Opened by the Shingler family in 1974, Lower Lacon Caravan Park is just a mile from the stunning market town of Wem in north Shropshire. With train and bus services in Wem being within walking distance, the site has easy access to plenty of local attractions, including Shrewsbury, Ellesmere and Whitchurch (which are all within 25 minutes' drive of the site if you'd rather take your own transport). The site has a very convenient and secure set-up, with a barrier system, 24-hour emergency cover and a warden and owners living on site. There are two play areas on site, as well as crazy golf and a heated outdoor swimming pool with a toddler's paddling pool (please take note that the pools are only open during high season for pre-booked sessions only, and weather dependent). For extra entertainment, the J.A.K.K.S. Barn (open on weekends during low season and closed during winter) has a bar and occasional family discos. When you're hungry, pick up snacks at the on-site supermarket, which also has an off-licence. The J.A.K.K.S. café and takeaway (open on weekends during low season and closed during winter) are on hand for further refreshments. By the pool, there's the choice of CJ's Snack Bar (weather dependent) and the adults-only Windmill Lounge Bar (only open during high season or on weekends during low season and winter), which has a marquee. Lower Lacon Caravan Park has a pretty cool backstory, having started as the back entrance for the Aston Park American Army Camp, a munitions and distribution depot built in World War II (on land purchased from owner Clive's paternal grandfather). During its development, a D8 bulldozer sank in the soil, so the land was covered with three feet of solid materials from local foundries; this can make placing pegs difficult but it also means that the team have never had to turn away any customers due to bad weather as the pitches stay firm.

喜欢 We had a lovely stay at the caravan site and would definitely come back. The site was very well maintained—everything was clean, tidy, and clearly well looked after. My daughter especially loved the play area, which kept her happily entertained while we relaxed. It had a really friendly atmosphere, and we felt welcome from the moment we arrived. A great place for a peaceful break with the family!

喜欢 We had a fantastic weekend! The Green pitches were perfect for our first family camping trip — spacious and close to the facilities, which were clean and easy to access. We really enjoyed the family-friendly disco on Friday night, and the selection of ciders was great — especially the piña colada flavor! The pool was a hit with the kids, and although it didn’t feel heated, it was ideal for cooling off on a hot day. The onsite shop had a good range of food and drinks, and all the staff were super friendly and approachable. The campsite itself was quiet and peaceful, and the other campers were lovely.

不喜欢 Not much to complain about at all! The only minor thing was that the pool didn’t feel heated as advertised — but since the weather was warm, it actually worked out well for cooling down.

喜欢 Yes we liked the site, the pitches were huge, plenty of space to run about on pitch and off pitch. Good park for our children and ideally located to walk in to seem
For a drink and Sunday carvery.) The porta-showers were better than the main shower block. Outdoor pool was freezing but to be expected as it wasn’t a particularly warm day, but good fun and would be great in warmer weather, easy to book and provided with own bench / table. Site is old fashioned / dated but overall we enjoyed it and would go back. Thank you

不喜欢 Camping toilets were disgusting so walked to the others which were just as bad.

Food very basic.

Group of adults acting like drunk teenagers until 2am on our last night spoilt it. Told to contact security and there was no answer.

The site is also within striking distance of Ironbridge Gorge (45 minutes), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adore exploring the history of a place? Take yourself to spots like the British Ironwork Centre (35 minutes), Blists Hill Victorian Town (40 minutes) and Royal Air Force Museum Midlands (40 minutes), or pretend like you've gone back in time at Attingham Park (25 minutes), a National Trust site. The Quarry (half an hour) is a gorgeous spot for a little stroll in Shrewsbury, and if you fancy something a bit more challenging, Hawkstone Park Follies (five minutes) has sandstone hills and caves. If you're looking for activities that'll entertain the kids, however, make a beeline for Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World (35 minutes). The site is near plenty of historic Shropshire towns and villages, from Hodnet (10 minutes) and Ellesmere (20 minutes) to Market Drayton (20 minutes) and Oswestry (40 minutes).
