  • Small and friendly adults-only site 10 minutes' drive from Shrewsbury
  • A 15-minute drive to Wroxeter Roman City; Ironbridge half an hour
  • Five-acre site with a bar and shop; shared kitchen; dedicated dog walk
Heritage hunters, serenity seekers, walkers, wildlife watchers and fans of all things Roman (and wine) … cart yourself off to this small, peaceful and secluded Shropshire site for all the above and a fair bit more, at a friendly rural base less than ten minutes' drive from the medieval market town and 600+ listed buildings of Shrewsbury. As well as its locale five miles from the Shropshire capital, Cartref Camping and Caravan Site is also half an hour's drive from the famed industrial setting and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ironbridge, and a short drive from Wroxeter Roman City and its adjoining Roman vineyard. It's set in the Shropshire Hills where several walks and bike rides are easily reached, such as Offa's Dyke Path passing between Shrewsbury and nearby Welshpool; the Marches Way, also passing Shrewsbury on its way from Cheddar to Chepstow, and lake-based wanders around the glacial waters of Ellesmere. The amiable Cartref owners have named the site after the Welsh word for 'home', as the mission on site is for everyone to feel relaxed and comfy, whether they're Crusoe-style campers or out on their first trip with a new tent or caravan. Pitches have a cosy, private feeling as they're marked out with hedgerows. Within the site's five-acre field is a dedicated dog walk, and there's also a small bar selling local ales, Wrexham lager and Shropshire gin along with wines and other spirits. The immaculate amenities include a toilet and shower block with access for disabled guests, a washing-up area and a laundry. Cartfef also has a shop and communal kitchen.

Liked Very friendly welcome. Very near private pitches. Lovely warm showers and clean facilities. Only stayed one night as passing through so didn’t eat or drink at the site but the bar did look inviting.

Fully-serviced concrete and grass caravan site

Liked All I can say is well done to the people in charge, fantastic site. If you are a dog person and you have been to a so called dog friendly sites before to find they are not so dog friendly you will be amazed at Cartref, dogs are welcome everywhere in both inside and outside areas. They can go everywhere you go.
This site has 5 star grounds, toilets, food bar, shop and even the dog have their own toilet. On top of this the staff are super friendly, especially Rachel who works on the bar. The bus stop is about half an hour walk, or about £12 by taxi into Shrewsbury. I will defiantly be going back

Fully-serviced concrete and grass caravan site

Liked The pitch was nice and big, plenty of room for awning and still an area for our dog to laze on grass.
Site was kept immaculate, even the dog walk areas were mowed and kept nice, loved the dog toilet.
Bar area is also lovely and welcoming, with variety of seating areas.
We had a meal from the hungry chef which was very tasty, plus cooked quickly, amazing given the size of kitchen.
Excellent TV signal, especially for the football fans.
Lots of farm noises, animals, machinery etc as you would expect in a very rural environment.

Disliked Helicopters flying overhead were a little annoying but great if you're an aircraft enthusiast.

Fully-serviced concrete and grass caravan site

Liked Beautiful clean, friendly site. I loved how each pitch has the individualised private feel to it.
The freedom field for dogs is amazing. The onsite bar and food amazing too.
The toilet/ showers, washing up facilities and the room to empty and wash the caravan toilet was fantastic 10/10 for all your amenities and bonus is you are only 75 min drive away from us, so we will 100% be back. All in all we had a fantastic time staying and we will definitely come back and recommend.
Oh and so close to loads of local points of interest we spent the day in Shrewsbury so much to see and do so you are an ideal spot to venture and see what Shropshire has to offer. ❤️

Disliked Our only dislike is we didn’t book longer, we didn’t want to leave.

Local attractions

Shropshire's splendid capital of Shrewsbury is around five miles from Cartref Camping and Caravan Site. The piles of old buildings to see will keep anyone occupied for quite some time, but ask around when you're there to see if any of the famed festivals are running during your stay: the Shrewsbury Flower Show, Folk Festival and the Shrewsbury International Cartoon Festival and more have their HQs here. Roam a little further to Wroxeter Roman City, five miles south-east of Shrewsbury: once one of the biggest cities in Roman Britain, it's managed these days by English Heritage, which runs regular events, an audio tour and a museum around its bathhouse remains, townhouse re-creation and the biggest free-standing Roman wall in the country in the Old Work. Guided tours, afternoon teas and wines are available at Wroxeter Roman Vineyard. The Industrial Revolution site of Ironbridge half an hour's drive away is another top Shropshire attraction, or you could sample some fine dining or afternoon teas in the foodie town of Ludlow. Ellesmere, with its glacial meres created during the last Ice Age, also has a bowling green at the ruins of its 11th-century motte-and-bailey castle.
