  • Fabulous location on the south edge of Rutland Water near Manton
  • An hour's walk to Normanton Church; Oakham 10 minutes' drive
  • Quiet site with lake views; barbecues and campfires permitted
Looking at the lush rural surroundings of Rutland Water these days, it’s hard to believe this is a man-made lake… but man-made it is indeed, and in fact the largest of its kind in England. It’s both quite a feat of design and a fabulous bit of scenery – and it makes a gorgeous backdrop for stays at The Hide at Manton Bay, in a stunning location right by the lake’s edge on the south side of Rutland Water. That means you’ll be able to look out over the water at all hours from this lovely spot surrounded by apple orchards and vineyards. And of course you’ll also have prime position for all the activities on offer around the lake, including cycle rides, fishing, kayaking, golf and madcap antics at the inflatable aqua park. That said, it’s quite possible that your activity of choice may be simply strolling to the local pub (20 minutes’ walk away in Manton) before an evening of barbecuing and stargazing back at base camp. In terms of practicalities, the site has bathrooms with showers and toilets, and provides recycling facilities to help keep things eco friendly. It’s a quiet site with no amplified music allowed so that everyone can enjoy a good bit of peace while they’re here. There’s a good cluster of shops and places to eat 10 minutes’ drive away in Oakham, with more dotted around local villages.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: The hosts are great, even helped us newbies with a gas bottle issue. The site is amazing, great view and clean, nice facilities. We like the fact they are not a big block, air tight, as that just keeps the smell in whereas these are clean and fresh all the time. A special mention has the go out for the fitting of a toilet spray, a great addition for anyone who has used them before.

Disliked: A small warning. The pitches are not level and, even with ramps we could not get the fridge to light but we loved the view and the enclosed pitches so didn't care!

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Me and the children absolutely loved our stay! The site is gorgeous with stunning views. I loved that you have your own separated area which meant the children could run around without too much worry. The washing facilities were clean and tidy, I honestly couldn’t have asked for any more!

Disliked: Having to come home!

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Open aspect. Quiet site policy, secluded camping bays, views over Rutland Water and big skies. A site with developing potential when completed will be superb.

Disliked: For the camping area the loos and showers are pop up but a bit basic. Only one washing up area with no cover. Getting in and out with a large chain and padlock was a bit of a pain. But again site is evolving and sure the owners will get this right in the end. There is a need to make it very clear that it's a no music site as some users didn't respect this.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Fantastic location, on the Rutland Cycle Trail. Individual bays to camp in made it very private and peaceful, but the views over Rutland Water are amazing, and the sunsets beautiful Great welcome from Natalia, very helpful with advice on routes to cycle Showers hot, toilets clean. i wonder if the site was busier, if there was enough to cope, but it was quiet, so no issues from us

Disliked: Having ability to refreeze ice blocks would be useful, but we managed and bought ice bags to keep cooler cool
