn’t let me on the site unless i kept my van in a lock up with no access for the weekend the manager said I should get a refund, absolutely never choose this site again & other van where going in & out why we was waiting for staff to sort us -5 out of 5

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Martin

As I said at the time the other vans had told us about the van and use the van storage during their stay.
In the PitchUp rules it says,
Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

I also double checked and you sent multiple emails that said about vans

Wed 30/07/2025 22:11, PitchUp Booking at Lower Lacon Caravan Park
Wed 06/08/2025 08:32, Lower Lacon Arrival Information
Fri 08/08/2025 08:29, Check in times and Directions to Lower Lacon Caravan Park for camping

All containing the wording

And can we remind you that Commercial vehicles are not allowed onto the caravan park, this includes vans and sign written cars. If you're unsure, please visit the website. https://www.llcp.co.uk/vehicle.cfm

So although PitchUp may not be so black and white to you. I think in our own email information with you we did say vans are not permitted. So we tried our very best to keep you informed, thank you for making it obvious that vans are not allowed with this review.

Kind regards
Robert
