Apple orchard by the water

  • Fabulous location on the south edge of Rutland Water near Manton
  • An hour's walk to Normanton Church; Oakham 10 minutes' drive
  • Quiet site with lake views; barbecues and campfires permitted
Looking at the lush rural surroundings of Rutland Water these days, it’s hard to believe this is a man-made lake… but man-made it is indeed, and in fact the largest of its kind in England. It’s both quite a feat of design and a fabulous bit of scenery – and it makes a gorgeous backdrop for stays at The Hide at Manton Bay, in a stunning location right by the lake’s edge on the south side of Rutland Water. That means you’ll be able to look out over the water at all hours from this lovely spot surrounded by apple orchards and vineyards. And of course you’ll also have prime position for all the activities on offer around the lake, including cycle rides, fishing, kayaking, golf and madcap antics at the inflatable aqua park. That said, it’s quite possible that your activity of choice may be simply strolling to the local pub (20 minutes’ walk away in Manton) before an evening of barbecuing and stargazing back at base camp. In terms of practicalities, the site has bathrooms with showers and toilets, and provides recycling facilities to help keep things eco friendly. It’s a quiet site with no amplified music allowed so that everyone can enjoy a good bit of peace while they’re here. There’s a good cluster of shops and places to eat 10 minutes’ drive away in Oakham, with more dotted around local villages.

What customers say

This adult-only campsite offers individual, spacious pitches separated by hedges, providing excellent privacy and stunning views of Rutland Water. Guests praise the quiet and tranquil atmosphere, friendly hosts, and the cleanliness of the rustic-style toilet and shower facilities. While most find the site well-maintained and peaceful, a few mention pitches can be sloped, and some desire more covered washing-up areas. Despite minor points, many express a desire to return.

Liked Well kept tidy site with good facilities. Nice secluded private pitches. Great views over the water and surrounding beautiful countryside. Clean 'rustic' style toilet and shower facilities. Adult only and no music made it peaceful and relaxing.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked The views from our pitch were amazing. The pitch was well kept and a great size. The showers and toilets were always very clean together with the washing station. A super site and highly recommended.

Disliked Having to leave the fantastic view and sad that we couldn’t buy a bottle of wine from the lovely grapes growing!! 😀

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Basic site with small outdoor shower block and toilets. Showers were excellent (up there with the best I have seen on any campsite. Each visitor had their own pitch that was enclosed in hedging giving lots of privacy.

Disliked All pitches were on a slope meaning we had to park side on to the slope and use wheel levellers but even then we were still sloping to the side.

No on-sight shop. We went fully equipped so be aware of this.

It was a bit pricey for what it was but as it was right next to the venue for the Global Bird Fair it made getting to and from it very easy...which made up for the price a little.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Close proximity to the water.

Disliked Arrived and the access gate was locked.
Called the contact number, no response.
Managed to gain access but no reception or persons responsible on site. Therefore no idea what to do or where to go.
Site generally untidy, uncut high hedges obscuring views of the lake. Booked for two night left the next morning.
The worst campervan site experience we’ve had.
Certainly no worth the money.
