Midshires Way Campsite and Alpaca Farm: Cabin exterior

General

  • Luxury glamping site by the Midshires Way a mile from East Leake
  • A 25-minute drive from Nottingham; 45 minutes from Rutland Water
  • Adults-only site a mile from East Leake; pub 15 minutes' walk away

As the name suggests, Midshires Way Campsite and Alpaca Farm is right off the popular Midshires Way footpath, a long-distance trail that runs all the way from the Chiltern Hills up to Stockport at its northern end.

And this splendid south Nottinghamshire location also delivers on the animal inhabitants advertised – they've got alpacas here, and what a fantastically fluffy bunch they are. You won't find any kids cooing over them, though, as this is an adults-only setup that thrives on rural peace and quiet.

Dogs, however, are permitted on site, and treated to their own exercise area where they can run about and make new friends. Facilities for the humans include smart heated toilet and shower facilities, plus a laundry area and free wifi across the site.

Of an evening, the barbecue area is the place to be in the evening for sipping drinks at sunset or cooking dinner over coals. If you’d rather someone else did the cooking or provided the pints, there are plenty of places to pick up meals and drinks in East Leake, a village less than a mile away from the farm.

When not out roaming, guests might like to play golf, ride the local steam train, go fishing, try their luck at the races or get behind the wheel of a supercar – all opportunities that can be reached within a half-hour drive. There are plenty of footpaths and bridleways around too for walkers who don't fancy the long-distance effort.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

The laundry facilities are currently closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Shower block was lovely, kept very clean

Large pitches, dedicated water tap for each pitch was very convenient, lovely and quiet and paying a visit to the alpacas in the morning was lovely.

A few reviews mentioned the proximity to the airport, but I personally enjoyed watching the planes from below and it didn't affect my sleep at all.

Site owners were lovely and saw them around and regular cleaning/maintenance taking place.

    Disliked:

The only downside was the toilets and showers being in their own enclosed cubicle - it's good, but you'd sometimes be waiting 20-30 minutes for someone to shower when you only wanted to nip to the loo quickly.

I'd also missed that there were no washing up facilities which was a bit of a pain in the tent, but that was my fault for not noticing and was happy to make do as the site was lovely.

Lovely views of countryside, alpacas and horses. If you want a nice quiet break and lots of good walks this is the place. Unfortunately we decided to leave the night before as high winds were forecast, but we will definitely be back later in the year. We came home feeling thoroughly refreshed. Fabulous site

    Disliked:

    Okay so

First of all the toilet and shower block weren’t open. As we were only staying for a couple of days we weren’t too fussed about the shower however I don’t understand how they can run a business in the middle of nowhere without toilets opened. Luckily the owners had a secret alternative for us although they appeared that it was a huge nuisance for the other people staying despite everyone else having caravans and camper vans which have toilets in them. Also despite the alternative option the owners weren’t very friendly and seemed very stand off ish. They definitely need to work on their hospitality and people skills.

Also on the website it is not advertised that this is Near East Midlands airport. At night every half an hour or so the planes would fly over low and loud which made it very difficult to sleep there.

Another thing on the website they had advertised all these local things you can do however when you look them up in google they are all quite far despite being advertised as less than two miles away. I think their website needs updating.

Despite the lovely views of the farm and the alpacas we probably won’t be coming back. It’s too noisy and we didn’t feel very welcomed.

From the manager...

Well, how unappreciative of you, we gave up our personal toilet and shower facilities so that you could continue with your stay at our campsite. It states quite clearly on our website that the toilet and shower facilities are closed until 17th May in line with government covid guidelines, but clearly you missed it, so we will look into that message on our website to see if we can make it clearer. During your stay we had several friendly chats with you both and discovered that you were going Alpaca walking at a nearby farm attraction 1.4 miles away, it must have been very disappointing to learn they were fully booked. We are pleased that you enjoyed the views and the onsite Alpacas, however, we are sorry that your experience with us did not fulfil your expectations and we are disappointed that having gone the extra mile for you, your first experience at camping was a disappointment. We wish you happy camping adventures in the future.

What a fantastic Pod - Really lovely, it had everything we needed and it was very well maintained and laid out. A fantastic place to stay and relax. Parking very close - a lovely set of walks and the surrounding countryside is very accessable. A short walk from a mainline station and a small village - where (We live in the city) everyone said hello! It was lovely to stay in the pod and walk into the village for food and general fitness.

We stay in Pods alot and this is by far the best Pod we have stayed in - highly recommended.

This place was fab, it was a birthday present for my husband and this was right up his street. Brendan and Amanda were fab, their customer service was excellent. As soon as we arrived at the Campsite, Amanda had come out to greet us and told us what is what. I had purchased some fire coal for the fire pit, as the weather was was raining and was dull, however Brendan did refund us on this.

The place was cosy, you are able to access and log into Netflix, Amazon Prime and any other stream of channels you may watch. This was great for us, as we wanted a chilled out weekend especially it being dull and wet all the way through.

Also main feature was the Alpaca's and horses were the main attraction and the views were amazing.

I liked the fact it was Covid Safe, as they Bio-fog their glamping cabins after every stay. Over all, i would recommend this to stay to all, and would visit it again.

Local attractions

Close to base, you can ride the steam-powered Great Central Railway (15 minutes' drive); amble towards East Leake and watch the trains puffing through if you only fancy a glimpse. Other local activities of note include spots such as Rushcliffe Golf Course (five minutes), Lakeside Sporting fishing lakes (15 minutes) and Prestwold (10 minutes), where you can get behind the wheel of a turbo-charged car.

Visit more motorsport spots, starting with nearby Donington Park Circuit (20 minutes), or try some old-school, four-legged racing at Nottingham's racecourse instead. When the heat of the action's worn off, consider taking a trip to the John Taylor & Co bell foundry, the biggest such site in the world.

If campanology doesn't quite chime in with your idea of a dream break, perhaps you'll be taken by alternative heritage sites like Calke Abbey (half an hour) or Belvoir Castle (40 minutes), where the architecture and formal gardens are as good as certain to pass muster with history buffs. Rutland Water (45 minutes) is another promising destination if you're minded to get up to walks, bike rides, birdspotting or watersports in a thoroughly natural setting
