  • Deep in the Nottinghamshire countryside near Sherwood Forest
  • Surrounded by fields and a wild garden
  • Fresh produce, chutneys and jams for sale
Liza and Andy have set all up very much oak-ay at Little Oak Campsite deep in the Nottinghamshire countryside near Robin Hood land and Sherwood Forest – sites run by campers are always very much an oak-ay thing. It's a small and back to basics site, that feels peaceful and secluded despite not being far from civilisation. Little Oak is near the north Nottinghamshire market town of Retford and is surrounded by fields and a handsome wild garden – just the place for a bit of hide and seek, football or general running around...? This is a cosy place for couples too on quieter weekends, and is a good stopover spot for journeys north or south or vice versa as it's only three miles from the A1. Other most welcome little touches are the seasonal produce on sale from the Little Oak vegetable patch as well as homemade chutneys and jams from the site fruit trees. There's also a lovely park pond packed with little fish and wildlife (please take care to monitor small campers around the pond). Little Oak has a newly renovated shower and toilet block for guests' use, but there's no electricity on the field. Campfires and barbecues are allowed and a gastropub serving food at reasonable prices is a short walk away.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked It was a great little campsite with lots of trees. We were able to set up in a sheltered spot. Toilets were easy to get to and clean. We loved having the campfire pitches and toasted marshmallows. Only 15 minutes from Sundown. The kids loved running around.

The Annexe non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Really lovely site. Lots of trees and cosy corners to camp in. Really friendly hosts/staff. Nice clean toilets/showers.

Disliked Washing up area needs a cover or something. Bird poop in sink and on draining board was a bit off putting and let a lovely site down.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Liked the campsite, pretty trees flat grass etc. Nice to see plenty of opportunities for proper fire for cooking. Lots of wild life, and quiet. Allowed me to park my motor bike by tent. Negative wash facilities a little primitive but not let that put you off. Very good we will be back.

I'd go back 100%! but not in winter if showers aren't heated/improved.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Beautiful tree surrounded camp spot, friendly host, lovely area, relaxed vibes.

Disliked 2 showers, 1 broken lock so only 1 usable for privacy, water only just reached luke warm at best, hard to stay in shower to wash. No hand drying facilities for toilets.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The host was lovely and helpful. Clean surroundings. Quiet campers on site

Disliked Did not feel secluded. Blocks of houses in line of site, small campsite meant privacy was hard to come by. Nearby train tracks and road meant non-nature noises throughout the day. Felt like we were camping in someone's back garden. Fine for some but not what we were looking for

Local attractions

Several walks start straight from the site, or you could see the forest from high up with a swing in the trees at Go Ape. Adventurous/energetic walkers can tramp the Peak District just over an hour away or critique Ice Age rock art at Creswell Crags. Elsewhere, history fans have three castles (Lincoln, Bolsover and Conisbrough) to visit and grand stately homes and parks to roam such as Rufford Abbey, Harwick Hall and Lord Byron's ancestral home Newstead Abbey. Chatsworth, setting for the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, is just over an hour away. City slickers at Little Oak Campsite can take their pick from trains to Lincoln, York and Sheffield and Doncaster. All have much to offer, but quick recommendations include Lincoln's castle and cathedral (which has a copy of the Magna Carta, democracy fans); York for the Jorvik Viking Centre, York Dungeons, the Railway Museum and the Chocolate Story, and Sheffield for its gardens and art gallery. Kids have Captain Jack's soft play and the Sundown theme park (for under 10s) to trot along to, or the Wetlands' animal park to feed animals like llamas, deer and wallabies. Or have wheely good fun at the Wheelgate all-weather adventure park which has a new waterpark among its many things to do. Looking for something a bit more old-fashioned? Pick your own fruit just down the road from the campsite.
