Looking over the pitches

  • Peaceful, well-kept 112-acre site on the south shore of Rutland Water
  • A 10-minute drive from Oakham and Uppingham; golf club next door
  • Direct access to the walking/bike path around the lake's edge
You may have visited Rutland Water before, but have you ever spent the night right there on its banks? Well, here’s your chance to do just that, because Lyndon Top is spread out over a peaceful 112 acres on the southern shore, with stunning views over the water. And while those views are wonderful, there’s a fair amount more to see around the lake’s shores – so it’s handy that you can set straight out from the site for walks or bike rides on the path that runs all the way around the edge (22 miles in total). On top of that, there’s plenty of choice for other outdoorsy activities, including fly fishing, birdwatching, golf, canoeing and windsurfing (along with boat cruises and lakeside dining if you’re after minimal activity). Think a barbecue at your pitch might be more your kind of thing? Top plan. Barbecues are allowed at Lyndon Top, and you can pick up whatever supplies you need in Oakham or Uppingham (both 10 minutes’ drive), or while out in Stamford (15 minutes). Back at base, it’s a peaceful setup that welcomes families, couples and solo campers (and dogs, if you’d like to bring them) to spacious pitches in a tree-lined field. Handy facilities include picnic tables and a chemical disposal point, along with a very smart and well-equipped modern amenities block that houses stylish toilets and showers, a washing-up area, a family bathroom and accessible facilities, Lyndon Top is not the place for a party of any sort, so the site doesn’t accept bookings from single-sex groups or other non-family groups.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The space, the views, the location, the Wash House, the style, the welcome. Works as a destination itself or a stopover on a drive north from London. The bird reserve and aquapark are great.

Disliked The girls (both 14) found it a bit bare and empty.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The new toilet/shower block is lovely. Showers are fabulous and all was clean.

Disliked No amenities close by. Didn’t really bother me but my city partner was perplexed with the isolation of it all. We left after one night instead of staying over another night having explored Rutland Water.
Quite expensive and electric was even more expensive!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Loved that I could pick the location I wanted on site, was exceptionally clean and to say we had an awful lot of rain they kept on top of the cleanliness of the place with all the moody boots passing through.
The toilets are sensation for a campsite.
the views are lovely and all within walking distance of Rutland water and the nature reserve.
The staff we lovely and welcoming and was very often driving around checking in on the site which as a solo traveller made me feel even more safe than I already did on this cosy site.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Location, scenery, staff, lots of space, 6pm check out on departure day. The smell of the cedar from the toilet block. Everywhere kept clean

Disliked Whilst the toilet/shower block looks very nice it just isn’t very functional, a few tweaks would make it so much better, more space in shower to hang stuff, brighter lighting it’s far too dark and buns next to washing up sinks

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Loads of space to pitch, a choice of many fields. Great dog walking all around. We had a lovely view and saw some birds of prey. A peaceful atmosphere despite it being a busy bank holiday weekend. The facilities are top notch and extremely clean at all times. Staff were easy to find if needed and were friendly. We loved it here and can’t wait to return. What a great site and value for money.

Disliked Nothing to dislike except we would have preferred to be able to have a gazebo allowed.

The area immediately around Rutland Water is a real playground for those who love outdoor activities. Rutland Water Golf Club is pretty much next door, and good access to the lakeside trail means you can easily get out to cycle around the entire perimeter or take a walk to Normanton church (an hour’s walk), set on a little spur in the lake. Fishing (for trout and pike) and birdwatching are available in several spots around the lake, while up on the north shore you can play miniature golf, hire watersports kit or bounce across the inflatables at Rutland Aqua Park (15 minutes’ drive). When it’s time for a rest, head to the sandy beach area (10 minutes) or take a cruise across the water (15 minutes). Away from the lake, you may like to stroll among the blooms at Barnsdale Gardens (15 minutes), see the vintage trains at Rocks By Rail Living Ironstone Museum (15 minutes) or step inside some grand buildings with trips to Rockingham Castle (20 minutes) and Burghley House (25 minutes).
