General

  • Small, friendly and peaceful site with a dedicated adults-only area
  • Less than ten minutes from Shrewsbury
  • Shop selling bacon, sausages, eggs and homegrown and local produce

Heritage hunters, serenity seekers, hikers, wildlife watchers and fans of all things Roman (and wine) … cart yourself off to this small, peaceful and secluded Shropshire site for all the above and a fair bit more, at a friendly rural base less than ten minutes from the medieval market town and 600+ listed buildings of Shrewsbury.

As well as its locale five miles from the Shropshire capital, Cartref Camping and Caravan Site is also a few minutes' drive from the famed industrial setting and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ironbridge, and a short drive from Wroxeter Roman City and its adjoining Roman vineyard.

It's in the Shropshire Hills with several walks and bike rides easily reached, such as Offa's Dyke Path passing between Shrewsbury and nearby Welshpool; the Marches Way, also passing Shrewsbury on its way from Cheddar to Chepstow, and lake-based wanders around the glacial waters of Ellesmere.

The amiable Cartref owners have named the site after the Welsh word for 'home', as the mission on site is for all ages to feel relaxed and comfy, whether they're Crusoe-style campers or out on their first trepid trip with a new tent or caravan. Within the site's five-acre field is a dedicated area for adults only, a dog walk and a small play park including football nets where kids can also ride their bikes. There's also a small bar selling local ales, Shropshire lager and Shropshire gin along with wines and spirits.

The immaculate amenities include a toilet and shower block with access for disabled guests, baby changing facilities, a washing-up area and a laundry.

Cartfef also has a shop, selling local fresh produce including bacon and sausages, eggs from the resident hens, and various homegrown and local produce.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

The owners are so lovely. Always available and willing if you have any problems or questions or just a chat!
My adult son and I stayed for a week to try out our new tent. We were impressed by the tidy well kept site. Toilets/showers/wash-up/waste-water facilities are brilliant.
What we were most impressed with was the quirky 'shed' bar. Complete with wood burning stove and equally warm hosts, we spent many a happy evening in there.
    We would definitely stay again!

Beautifully presented campsite with friendly staff. The toilet and shower block were immaculate as were the grounds. Yeah gentleman even helped me carry my coffees from the shop to my camper! They have a cool little bar on site which is open til 10pm too. We didn't get to use it as we were there to attend a wedding party but would definitely like to go back and sample all facilities.

    Disliked:

Not so much a dislike but the site is a little way out from the town centre. We had a camper and no car once set up but there is a local taxi service - comet cars who took us to Shrewsbury for £6.70 no problem.

What a lovely quiet site, we stayed in the adult only fully serviced caravan pitch, the owners were very helpful, friendly & knowledgeable we were shown to our pitch & helped set up, we were really impressed as very clean & tidy the site is well cared for they have good size level gravelled pitches with grass, the toilets & showers on the site are lovely, modern & clean, the adult only section had a lovely pond with a beautiful fountain in the middle with huge koi carp which was all lit up in the evening, enjoyed the dog walk as we had two labradors would have been even better if they had an enclosed dog run as well as our dogs love to have their ball thrown and a bit of run around. One camper was annoying letting her dog bark constantly for ages while they were chatting with another couple.
Lovely shop serving the essentials and a cafe & pub in the evening all in all a lovely quite week we had, definitely will be back

Local attractions

Shropshire's capital of splendid Shrewsbury is around five miles from Cartref Camping and Caravan Site. The piles of old buildings to see will keep anyone occupied for quite some time, but ask around when you're there to see if any of the famed festivals are running during your stay: the Shrewsbury Flower Show, Folk Festival and the Shrewsbury International Cartoon Festival and more have their HQs here.

Roam a little further to Wroxeter Roman City five miles south-east of Shrewsbury: once one of the biggest cities of Roman Britain, it's managed these days by English Heritage, which runs regular events, an audio tour and a museum around its bathhouse remains, townhouse re-creation and the biggest free-standing Roman wall in the country in the Old Work. Guided tours, afternoon teas and wines are available at Wroxeter Roman Vineyard.

The Industrial Revolution site of Ironbridge a few minutes' drive away is another top Shropshire family attraction, or take the kids for some fine dining or yet more afternoon teas at the foodie town of Ludlow. Ellesmere, with its glacial meres created from the last ice age, also has a bowling green at the ruins of its eleventh-century motte and bailey castle.
