Easy access to the A52

General

  • Family-run lakeside site with direct access to the A52
  • A 20-minute drive from Newark; 25 minutes from central Nottingham
  • Well-stocked fishing lake with several species; kids' play area

Whether you're an angling fan or not, after a night at Elton Barn Fishery and Retreat you may very well wake up and realise that you're hooked on these fab lakeside views.

This family-run site is an all-round wildlife haven: badgers, foxes, rabbits, geese, ducks and moorhens can regularly be spotted on or around the water's surface, while carp, tench, roach, rudd, chub and catfish prowl the depths beneath.

There are also plenty of trees around (sunset vistas over the one-acre lake are particularly splendid when viewed against a backdrop of weeping willows). The main field has even and well-kept grass and makes another pleasant spot to while away the afternoon…

Elton Barn Fishery and Retreat has loos, showers with instant hot water and a washing-up point that are kept in tip-top condition by the helpful site staff. There's also a kids' play area where the wee ones can zoom about and burn off any excess energy. Weather permitting, this family-oriented site also likes to set up outdoor games like giant jenga, badminton and swingball.

Elton Barn Fishery and Retreat is a barbecue-friendly site (just make sure all the hot stuff doesn't singe the ground). Whatton (10 minutes' walk) and Aslockton (20 minutes) are on hand should you fancy an evening out at the pub (the villages also share a handy railway station and post office).

Please note

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

From the manager...

Hopefully if you come back next year all the local attractions will also be open fully, so many things to do and see in a very short drive away. Bit restricted this year sadly.

Friendly welcome, not crowded and good quality facilities.

I came with my toddler niece and had such a great time. The play area did a good job at tiring the little one out and the fishing lake and surrounding landscape made this a great camping spot.

Facilities included proper showers and toilets and access to clean, running water.

Thanks for a great time and we look forward to returning in the future.

Not anything to do with the campsite or owners, but the traffic on the main road was a bit busier and louder than we had hoped.

    Everything
We have just stayed on this site for the weekend after finding it on pitchup.com. I can honestly say we have had one of the best camping trips we have ever had. It's the first time we have booked a non electric pitch and we're a little apprehensive, however it turned out to be a weekend of relaxing unplugged from social media and phones. Our two children happily played in the playground and could just let off steam. As cars are parked in the car park there was no worry of cars driving to and from the pitch. You can pretty much pitch where you like so plenty of room and space between tents. The toilets were kept immaculately clean as were the washing up area. Showers were powerful and hot, the family who own the site can be seen regularly cleaning everything. There was even a fridge freezer to use which was also kept really clean and handy for milk etc. The site was so quiet and peaceful despite a few people there as you are asked to be quiet after 10pm, so was perfect for us as we are a family with young children. We could sit and have a cuppa looking over the pond, which also had a lovely walk around it too. We saw a few reviews about traffic noise, but honestly you don't even notice it.

    Disliked:

    There was nothing to dislike.

From the manager...

Thanks Kirsty, be happy to see you all come back.x

Local attractions

Elton Barn Fishery and Retreat is a well-connected spot indeed – the site is just off the A52, so jaunts to Newark (20 minutes' drive) or Nottingham (25 minutes) are a real doddle. Days out to the cathedral city of Lincoln (40 minutes) are also fully feasible.

Dipped your toe in aquatic adventure and eager for more? Whatever it is you fancy, the National Water Sports Centre (20 minutes) will probably have it covered – whitewater rafting, kayaking and something called lagoon wipeout can all be tried out here. Head to Holme Pierrepont Country Park next door for land-based action including segways, miniature golf, high ropes and a climbing wall. More sedate but equally special open-air times are to be had at Nottingham's Wollaton Park (30 minutes), where you can join the deer that wander the grounds of this former country estate.

Right, that's water and land covered – now for the skies. Elton Barn Fishery and Retreat is half an hour from the National Space Centre, home to spacesuits, full-sized rockets and 360-degree planetarium shows. Newark Air Museum (20 minutes) has upwards of 70 impressive aircraft on display (aspiring captains also have the chance to sit in the cockpit).

Must see

  • Belvoir Castle (8.4 kilometers)
  • The Lace Market Centre (17.6 kilometers)
  • Belton House (17.7 kilometers)

National Trust

  • The Workhouse, Southwell (16.1 kilometers)
  • Grantham House (16.5 kilometers)
