Elton Barn Fishery and Retreat: Green and grassy views

General

  • Family-run lakeside site with direct access to the A52
  • A 20-minute drive from Newark; 25 minutes from central Nottingham
  • Well-stocked fishing lake with several species

Whether you're an angling fan or not, after a night at Elton Barn Fishery and Retreat you may very well wake up and realise that you're hooked on these fab lakeside views.

This family-run site is an all-round wildlife haven: badgers, foxes, rabbits, geese, ducks and moorhens can regularly be spotted on or around the water's surface, while carp, tench, roach, rudd, chub and catfish prowl the depths beneath.

There are also plenty of trees around (sunset vistas over the one-acre lake are particularly splendid when viewed against a backdrop of weeping willows). The main field has even and well-kept grass and makes another pleasant spot to while away the afternoon…

Elton Barn Fishery and Retreat has loos, showers with instant hot water and a washing-up point that are kept in tip-top condition by the helpful site staff. Weather permitting, this family-oriented site also likes to set up outdoor games like giant jenga, badminton and swingball.

Elton Barn Fishery and Retreat is a barbecue-friendly site (just make sure all the hot stuff doesn't singe the ground). Whatton (10 minutes' walk) and Aslockton (20 minutes) are on hand should you fancy an evening out at the pub (the villages also share a handy railway station and post office).

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Fishing must be booked in advance: select the extra "Fishing peg" extra to reserve and pay for a peg.

Lovely open field. No one else was there so we could choose anywhere to pitch.
The showers and toilets were really clean and lots of hot water.
Non ehu but plugs available for use next to a communal fridge. Friendly staff. Small play area but my 4 year old loved it. Great value for money.
I had forgotten fairy liquid but they had some already at the washing up post.
It is a family friendly spot so they say quiet after 10pm (however as the only tent there we didn't have to test this).

    Disliked:

Not much they can do about it but very close to the main road so could hear the traffic. (It did die down between 11pm &5am)

The park was clean and brand new for the kids to play on and there was plenty of field space for them to ride their bikes! The option to pitch up near your group was great and the little meet and greet by sammy the Cat was thoroughly enjoyed by us all!

    Disliked:

Would definitely prefer to park vehicles near your pitch to extend the privacy a little bit as the car park was full of fishermen doing a late fishing experience.

From the manager...

sammy camp cat, just loves the visitors so glad you enjoyed his company....we dont allow cars on the lawn for safety reasons, we are not a massive site as you know and feel campers safety is far more important, children are all over the lawn playing and do not always see potential dangers and to have cars on the lawn would spoil the view and ambiance, this is why we dont allow it other than to unload and load. unfortuantely people do not park their cars in a very user friendly manner on occassions and this caused the car park to be congested unecessarily. Hope it didnt distract you from enjoying your stay. Thank you for leaving no trace of your stay on the lawn.xx

Local attractions

Elton Barn Fishery and Retreat is a well-connected spot indeed – the site is just off the A52, so jaunts to Newark (20 minutes' drive) or Nottingham (25 minutes) are a real doddle. Days out to the cathedral city of Lincoln (40 minutes) are also fully feasible.

Dipped your toe in aquatic adventure and eager for more? Whatever it is you fancy, the National Water Sports Centre (20 minutes) will probably have it covered – whitewater rafting, kayaking and something called lagoon wipeout can all be tried out here. Head to Holme Pierrepont Country Park next door for land-based action including segways, miniature golf, high ropes and a climbing wall. More sedate but equally special open-air times are to be had at Nottingham's Wollaton Park (30 minutes), where you can join the deer that wander the grounds of this former country estate.

Right, that's water and land covered – now for the skies. Elton Barn Fishery and Retreat is half an hour from the National Space Centre, home to spacesuits, full-sized rockets and 360-degree planetarium shows. Newark Air Museum (20 minutes) has upwards of 70 impressive aircraft on display (aspiring captains also have the chance to sit in the cockpit).

Must see

  • Belvoir Castle (8.4 kilometres)
  • The Lace Market Centre (17.6 kilometres)
  • Belton House (17.7 kilometres)
