General

  • Luxury glamping site on seven acres of private land and vineyard
  • Half a mile's stroll from Uppingham; 10 mins' drive to Rutland Water
  • Individually designed and fully equipped canopy tents; firepit outside

If you’re surmising that stays at Vineyard and Canvas revolve around settling into a swish tent overlooking fields full of grapes, well, you’d be absolutely right.

This luxurious glampsite, opened in 2019 and covering seven acres of private land, is set on the hills of high Rutland and has fab views. Each canopy bell tent sits in its own private space of 24 square metres, with hidden picnic areas and secluded hideaways all around.

Each accommodation is individually designed and comes with contemporary furnishings, a handmade kingsize oak bed, kitchen equipment and safety items including smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Step outside and you’ll spot a firepit, verandah, tables, chairs and a parasol too.

Travelling light? The site team can sort bedding and towels for glamping guests or you're welcome to bring all your own kit along (including a tent if you desire something a little more low-key).

And for off-base eats and explores? The historic town of Uppingham (half a mile away) has a food shop and takeaways, along with art shops, fashion boutiques, bistros and a Friday market. Wine bars, pubs and award-winning restaurants are within easy driving distance around Rutland.

Dogs are very welcome at the park but must be kept on a lead at all times due to the numerous rabbits and other wild animals on the grounds. The park asks that you please respect the land and its occupants.

Lovely tent. Scenery was very nice. Owners very welcoming and kind. The grounds are undulating and hilly but that all added to the charm. View from our tent was lovely.

    Disliked:

Traffic very noisy... I hadn’t noticed location was right next to main road when I booked. Ear plugs were provided though. Such a shame.

Lovely welcome from the owners. The photos available didn't do the site justice, it's even better.

Toilet & shower facilities are great. The kitchen was complete with a camping gas cooker and enough gas to last. The firepit was stocked with plenty of wood for the first night. More wood was available for consecutive nights for a small fee.

Site feels very secure with a locked gate, your own key, and cctv over the car parking area.

Fairly rural and free of light pollution. So much so, we were clearly able to identify loads of different constellations and even saw shooting stars.

Also spotted lots of different types of birds, including wild birds of prey.

Very good 4G signal in the area too... if you still need to remain connected...

    Disliked:

From the manager...

Thank you James.
Kind words from a valued guest and a lovely family.
We are immensely pleased you enjoyed our beautiful site and yes, the night sky is especially pretty in Rutland.
Shooting stars are a frequent sight by guests, I hope little Milo managed to catch one....
Take care and hope to see you again soon.
Tony & Rosarin.

We had a fantastic stay at Vineyard & Canvas. It is a great site with lovely owners. The tent was huge, well elevated, spacious, but also private and felt secluded despite being on a site. We didn't realise we had to bring our own bedding (perhaps a note on the main website would help with that) but thankfully this was resolved and we then had everything we needed to enjoy the weekend. The site felt safe and we were given a personal key for the main gate. CCTV was prominent and there is multiple solar lights to help with those midnight toilet trips. The owners were friendly and happy to give us advice on where to visit nearby, even down to the best local takeaways. The firepit was perfect to keep us warm on the cooler eves. It's a very clean site with no litter, and all the relevant bins for any rubbish. We took our little dog with us, he's still a puppy so this was his first time glamping but he had a lovely time. It felt secure for him.

    Disliked:

Not so much a dislike but more of a suggestion. The showers and toilets were really clean at all times but being combined it meant the Sunday morning wait for the toilet was really long, 9 people in the queue before us and many were showering. Perhaps having them separate or an extra toilet would help with this.

The beds were so comfortable. We were pleasantly surprised with the rain showers. Our tent was perfect; bed enough for 2 adults and 4 children from 13-3 years.
Everything was clean and our pitch was secluded. Perfect for cricket and football and hide and seek.
    It felt really secure.
We had a lovely walk into Uppingham on 2 occasions; fish and chips in the brilliant park.
The Uppingham bakery was fantastic and a small co-op for supplies.
The owners turned up on the second evening with juice for the children, chilled Prosecco for us & extra wood for our fire pit.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately road noise is significant day and night. Ear plugs were supplied.

We stayed in bell tent 3
    It was amazing
The owners walked us around the site and showed us where everything was.
They then took us to our tent and explained what was included, we had everything from a cloth and bowl to the log fire and a gas stove.
We had everything we needed for our stay
The whole site was in immaculate condition
So much space and the tents are really far apart so you have great privacy

Local attractions

Travelling on public transport? Great news: Oakham (10 minutes’ drive) has trains to and from London, Cambridge and Birmingham.

If you’re exploring by car, head over to Rockingham Castle (10 minutes), for a tour of the Norman building and a treat in the tearoom, or creep along to Bugtopia The Zoo (15 minutes) with the kids to interact with 75 different types of reptiles and invertebrates.

Try to spot a few creatures out in the wild as well with a bit of birdwatching at Rutland Water (20 minutes); this lake is also a go-to for fishing, watersports and pleasure cruises. It has a 25-mile walking and cycling track around the perimeter too if you’re up for a wander.

Already explored all of Uppingham but still fancy town times? Mosey over to Market Harborough (30 minutes) and idle in the independent shops or look to Leicester (40 minutes) for strolls around a 900-year-old cathedral. The nearby King Richard III Visitor Centre gives guests the lowdown on the royal’s life and you can head to Leicester Castle as well to see the place where he lived out his final days.
