  • Small and friendly adults-only site 10 minutes' drive from Shrewsbury
  • A 15-minute drive to Wroxeter Roman City; Ironbridge half an hour
  • Five-acre site with a bar and shop; shared kitchen; dedicated dog walk
Heritage hunters, serenity seekers, walkers, wildlife watchers and fans of all things Roman (and wine) … cart yourself off to this small, peaceful and secluded Shropshire site for all the above and a fair bit more, at a friendly rural base less than ten minutes' drive from the medieval market town and 600+ listed buildings of Shrewsbury. As well as its locale five miles from the Shropshire capital, Cartref Camping and Caravan Site is also half an hour's drive from the famed industrial setting and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ironbridge, and a short drive from Wroxeter Roman City and its adjoining Roman vineyard. It's set in the Shropshire Hills where several walks and bike rides are easily reached, such as Offa's Dyke Path passing between Shrewsbury and nearby Welshpool; the Marches Way, also passing Shrewsbury on its way from Cheddar to Chepstow, and lake-based wanders around the glacial waters of Ellesmere. The amiable Cartref owners have named the site after the Welsh word for 'home', as the mission on site is for everyone to feel relaxed and comfy, whether they're Crusoe-style campers or out on their first trip with a new tent or caravan. Pitches have a cosy, private feeling as they're marked out with hedgerows. Within the site's five-acre field is a dedicated dog walk, and there's also a small bar selling local ales, Wrexham lager and Shropshire gin along with wines and other spirits. The immaculate amenities include a toilet and shower block with access for disabled guests, a washing-up area and a laundry. Cartfef also has a shop and communal kitchen.

Liked: We liked everything about this site, the pitches are Huge with Hedges dividing them. The gardens around the site are beautiful and well cared for. The Cartref team were so helpful and friendly. The bar is a great place to meet new caravanning friends. We will definitely be going back to Cartref caravan site and I would recommend it to all our friends or anyone that wants to spend time at a 5 star plus site.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The touring site is very well laid out and maintained with neatly trimmed hedges between each level pitch. The staff were very helpful upon arrival as well as during our stay. There is a very friendly small bar area to meet and chat to other visitors over a drink. There is also a small coffee shop which also does snacks on some days. Being in the countryside just a few miles from Shrewsbury the site is lovely and quiet but only a short drive from Shrewsbury

Disliked: The only slight constructive criticism we would make is the shower/toilet block, whilst perfectly adequate, is a little dated and if modernised at some point would bring this up to the standard of the rest of the site

Local attractions

Shropshire's splendid capital of Shrewsbury is around five miles from Cartref Camping and Caravan Site. The piles of old buildings to see will keep anyone occupied for quite some time, but ask around when you're there to see if any of the famed festivals are running during your stay: the Shrewsbury Flower Show, Folk Festival and the Shrewsbury International Cartoon Festival and more have their HQs here. Roam a little further to Wroxeter Roman City, five miles south-east of Shrewsbury: once one of the biggest cities in Roman Britain, it's managed these days by English Heritage, which runs regular events, an audio tour and a museum around its bathhouse remains, townhouse re-creation and the biggest free-standing Roman wall in the country in the Old Work. Guided tours, afternoon teas and wines are available at Wroxeter Roman Vineyard. The Industrial Revolution site of Ironbridge half an hour's drive away is another top Shropshire attraction, or you could sample some fine dining or afternoon teas in the foodie town of Ludlow. Ellesmere, with its glacial meres created during the last Ice Age, also has a bowling green at the ruins of its 11th-century motte-and-bailey castle.
