General

  • Deep in the Nottinghamshire countryside near Sherwood Forest
  • Surrounded by fields and a wild garden
  • Fresh produce, chutneys and jams for sale

Liza and Andy have set all up very much oak-ay at Little Oak Campsite deep in the Nottinghamshire countryside near Robin Hood land and Sherwood Forest – campsites run by campers are always very much an oak-ay thing. It's a small and back to basics site, that feels peaceful and secluded despite not being far from civilization.

Little Oak is near the north Nottinghamshire market town of Retford and is surrounded by fields and a handsome wild garden – just the place for a bit of hide and seek, football or general running around, we think...? This is a cosy place for couples too on quieter weekends, and is a good stopover spot for journeys north or south or vice versa as it's only three miles from the A1.

Other most welcome little touches are the seasonal produce on sale from the Little Oak vegetable patch as well as homemade chutneys and jams from the site fruit trees; free wifi throughout and the park pond with resident moorhen (small campers must be monitored around the pond, especially if Ms Moorhen has any chicks).

Guests are welcome to have a look at the park beehive: just please be respectful of the bees' space as they're very handy pollinators who help Liza and Andy grow heaps of fruit and veg; always look at the hive from the side and from a reasonable distance.

Little Oak has a shower and toilet block for guests' use, newly added in 2017. Campfires and barbecues are allowed and a gastropub serving food at reasonable prices is a short walk away. No electricity is on the field but there's a socket in the loo block for guests' use.

Please note

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Great spot to explore the area. Fire pit and space excellent. 13/08/2017

Campsite only had a few other visitors so my children enjoyed the space especially the tree swing. The shower and toilet area was new and worked well. Had lots of space to pitch. Fire pit was fantastic. Children learnt to build and light the fire themselves.

    Disliked:

Paying £5 for wood and getting a bit of DIY waste thrown in. All logs would be preferable. Noise from local traffic in evening - motorcycles on the main road (wouldn't bother many as it is a good distance away from site). Site could have done with a bit of litter picking.

Very chilled out and welcoming site. Owner was so relaxed and the site is simple, quiet, we'll kept and lovely. Dog friendly and the tree swing was a big hit with the kids. Showers are free (no scratching around for a 20 pence or clock watching), and facilities super clean. Flat pitches and not a "rules!" sign in sight. Just rock up, pitch where you like, light a fire and chill.

    Disliked:

It's a little bit pricey for the simplicity of the site. Clean and very well kept facilities but small (two roilets with a small sinkneach) and could be queues if the site got busy. Also, no hot water or covered area for pot washing (if raining). No big deal, but compared to similar priced sites it might be fair to expect a bit of 'luxury'.

Only 2 toilets which is the only place to brush teeth etc which means the people queuing outside are waiting longer than ever
Nothing to dry hands on when visiting the loo ( even the most basic of pubs provide this )
Only cold water to wash pots and the one and only sink there was never cleaned the whole weekend . ( perhaps some kind of washable draining board there would be very useful )
Toilets/ showers only cleaned once a day which meant they were very muddy
( maybe a mop and bucket would be helpful so we can keep the showers tidy )
The path to the toilet/ showers is an accident waiting to happen .

The price - £20 per night for such basic facilities .

Great welcome by the owners Andy and Liza. Nice quite family run site. Not the rush and bustle of some of the more commercial sites. Clean toilets and hot showers. Level pitches with good drainage. Fire pits if you want them. A great stay every time i've been.

From the manager...

Thanks for your comments, we were not aware of the noise, even with our windows open, but we realise noise travels differently through a site.
We will change our procedures to add a note to ask guests to be considerate of others when we email them with a cut of time of 11 pm and we will check the site at about 11 to make sure things have quietened down.

I've been to this campsite before and the only downside was the lack if the showers. Now that has been improved and there is a new shower, toilet and even washing up facilities so now it's difficult to think of anything this campsite is missing.

Beautiful, peaceful, friendly owners, good pubs, fire pits, walks! 09/10/2016

We stayed in the new Gypsy style caravan for 2 nights which was very clean and well equipped with everything we needed - from pots and pans to baby wipes, tea, coffee, bedding, stove and even a dog bed and dog treats! We had a large fire pit and purchased a couple of barrows of firewood. The settings was beautiful and we really enjoyed toasting marsh mallows (also provided if you want them) by the fire. Our dogs were allowed to roam free as long as they behaved and there were no restrictions on ball games meaning the kids could play happily in the field.

The owners were friendly, helpful and keen to learn how they could improve our experience.

The only down side is that there are no showers...yet! But the owners are converting one of the buildings into a shower block this winter so don't let that put you off at all. I would gladly go back, even without showers. It has so much going for it, that was no real hardship.

A little gem of a site. Enjoy!

It was our first camping experience as a couple and we were really happy. The site is a very clean and nice smaller size with fire pits you can camp by (they offer free marshmallows too). It was wet for most of our stay but the drainage was really good so we didn't get flooded, the field wasn't too swampy either. The owners sell chutneys which I thought was a nice touch. There is an outdoor sink (hose pipe round the fence!) cold water but it'll do for camping pots. The sites not too far from civilisation which was comforting as a first timer!

    Disliked:

There is only one loo and wash basin but we knew that when we booked. I never had to queue to use it and it was well stocked and clean. We were only showed the toilet on arrival so didn't know about using the sink and where to turn the hose on until the second day (I learned by watching a man fill water buckets) but to be fair we weren't shown around by the owners. There is some minor occasional plane and train noise but to be honest I didn't really notice it was my other half that did.

Directions

From the south: take the A638 off the A1 to Retford and after 3 miles as you come into town go towards the centre of town over the first and second roundabouts then over the railway bridge. Take the first turn on the right, where there is a letterbox on the corner; this is Grove Coach Road. The major road turns right becoming Cavendish Road but you continue straight on, on the very minor road marked "restricted byway" until you get to a T-junction where you turn right. We are the first place you can see, on the right-hand side.

From the north: take the A1 to Blyth then take the A634 to Retford and after about 5 miles you come into the town. Turn left at the major roundabout (just after the hospital on your right) onto the ring-road. Following signs to the A1 you will pass Morrison's, where you need to turn right, cross a few sets of traffic lights and then turn left onto the London Road heading south out of town. Grove Coach Road is half a mile along the London Road, after a pedestrian crossing and has a letter box on the corner. The major road turns right becoming Cavendish Road but you continue straight on, on the very minor road marked "restricted byway" until you get to a T-junction where you turn right. We are the first place you can see, on the right-hand side.

By train: Retford has excellent train links due to it being on the East Coast Main Line. Lincoln and York are both 35 minutes away while London, Durham and Hull are all about 90 minutes away. Newcastle is 105 minutes away, Edinburgh 195 minutes away, Sheffield 45 minutes away, and Doncaster 15 minutes away. We will usually be able to pick people up from the station if you arrange this in advance. It is a 20 minute walk at Andy's pace (or 30 minutes at Liza's) from the station to the campsite.

Local attractions

Several walks start straight from the site, or you could see the forest from high up with a swing in the trees at Go Ape. Adventurous/energetic walkers can tramp the Peak District just over an hour away or critique Ice Age rock art at Creswell Crags.

Elsewhere, history fans have three castles (Lincoln, Bolsover and Conisbrough) to visit and grand stately homes and parks to roam such as Rufford Abbey, Harwick Hall and Lord Byron's ancestral home Newstead Abbey. Chatsworth, setting for the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and the film The Duchess, is just over an hour away.

City slickers at Little Oak Campsite can take their pick from trains to Lincoln, York and Sheffield and Doncaster. We could – and have – waxed lyrical about these at great length, but will quickly recommend Lincoln's castle and cathedral (which has a copy of the Magna Carta, democracy fans); York for the Jorvik Viking Centre, York Dungeons, the Railway Museum and the Chocolate Story, and Sheffield for its gardens and art gallery. Nottingham is about an hour's drive away.

Kids have Captain Jack's soft play and the Sundown theme park (for under 10s) to trot along to, or the Wetlands' animal park to feed animals like llamas, deer and wallabies. Or have wheely good fun at the Wheelgate all-weather adventure park which has a new waterpark among its many things to do. Looking for something a bit more old-fashioned? Pick your own fruit just down the road from the campsite.

Feeling sporty? Try Doncaster Race Course, Trent Bridge cricket ground and, right next door, the Nottingham Forest and Notts County football grounds.

Finally, the active and energetic will find loads to do in the area too: ask Andy and Liza about the local fishing, clay pigeon shooting, golf, quad bikes, rock climbing, abseiling, canyoning, caving, go-karting, pony trekking, paintball...

Unless otherwise mentioned, all the above can be reached within 40 minutes.
