You may have visited Rutland Water before, but have you ever spent the night right there on its banks? Well, here’s your chance to do just that, because Lyndon Top is spread out over a peaceful 112 acres on the southern shore, with stunning views over the water. And while those views are wonderful, there’s a fair amount more to see around the lake’s shores – so it’s handy that you can set straight out from the site for walks or bike rides on the path that runs all the way around the edge (22 miles in total). On top of that, there’s plenty of choice for other outdoorsy activities, including fly fishing, birdwatching, golf, canoeing and windsurfing (along with boat cruises and lakeside dining if you’re after minimal activity). Think a barbecue at your pitch might be more your kind of thing? Top plan. Barbecues are allowed at Lyndon Top, and you can pick up whatever supplies you need in Oakham or Uppingham (both 10 minutes’ drive), or while out in Stamford (15 minutes). Back at base, it’s a peaceful setup that welcomes families, couples and solo campers (and dogs, if you’d like to bring them) to spacious pitches in a tree-lined field. Handy facilities include picnic tables and a chemical disposal point, along with a very smart and well-equipped modern amenities block that houses stylish toilets and showers, a washing-up area, a family bathroom and accessible facilities, Lyndon Top is not the place for a party of any sort, so the site doesn’t accept bookings from single-sex groups or other non-family groups.

  • Group bookings of 2 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

  • Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

  • 8 kWh of electricity is included per day. Additional usage is metered on site at £0.40 per kWh and must be paid onsite via debit/credit card via the QR code/website link provided.

Liked It’s a brand new site and the facilities make you feel like you’re staying in a hotel. We will be returning back in spring. I just hope other customers look after it because if they don’t it will really let down the place.

Disliked The hooks behind the bathroom doors are stuck on and I think over time won’t be able to hold dry robes or anything of such weight.

Liked Lovely views, good open spaces.
Fancy toilet block

Disliked The toilet block was a long way from our pitch and although it was lovely it did not seem very practical for camping.
There needed to be blinds on the toilet block windows as you could see the urinals from outside.

Liked We’ve just had an amazing couple of nights here at Lyndon Top. Friendly and well organised welcome and we were shown to our pitch by a lovely gentleman who explained the rules and electric app.
The site is huge but has a few separated areas / fields to choose from.
We requested an EHU pitch close to the facilities and we were lucky enough to be given pitch 29 (which was the closest although still a slight walk to the loo) very grateful for this.
The facilities are modern and absolutely gorgeous. Felt like you were in a hotel, smelt amazing and were always clean! Plenty of toilets and showers (not unisex) all with heated floors.
Couple of outside sinks also for washing up.
We had a slight view of the water which was lovely.
There’s no cafe or shop on site but shops and pubs nearby.
O2 phone signal was rubbish but EE was fine (nothing against the site but just an observation)
Very clean and well kept site and we will be back!

Disliked Only one toilet block, as I said before very modern no individual wash stations and no electrical shaver sockets.

What a great retreat

They now added extra hooks in the showers and also Shelves for shampoos ect.
They have listened to what their customers need. Hats of to them

The area immediately around Rutland Water is a real playground for those who love outdoor activities. Rutland Water Golf Club is pretty much next door, and good access to the lakeside trail means you can easily get out to cycle around the entire perimeter or take a walk to Normanton church (an hour’s walk), set on a little spur in the lake. Fishing (for trout and pike) and birdwatching are available in several spots around the lake, while up on the north shore you can play miniature golf, hire watersports kit or bounce across the inflatables at Rutland Aqua Park (15 minutes’ drive). When it’s time for a rest, head to the sandy beach area (10 minutes) or take a cruise across the water (15 minutes). Away from the lake, you may like to stroll among the blooms at Barnsdale Gardens (15 minutes), see the vintage trains at Rocks By Rail Living Ironstone Museum (15 minutes) or step inside some grand buildings with trips to Rockingham Castle (20 minutes) and Burghley House (25 minutes).
