Easy access to the A52

General

  • Family-run lakeside site with direct access to the A52
  • A 20-minute drive from Newark; 25 minutes from central Nottingham
  • Well-stocked fishing lake with several species; kids' play area

Whether you're an angling fan or not, after a night at Elton Barn Fishery and Retreat you may very well wake up and realise that you're hooked on these fab lakeside views.

This family-run site is an all-round wildlife haven: badgers, foxes, rabbits, geese, ducks and moorhens can regularly be spotted on or around the water's surface, while carp, tench, roach, rudd, chub and catfish prowl the depths beneath.

There are also plenty of trees around (sunset vistas over the one-acre lake are particularly splendid when viewed against a backdrop of weeping willows). The main field has even and well-kept grass and makes another pleasant spot to while away the afternoon…

Elton Barn Fishery and Retreat has loos, showers with instant hot water and a washing-up point that are kept in tip-top condition by the helpful site staff. There's also a kids' play area where the wee ones can zoom about and burn off any excess energy. Weather permitting, this family-oriented site also likes to set up outdoor games like giant jenga, badminton and swingball.

Elton Barn Fishery and Retreat is a barbecue-friendly site (just make sure all the hot stuff doesn't singe the ground). Whatton (10 minutes' walk) and Aslockton (20 minutes) are on hand should you fancy an evening out at the pub (the villages also share a handy railway station and post office).

Elton barn fishery was a lovely place to stay, the staff was so lovely and welcoming, and took such pride in the retreat! We ended up traveling home during our first night to wash sleeping bags as the children had night time accidents and when the owner found out she was saying she would have washed them for us! We have 2 young daughters and they had lots of fun running about playing games, fishing and just generally being outdoors, they enjoyed the small play area. My partner enjoyed the fishing. We have already booked for a stay next month!

    Disliked:

The play area I can imagine would be on the small side if was catering for a larger amount of Children, but when we went it was only our 2 on there. But was enough to keep them entertained :)

Facilities were limited at times. I think more toilets are needed for the weekends when the site is busier.

The campsite was so clean and well kept. The toilets, showers and dishwashing facilities very clean and modern. The site surrounds a beautiful lake. More importantly, the campsite owners were so friendly and welcoming. They went the extra mile to accommodate us and ensure we were well looked after. One of the best sites we’ve been to, would recommend and will definitely be going back as soon as possible. A great stay!

Really lovely site with a nice view of the lake. Very clean and nice individual toilet/shower rooms. Would definitely stay again.

    Disliked:

Only reason it lost a star was because the road was quite busy and noisy. The farmer also started working noisy machinery about 6am.

Local attractions

Elton Barn Fishery and Retreat is a well-connected spot indeed – the site is just off the A52, so jaunts to Newark (20 minutes' drive) or Nottingham (25 minutes) are a real doddle. Days out to the cathedral city of Lincoln (40 minutes) are also fully feasible.

Dipped your toe in aquatic adventure and eager for more? Whatever it is you fancy, the National Water Sports Centre (20 minutes) will probably have it covered – whitewater rafting, kayaking and something called lagoon wipeout can all be tried out here. Head to Holme Pierrepont Country Park next door for land-based action including segways, miniature golf, high ropes and a climbing wall. More sedate but equally special open-air times are to be had at Nottingham's Wollaton Park (30 minutes), where you can join the deer that wander the grounds of this former country estate.

Right, that's water and land covered – now for the skies. Elton Barn Fishery and Retreat is half an hour from the National Space Centre, home to spacesuits, full-sized rockets and 360-degree planetarium shows. Newark Air Museum (20 minutes) has upwards of 70 impressive aircraft on display (aspiring captains also have the chance to sit in the cockpit).

Must see

  • The Lace Market Centre (10.9 miles)
