  • Peaceful rural site with panoramic views of the Chiltern Hills
  • On the Ridgeway Trail, less than 30 minutes from Oxford and Reading
  • Dog-friendly site; campfires permitted, with wood for sale
Disconnect from the world and plug in to nature at Ridgeway View Campsite, a spacious, back-to-basics site under 30 minutes by car from both Oxford and Reading. Generous pitches here are surrounded by Oxfordshire wheatfields with the Chiltern Hills beyond. This quiet site takes its name from the ancient trackway it backs onto. Now one of the UK’s popular National Trails, the Ridgeway 87-mile route is known as ‘Britain’s oldest road’ – walk here to follow in the footsteps of 5,000 years' worth of travellers. Less than a mile away, visitors can link up with the wildlife-rich Thames Path too. Also within walking distance (just far enough to build up an appetite for lunch) are several great pubs – plot your routes to take in the hostelries in Crowmarsh Gifford or Hailey. Something a bit more active in mind (or need to get some stress out)? Book a session at Ridgeway View's own axe-throwing range, which is a 15-minute drive away from the site. For stocking up on essentials, taking tea and cake or pottering around the shops, pop to the historic market town of Wallingford (five minutes’ drive), where you should also seek out the blue plaque for famed novelist Agatha Christie (British TV watchers may also recognise the area as the setting for Midsomer Murders). Half an hour’s drive to the north brings you to Oxford, and the same distance south is Reading. Guests have access to just a few back-to-basics facilities, including portable toilets, three cold-water showers and one gas-heated shower. Barbecues and campfires are permitted if raised off the ground – firewood is available to buy, and cooking slabs can be hired. Considerate dog owners are welcome, and there’s plenty of space nearby for the canines to stretch their legs. On the farm, there’s a no-noise policy at night past 10.30pm, so that everyone can enjoy a bit of rural peace.

What customers say

This back-to-basics campsite offers vast, level pitches in a beautiful rural location with stunning views and direct access to the Ridgeway. Visitors praise the peace, quiet, and ample space, along with clean, well-maintained portaloos and cold showers. Fire pits are available for hire. Issues mentioned include occasional noise from large groups and the basic nature of facilities, though this is largely as advertised and reflected in the value. The site is highly recommended for those seeking a tranquil, nature-focused escape.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Scenic campsite, surrounded by fields and with easy access to walk along the Ridgeway and other walking routes. Plenty of space to pitch up a tent away from others. I paid extra to check out late but it seemed silly as there was hardly anyone there.

Disliked There was a lot of noise from motorbikes on the nearby road, which disrupted an otherwise very peaceful location. The campsite field and surrounding paths weren't suitable for cycling. It's a farming area so there was the standard farm smell lingering in the air.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The campsite is a large, fairly flat grassy field that is ideal for tents. The Ridgeway runs along one side of it and is accessible from the campsite which is surrounded by attractive countryside while at the same time not being very far from Wallingford (approximately 40 minutes to one hour on foot depending on speed and route chosen…..obviously much quicker by car but I didn’t drive there so I don’t know what it is like for parking).
Facilities are fairly basic (cold water showers, open air washing up sinks and portaloos) but that is made clear when booking and is reflected in the price and is less than what my friends paid in a hotel in Wallingford.

Disliked Not a dislike but more of a recommendation that it might be useful for signage to say that the water is drinkable. A couple of people I asked who had been there for a few days said that they had been drinking it with no ill effects and another mentioned that all of the water comes in on one pipe and is drinkable.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Simplicity of the arrangements, spaciousness of the site, amazing views, peaceful vibe despite many campers

Disliked Not a dislike, just a wish for more showers on site.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks Marta, we have discussed adding more showers but it's not currently viable with the current layout. Watch this space though as we are looking to change a few things next season.

Liked The space and tranquility, great views and freedom to pitch where you like

Disliked Cold water showers are absolutely fine but need a bit of clean/ netting to keep all the inspects out!

From the manager: Thanks Lisa, lovely photos :)

The insects tend to do their own thing even after we clean the showers I'm afraid!

Non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Soo much space! Huge, well kept field. Lovely hosts who checked up on us daily. It’s a 5 minute drive from multiple spots for swimming on the Thames.

Disliked Stone cold showers - but what is camping without it.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks Michael, love the look of the mini pizza oven! Some campers really pulling out the stops for one upping each other on their setups this season!

Disliked That the water from the showers went directly to the ground. There was a lot of litter lying around and the bins at the Loos were full eben as there has been No other campers

From the manager: Sorry you found litter on site. It is regularly checked but we do ask that if something doesn't look right that guests contact us immediately.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked A lovely location, perfect access to paths and tracks, and plenty of space (even on a busy, good-weather weekend). The very simple facilities are described accurately on the website, so as long as you are not expecting luxury, this site does the job perfectly.

I was not expecting to enjoy the cold showers, but there is something wonderful in having the sky as the roof to the shower cubicle!

I plan to visit again sometime soon.

Disliked There was a problem with water supply on the site for a few hours, but the problem was dealt with efficiently and those staying on site were kept informed about what was happening. Bottles of drinking water were supplied while the repairs were going on, so I thought it was well handled.

From the manager: Thanks for the great feedback!

Non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Liked the informal feel of it: our visit didn’t feel “managed” or commercial or supervised, and yet everything was well planned and executed from check-in, fire pit and wood collection, instructions and expectations, check-out.
Everyone on site respected the rules on music, no cars and silence after 10.30pm, etc. so we could all just enjoy what we were there for - nature, the big skies, awesome views, and countryside peace and quiet. Wonderful!
Also liked that we were able to just book for a single night.

Disliked I would’ve liked to be able to bring our own raised fire pit and fuel. Having to buy this onsite was almost half the cost of the total visit.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for the great review.

You are welcome to bring your own firepit, just not fuel as we can't guarantee its origin.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Great venue well maintained - toilets were fine despite there being quite a few campers… I didn’t have a shower but they looked clean and usable. Very easy to find/get on to - very easy going campsite with mixed groups, but in our experience no loud groups or music, so very calm. Lovely views - spotted some hot air balloons in the distance.

Disliked We pre booked a fire pit kit but didn’t get any info about how to get it. Text the number it said to text but didn’t get anything back. Luckily some other people who bought some on the day got responses pretty quickly so we asked them for the code and showed them we had paid so were able to give the kids their marshmallows so all is well that ends well.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Glad you had a nice time Emilie.

I'll check with the phone holder regarding the firepit query, it's very unusual for something to be missed but great that the marshmallows were a success!

Local attractions

On a summer’s evening, there’s nothing quite like messing about on the river – hire a boat nearby at Wallingford Bridge or Benson Waterfront (both five minutes' drive). Sipping a glass of wine comes a close second, so Brightwell Vineyard (10 minutes) could be a good shout too. For wildlife enthusiasts, Cholsey Marsh Nature Reserve is 10 minutes away by car or a pleasant hour’s walk taking in the Thames Path along the river. And children (and quite possibly grownups) are bound to love a visit to Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary (15 minutes’ drive). To get the blood pumping, you could brave the local skydiving (five minutes) and watersports (15 minutes) centres.
