  • Lakeside park in a wildlife haven on five acres of grassland
  • Dog friendly with woodland walks; hot tub to hire
  • A few minutes' walk from a nature reserve with fishing pools
Grownups! If you seek serenity, scenery and nature-spotting on holiday, this is the Shropshire site for you. Adjacent to the mere of Colemere and set on the lake's south side, adults-only Colemere Caravan Park is in a countryside setting on five acres of wildlife-laden land with peaceful walks all around – and a quarter of a mile from Wood Lane nature reserve, which the expert folk at the BBC describe as one of the best birdwatching sites in Shropshire. Owners Dave and Ingrid have put a lot of thought into ensuring that guests are kept comfy at this peaceful and popular little site: as well as a good range of accommodation options, guests have access to a fully-equipped and cute social area, all hand-built and including a kitchen with fridge, kettle, utensils, pots and microwave. Firepits are available on request and guests can bring their own barbecues. And for keeping toasty after that, a Nordic wood-fired hot tub overlooking the lily pond is available to hire in the afternoons and evenings for four-hour periods (couples only). Picnic tables are dotted around to place the campfire food on, and the park has well-kept separate bathrooms for ladies and gents.

What customers say

This adults-only campsite is praised for its beautiful, tranquil setting by Colemere lake, offering direct access to lovely walks and local attractions. Guests appreciate the spacious, well-maintained pitches and the thoughtful communal facilities, including a social hub with kitchen amenities. The owners are consistently described as friendly, helpful, and accommodating. While the site is generally very clean, some mention that the shower and toilet facilities could benefit from updating, and WiFi signal can be intermittent. The natural surroundings and abundant wildlife are a significant draw.

Electric grass campervan pitch

Liked This was a gem of a site as far as we were concerned. Beautiful landscaped pitches, wildlife all around, and a beautiful lake walk some 20 meters from our pitch. Everything was quirky and beautifully put together. Thought the communal hub was a great idea and would be great if it was raining or you didn’t feel like just staying in your camper. Weather was good when we visited which is always good but will definitely book again to experience all seasons.

Electric grass campervan pitch

Liked The peaceful atmosphere, lovely surroundings and friendly owners. Lots of easy walks with lovely views across the lakes and canals. Easy to get into the local town, Ellesmere, which has some nice independent shops, good pubs and a big supermarket.

Electric grass campervan pitch

Liked Lovely location
Great camp site
Clean, very well thought out
Dave was so welcoming
Dave also very kindly lent me a longer hook up lead
Really liked the little social cabin to take a bottle of wine and sit on the comfy seats

Disliked It’s not a criticism but a couple more toilet cubicles probably needed for size of site before too long

Electric grass campervan pitch

Liked Lovely setting and views, good location. Lots of walking trails and plenty of nature to see, in and around the campsite. Nice communal area with sofas and TV.

Disliked Pitches aren't very well kept, or flat! Several tough roots coming through, which pierced our groundsheet and lots of small stones around, which we had to clear before we could set up.Wouldn't need too much work to clear and level the designated areas properly, for a perfect pitch.

Information given on arrival was mostly about the walks around the campsite, virtually no information given about the campsite itself or its amenities.
Hot tub hire was available at a cost of £50/session! -which is quite extortionate.

There was a petrol/diesel generator switched on each day from quite early to around 6PM which was quite audible and annoying from our pitch, although appreciate that pitches further away probably couldn't hear it.

Showers and toilets very clean, however a single towel provided in each toilet block for everyone to use is not the most hygienic way to dry hands these days! (even though they were changed daily.)

Wifi very temperamental.

The campsite is adults only, so no loud/screaming kids which is great (we've done our time with family campsites and now deserve quieter adult time!😀) However, dogs are allowed (which is also great) but unfortunately there were a couple of really 'yappy' dogs when we stayed and their owners didn't seem too bothered if the other camper's peace and quiet was spoilt by their lack of control/care of their animals.

From the manager: Hello thanks for your review , I would just like to point out , we do have around 30 perfectly level pitches , as well as a few not so level , Bohemian pitches , with views to die for ! The generator you refer to , was actually a temporary fan that was in place to cool the inverter of the solar system due to the extreme hot weather ! We do use an old towel dry your hands system , which as you say are kept dry & clean ! However our system also does not have exit door handles , In which case you have to handle as you leave !!!! ,It is a fact that these door handles as you leave [ This day & age ] toilet loos have been scientifically proven to be contaminated with faecal matter , E Coli , Staph A , ABE , Etc !!! ! As far as dogs are concerned [ I have handled working dogs } we do our best , within reason to , make owners responsible , but on rare occasions , as on all sites , there's the odd occasions where owners are unable to do so ! It's one of them !

Many thanks

Dave

Local attractions

There's stacks to do in the surrounding area, whether you want to stick close to home by foot or pedal, or drive a bit further afield to the towns, tourist attractions and landscapes of Shropshire, Cheshire and north-east Wales – the city of Chester is 40 minutes away and Llangollen on the River Dee reachable within an hour. On the doorstep, tackle the two-mile walk along the canal towpath to Ellesmere or make your way via the purpose-built circular walk and through a wooded area of rhododendrons around the mere and nature reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest with species galore to see like otters, lapwings and water birds. The reserve also has several deep fishing pools well-stocked with catfish and big carp; more fishing – and carp – can be had nearby at Blackmere along the towpath from Colmere. Also nearby, wander into Colemere village to see the fifteenth-century thatched cottages, listed in the Domesday Book, to Ellesmere for food festivals, regattas and boat rides on the mere, or drive to Rednal Karting, Paintballing and Laser for an exciting time ten minutes away. Castles including Chirk and Whittington are a doddle to drive to too. If being on the water is your thing, a narrowboat marina is a three-minute drive away from the caravan park and both Colemere and Whitemere sailing clubs are within easy reach. By car, the standard of whitewater rafting at Bala Adventure and Watersports will have you foaming at the mouth – a milder form of the sport, along with abseiling, gorge walking, a steam railway and horse-drawn boat trips is available over the border in Wales at Llangollen.
