  • Fabulous location on the south edge of Rutland Water near Manton
  • An hour's walk to Normanton Church; Oakham 10 minutes' drive
  • Quiet site with lake views; barbecues and campfires permitted
Looking at the lush rural surroundings of Rutland Water these days, it’s hard to believe this is a man-made lake… but man-made it is indeed, and in fact the largest of its kind in England. It’s both quite a feat of design and a fabulous bit of scenery – and it makes a gorgeous backdrop for stays at The Hide at Manton Bay, in a stunning location right by the lake’s edge on the south side of Rutland Water. That means you’ll be able to look out over the water at all hours from this lovely spot surrounded by apple orchards and vineyards. And of course you’ll also have prime position for all the activities on offer around the lake, including cycle rides, fishing, kayaking, golf and madcap antics at the inflatable aqua park. That said, it’s quite possible that your activity of choice may be simply strolling to the local pub (20 minutes’ walk away in Manton) before an evening of barbecuing and stargazing back at base camp. In terms of practicalities, the site has bathrooms with showers and toilets, and provides recycling facilities to help keep things eco friendly. It’s a quiet site with no amplified music allowed so that everyone can enjoy a good bit of peace while they’re here. There’s a good cluster of shops and places to eat 10 minutes’ drive away in Oakham, with more dotted around local villages.

What customers say

This adult-only site has spacious, private pitches with stunning Rutland Water views for a peaceful getaway. Clean facilities are praised, but some mention basic amenities and no covered dishwashing. Generally quiet, a few guests noted noise, pitch slopes, and lumpy ground. Electric hook-up and recycling were requested.

Primitive grass campervan or tent campsite

Liked Loved the site, absolutely beautiful view from a well laid out and clean site. Very quiet when I stayed. NOT a complaint at all, but I could have done with some signposts to the loos, it took me a while to find them!

Disliked Nothing at all, I will definitely be going back

Primitive grass campervan or tent campsite

Liked We had the most wonderful stay at The Hide at Manton Bay, the camping pitches were spacious and private with amazing views over Rutland Water. The toilets, showers and washing up facilities were back to basics but complimented the site, had plentiful hot water and kept spotlessly clean. We were lucky enough to visit on a weekend when.there was a pop up food van on site, the burgers were amazing!!! The Lyndon nature reserve is a must visit, lucky to see Osprey, bring your binoculars!

Disliked Nothing to dislike here.

Primitive grass campervan or tent campsite

Liked Location was fabulous, with stunning views of Rutland Water and proximity to the nature reserve (just be wary the site is at the bottom of a very steep incline).
Facilities were funky in design and kept clean - good showers.
For the most part extremely quiet and pitches have some privacy.
Owners very friendly.
Would go again.

Disliked We went at a quiet time but I imagine two toilets and showers for all the tent pitches at a busy time might get difficult!
The water for the washing sink was never hot (though the shower was).
