Disconnect from the world and plug in to nature at Ridgeway View Campsite, a spacious, back-to-basics site under 30 minutes by car from both Oxford and Reading. Generous pitches here are surrounded by Oxfordshire wheatfields with the Chiltern Hills beyond. This quiet site takes its name from the ancient trackway it backs onto. Now one of the UK’s popular National Trails, the Ridgeway 87-mile route is known as ‘Britain’s oldest road’ – walk here to follow in the footsteps of 5,000 years' worth of travellers. Less than a mile away, visitors can link up with the wildlife-rich Thames Path too. Also within walking distance (just far enough to build up an appetite for lunch) are several great pubs – plot your routes to take in the hostelries in Crowmarsh Gifford or Hailey. Something a bit more active in mind (or need to get some stress out)? Book a session at Ridgeway View's own axe-throwing range, which is a 15-minute drive away from the site. For stocking up on essentials, taking tea and cake or pottering around the shops, pop to the historic market town of Wallingford (five minutes’ drive), where you should also seek out the blue plaque for famed novelist Agatha Christie (British TV watchers may also recognise the area as the setting for Midsomer Murders). Half an hour’s drive to the north brings you to Oxford, and the same distance south is Reading. Guests have access to just a few back-to-basics facilities, including portable toilets and four cold-water showers. Barbecues and campfires are permitted if raised off the ground – firewood is available to buy, and cooking slabs can be hired. Considerate dog owners are welcome, and there’s plenty of space nearby for the canines to stretch their legs. On the farm, there’s a no-noise policy at night past 10.30pm, so that everyone can enjoy a bit of rural peace.

No em va agradar No pushchair walks from site but there were plenty of walks if you didn't need a pushchair. Toilets could have done with a bit of a scrub

Em va agradar The size of the pitches is great and not being restricted to an allocated area means it's easy to pitch multiple tents without being to close to other campers. The toilets may be portaloos but I've never seen cleaner loos on a campsite! Absolutely spotless and odour free. The no noise after 10.30 is very much appreciated.

No em va agradar Not a fault as such but the site is quite high up and exposed so can be a quite windy. not a problem but good to know in regard to pitching tents. The upside is really good views!

Em va agradar Set up wherever you wish. Clean loos, a proper tap you can get a water carrier under (annoying when there's just a sink, which there is too if you need it.) Lovely views, well maintained (very flat) grass.

No em va agradar Another passing place on the road on the way in would be handy - but aware that's not in your control.

Em va agradar Simple but effective - a big field, with water taps, cold showers, and (relatively clean) portaloos. Can’t really fault it. Wasn’t particularly busy when we stayed, despite it being a bank holiday weekend, which meant it was pretty quiet and tranquil. Nice views.

No em va agradar We were told at 10pm to turn our music off, it was on quietly and we already knew that we had to be quiet after 10.30 so this was a bit sad as our children were dancing and having fun.

No em va agradar There were no bins other than those at the entrance which meant rubbish accumulated around the sinks where people had just dumped stuff.

On a summer’s evening, there’s nothing quite like messing about on the river – hire a boat nearby at Wallingford Bridge or Benson Waterfront (both five minutes' drive). Sipping a glass of wine comes a close second, so Brightwell Vineyard (10 minutes) could be a good shout too. For wildlife enthusiasts, Cholsey Marsh Nature Reserve is 10 minutes away by car or a pleasant hour’s walk taking in the Thames Path along the river.
