You may have visited Rutland Water before, but have you ever spent the night right there on its banks? Well, here’s your chance to do just that, because Lyndon Top is spread out over a peaceful 112 acres on the southern shore, with stunning views over the water. And while those views are wonderful, there’s a fair amount more to see around the lake’s shores – so it’s handy that you can set straight out from the site for walks or bike rides on the path that runs all the way around the edge (22 miles in total). On top of that, there’s plenty of choice for other outdoorsy activities, including fly fishing, birdwatching, golf, canoeing and windsurfing (along with boat cruises and lakeside dining if you’re after minimal activity). Think a barbecue at your pitch might be more your kind of thing? Top plan. Barbecues are allowed at Lyndon Top, and you can pick up whatever supplies you need in Oakham or Uppingham (both 10 minutes’ drive), or while out in Stamford (15 minutes). Back at base, it’s a peaceful setup that welcomes families, couples and solo campers (and dogs, if you’d like to bring them) to spacious pitches in a tree-lined field. Handy facilities include picnic tables and a chemical disposal point, along with a very smart and well-equipped modern amenities block that houses stylish toilets and showers, a washing-up area, a family bathroom and accessible facilities, Lyndon Top is not the place for a party of any sort, so the site doesn’t accept bookings from single-sex groups or other non-family groups.

Liked Site itself is quite large but generally flat, very new and the facilities are fantastic,one thing in the shower block though the strange sinks? Hand washing only ,electric hook up having to download yet another app to get switched on? No big deal but is this the future? I shall certainly be going back

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked We stayed in the non-electric field this weekend and loved it. There are no demarcated pitches, so you can set up wherever you fancy, and the views over Rutland Water are wonderful. The field slopes gently, but our levelling blocks got us level with no fuss.
The facilities block is pure luxury. I've never seen a campsite one so stunning. The showers are monsoon-style with plenty of hot water, everything was immaculately clean, and the décor wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel.
The location is great for getting out and about. Footpaths and cycleways around the lake are right on hand, and we walked into Oakham in about an hour and a half.
We also really loved the incredibly flexible check in and check out times. They allow non-electric pitches to stay until 6:00 p.m. on the day of checkout which makes booking a weekend away much better because you can make the most of Sunday in your new surroundings.
Highly recommended

Disliked I believe the price of electricity was going to be an additional £10 a night and that has a maximum usage of 8 kilowatt hours. 8 kWh of electricity will cost approximately £2.11. That's the opposite of good value.
Another small drawback: we were told which way we had to face our van. With a pop top, that meant the wind was hitting the highest part of the roof, which isn't ideal in gusty conditions. It would be helpful if campers with pop tops could choose their orientation.

Liked The general area was very nice. There was a good view of and access to Rutland Water. Everything appeared clean and up to date. Staff were very friendly, helpful and amenable. All the customers we spoke with were very nice.

Disliked No hardstanding pitches available. The Metpow App was a bit of a faff. It didn't work at first (nor for our neighbours). I had to get a member of staff to adjust something on their computer to get it to work. Not a great deal of room in the showers to get dressed afterwards. Just a stool and two hooks to hang dry clothes and towel on. The only washbasins available were in the general open area. The chemical toilet emptying area was fairly unpleasant.

Liked Lovely drive onto the site, staff member came out to welcome us at barrier and explained where we was to park up. Looked a very clean and well kept site.
Parked up and had to download the met power app as we had an EHU grass pitch, sorted pretty quickly you get 8kw per day in with the price of the stay. The view was good, shower/toilet block only one onsite think there was 5/6 female toilets and around 4 showers (which were amazing), might have been more but that’s all we noticed, and assuming mens side was the same, please be aware the windows in the bathrooms are tinted but you can see straight through them both ways, you can’t see the showers but you can see the urinals through the men’s window.
Good walks down to the water, lots of wildlife and when we left we noticed a pub and cafe about a 5 minute walk.
We wasn’t told where the elsan point was so watched where people was going with the cassettes, it’s at the back of the shower block, you can’t drive to it so have to carry it over. We will definitely return

Disliked A booklet/information of the site where everything is and what’s around.
A tea/coffee room would be good in reception, it’s huge and there’s just a desk with 2 people sat there.

Liked Friendly service, accessible site and super well maintained facilities. A great site for our first Campervan pitch, highly recommended.

Disliked As new campers, it was generally a fab place. Only improvement to suggest is that we were a little confused where to pitch up when first arrived, and maybe a marked way to the sluice area on the way out.

Local attractions

The area immediately around Rutland Water is a real playground for those who love outdoor activities. Rutland Water Golf Club is pretty much next door, and good access to the lakeside trail means you can easily get out to cycle around the entire perimeter or take a walk to Normanton church (an hour’s walk), set on a little spur in the lake. Fishing (for trout and pike) and birdwatching are available in several spots around the lake, while up on the north shore you can play miniature golf, hire watersports kit or bounce across the inflatables at Rutland Aqua Park (15 minutes’ drive). When it’s time for a rest, head to the sandy beach area (10 minutes) or take a cruise across the water (15 minutes). Away from the lake, you may like to stroll among the blooms at Barnsdale Gardens (15 minutes), see the vintage trains at Rocks By Rail Living Ironstone Museum (15 minutes) or step inside some grand buildings with trips to Rockingham Castle (20 minutes) and Burghley House (25 minutes).
