The site

General

  • Deep in the Nottinghamshire countryside near Sherwood Forest
  • Surrounded by fields and a wild garden
  • Fresh produce, chutneys and jams for sale

Liza and Andy have set all up very much oak-ay at Little Oak Campsite deep in the Nottinghamshire countryside near Robin Hood land and Sherwood Forest – sites run by campers are always very much an oak-ay thing. It's a small and back to basics site, that feels peaceful and secluded despite not being far from civilisation.

Little Oak is near the north Nottinghamshire market town of Retford and is surrounded by fields and a handsome wild garden – just the place for a bit of hide and seek, football or general running around...? This is a cosy place for couples too on quieter weekends, and is a good stopover spot for journeys north or south or vice versa as it's only three miles from the A1.

Other most welcome little touches are the seasonal produce on sale from the Little Oak vegetable patch as well as homemade chutneys and jams from the site fruit trees; free wifi throughout and the park pond (please take care to monitor small campers around the pond).

Little Oak has a shower and toilet block for guests' use, newly added in 2017. Campfires and barbecues are allowed and a gastropub serving food at reasonable prices is a short walk away. No electricity is on the field but there's a socket in the loo block for guests' use.

Please note

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

    Haven't pitched up for quite a while;
    But decided on this campsite stay;
    For the before and after of;
    Running the Robin Hood 100 mile!

    Fine Autumn weather;
    Not too hot and not too cool;
    Friendly advice on where to go;
    To get the cheapest fuel!

    Compact, clean and countryside feel;
    good price for the basics;
    And most importantly for me;
    Recovery and sleep;
    And heating up a meal!

    Choice of two spots - both quite nice and flat;
    After much indecision - I thought f*** it;
    I went for the pitch next to the fire bucket!

    For £10 per night;
    Very hard to moan;
    Added bonus on offer;
    Free socket to charge a phone!

    Made it back alive - from the 100 mile run;
    So I'm wondering if I have the right to sue?
    Or failing that perhaps;
    Cover weekend costs with the prize money won;
    For writing this review!

Nice, peaceful campsite11/09/2019

    Lovely peaceful campsite. Lots of room around our tent because everyone was nicely spread out.
    The firepits were a great idea. Have to pay for firewood and marshmallows.
    Great location to visit Sherwood Forest.
    Although it was someone's back garden we camped in, it really didn't feel like it.

    Disliked:

    Toilets could have been cleaned more often. In the evening we could hear birds screeching. Lots of birds. Apparently there's a man who lives near by and he has hundreds of birds. The noise doesn't last too long.
    No free WiFi like it says on their website. Wi-Fi is for guests staying in the clamping cabin only.

    A very warm welcome from the owners and always helpful but not intrusive.
    Lovely small site with plenty of room to spread out and enjoy camping.
    Toilet and showers were basic but kept clean with plenty of hot water.
    Washing up facilities were not undercover so might be a pain if you had a wet holiday.

    It was very quaint campsite. Was perfect for a short 2 night away break. It was a very spacious campsite. We definitely would return.

    It didn't have hot water to wash your pots in and not many wash basins. Lighting wasn't great in the evenings.

    Great quiet campsite, limited pitches in picturesque setting. Very friendly and dogs allowed so great for our wee spaniel.
    Definitely would go back. Would not suit everyone as although facilities are new only 2 toilets & 2 showers but only had to queue once in 3 days. Only cold water washing up facilities. Very local to nice forests.

    Disliked:

    Toilet block!! Although kept clean it was tiny and 1 toilet didnt work! For the size of the field id say more toilets and showers are needed. It stated online there was a child play area but there isnt. It felt like we were camping in someones garden.

Expensive for limited, unhygenic and electrically suspect facilities14/07/2019

Reviewer's country: United KingdomAnonymousConfirmed

  • Non-electric grass tent pitch

  • Liked:

    Nice, well cut, green field on arrival, at about 11.00am.

    The two showers which were larger than typical which meant that there was a dry area for dressing after the shower.

    Level pitch and some choice of pitch location.

    Disliked:

    Very noisy late at night due to barBQs and a fairly large group of three tents together.

    Dish washing facility unfit for purpose. It was filthy, had no connection to the waste pipe (= wet feet and soggy ground). No hot water. No cover resulting in pigeon muck on the draining area and leaves in the sink. It is unlikely that staff ever maintained/cleaned this facility.

    Very questionable electrical safety of the 'phone charging 'system' which consisted of a long extension lead to a standard 13A socket in the open air with only a small (inadequate) cover over the table on which it rested. When it rained, the socket got wet.

    Both toilets were small; the one on the right was so small that it was difficult to open/close the door whilst in the cubical.

    No separate wash area such that one had to brush one's teeth in the cramped toilet with nowhere except the toilet seat to put one's toiletries.

    Difficult access to the site.

    Very expensive for the facilities compared with the three other sites that we stayed on during our trip.

From the manager...

Dear Kate, thank you for your feedback. We are very sorry to hear you had this experience.
We will take a look at this and see what we can do to improve things.

Directions

From the south: take the A638 off the A1 to Retford and after 3 miles as you come into town go towards the centre of town over the first and second roundabouts then over the railway bridge. Take the first turn on the right, where there is a letterbox on the corner; this is Grove Coach Road. The major road turns right becoming Cavendish Road but you continue straight on, on the very minor road marked "restricted byway" until you get to a T-junction where you turn right. We are the first place you can see, on the right-hand side.

From the north: take the A1 to Blyth then take the A634 to Retford and after about 5 miles you come into the town. Turn left at the major roundabout (just after the hospital on your right) onto the ring-road. Following signs to the A1 you will pass Morrison's, where you need to turn right, cross a few sets of traffic lights and then turn left onto the London Road heading south out of town. Grove Coach Road is half a mile along the London Road, after a pedestrian crossing and has a letter box on the corner. The major road turns right becoming Cavendish Road but you continue straight on, on the very minor road marked "restricted byway" until you get to a T-junction where you turn right. We are the first place you can see, on the right-hand side.

By train: Retford has excellent train links due to it being on the East Coast Main Line. Lincoln and York are both 35 minutes away while London, Durham and Hull are all about 90 minutes away. Newcastle is 105 minutes away, Edinburgh 195 minutes away, Sheffield 45 minutes away, and Doncaster 15 minutes away. We will usually be able to pick people up from the station if you arrange this in advance. It is a 20 minute walk at Andy's pace (or 30 minutes at Liza's) from the station to the campsite.

Local attractions

Several walks start straight from the site, or you could see the forest from high up with a swing in the trees at Go Ape. Adventurous/energetic walkers can tramp the Peak District just over an hour away or critique Ice Age rock art at Creswell Crags.

Elsewhere, history fans have three castles (Lincoln, Bolsover and Conisbrough) to visit and grand stately homes and parks to roam such as Rufford Abbey, Harwick Hall and Lord Byron's ancestral home Newstead Abbey. Chatsworth, setting for the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and the film The Duchess, is just over an hour away.

City slickers at Little Oak Campsite can take their pick from trains to Lincoln, York and Sheffield and Doncaster. All these could be waxed lyrical about at great length, but quick recommendations include Lincoln's castle and cathedral (which has a copy of the Magna Carta, democracy fans); York for the Jorvik Viking Centre, York Dungeons, the Railway Museum and the Chocolate Story, and Sheffield for its gardens and art gallery. Nottingham is about an hour's drive away.

Kids have Captain Jack's soft play and the Sundown theme park (for under 10s) to trot along to, or the Wetlands' animal park to feed animals like llamas, deer and wallabies. Or have wheely good fun at the Wheelgate all-weather adventure park which has a new waterpark among its many things to do. Looking for something a bit more old-fashioned? Pick your own fruit just down the road from the campsite.

Feeling sporty? Try Doncaster Race Course, Trent Bridge cricket ground and, right next door, the Nottingham Forest and Notts County football grounds.

Finally, the active and energetic will find loads to do in the area too: ask Andy and Liza about the local fishing, clay pigeon shooting, golf, quad bikes, rock climbing, abseiling, canyoning, caving, go-karting, pony trekking, paintball...

Unless otherwise mentioned, all the above can be reached within 40 minutes.
