Little Oak Campsite: The site

General

  • Deep in the Nottinghamshire countryside near Sherwood Forest
  • Surrounded by fields and a wild garden
  • Fresh produce, chutneys and jams for sale

Liza and Andy have set all up very much oak-ay at Little Oak Campsite deep in the Nottinghamshire countryside near Robin Hood land and Sherwood Forest – sites run by campers are always very much an oak-ay thing. It's a small and back to basics site, that feels peaceful and secluded despite not being far from civilisation.

Little Oak is near the north Nottinghamshire market town of Retford and is surrounded by fields and a handsome wild garden – just the place for a bit of hide and seek, football or general running around...? This is a cosy place for couples too on quieter weekends, and is a good stopover spot for journeys north or south or vice versa as it's only three miles from the A1.

Other most welcome little touches are the seasonal produce on sale from the Little Oak vegetable patch as well as homemade chutneys and jams from the site fruit trees. There's also a lovely park pond packed with little fish and wildlife (please take care to monitor small campers around the pond).

Little Oak has a newly renovated shower and toilet block for guests' use, but there's no electricity on the field. Campfires and barbecues are allowed and a gastropub serving food at reasonable prices is a short walk away.

Please note

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, customers can amend their dates with the campsite/holiday park free of charge for all stays up to, and including, 12/31/2022.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

The friendly atmosphere and welcome. The caravan was really nice, and included everything we needed. They even filled the ice tray so we could have ice cubs which was a lovely touch.

Fabulous little gem of a site. Lovely friendly owners, small site and really pretty. It’s like a huge back garden with trees, shrubs and even a lovely fish pond. Pitches as big as you need them, flat which is always a bonus and ready made fire pits. Some pitches don’t have these so maybe worth having slabs available so those don’t can use there own firepit too ( maybe do have these available but we didn’t need to ask) . 2 unisex toilets and showers which were lovely and clean. Local takeaways deliver with no issues and an easy 30/40 min walk into Retford. Will definitely be coming back.

Chilled out basic camp site, feels very rural but only a few minutes drive from supermarkets and pubs. Friendly owners.

    Disliked:

Wasn't an issue but the road down to the site from the housing estate is extremely narrow, potentially a very long way to reverse if there's a car coming the other way, thankfully didn't happen!

No welcome on arrival from owners themselves Usually the owners of the campsites no matter how busy they are always take the time to introduce themselves and are friendly .Sophie was a stand in and was very helpful. Non existent shower fans should be 15 litres per second to remove steam ,this is a current Covid-19 requirement, Locks on toilet doors did not work. No space to get in and out of toilets easily , the instantaneous water heaters in both toilets were in operative , therefore no hot water to wash hands . Not enough hooks on doors for clothes although a teaspoon had been put up and made into a hook !! The warm water for washing up sink is a potential health hazard for legionnaires disease with warm standing water that leads to bacteria growth . The portalaloo was a good idea but no proper means of getting to them. Wet slippery mud slope with no light so easy to fall in ditch
Day or night. We left one day early because a large amount of cars about 10 of them all in one group pitched nearby with about 6 tents so lots of people and children. All very loud. Playing football knocking the ball to our car and knocking into the windbreak. Taking over the whole field. As well as being loud until 1-30 in the morning. The other couple also left one day early for same reason, some of these faults had been mentioned in previous comments from last year yet nothing has been done to rectify this. The owner was told about the noise on the Friday night and did go and ask them to
Quieten it down - this lasted about half an hour then they just carried on. We didn’t realise from the description that this site was actually on a housing estate and it was in somebody’s back garden. All be it a large garden and tidy but nothing like we were expecting for a rating of over 9. We are regular campers and have had up to now superb sites so have to say this was a major disappointment to us. No maps or local attractions on display so we luckily googled our trips. Saying on the edge of Sherwood Forest was little bit misleading as about 20 minutes away !!! Was risky charging phones up as had to be left outside at owners risk.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. I am very sorry you were disappointed in your stay.
We make every effort to greet our campers and you will see that most of our customers praise our friendly staff.
Unfortunately, we were unable to greet you and did not get back to the site until the early hours the next day. Then a miscommunication between my husband and myself and several unexpected mini-crisis, meant we dropped the ball this time. So we can only apologise.
We also ask all our guests to be considerate of other guests and play ball games safely and quieten down at 11. Our guests mostly respect this but having asked them to quieten down at 11, I have now instigated a policy of us checking at 11.30 that they have.
We do ask that the portaloos are not used by people staying on the main site and they only use the toilet block provided. This limits the number of people who are using each set of toilets and is part of our COVID policy.
I can only think that there must have been a power cut for the hot water and fans not to be working.
I have asked my husband to put up more hooks in the shower.
There is no danger of legionnaires disease as the hot water is a sealed unit. The site is not on a housing estate, it is situated off a private road and surrounded by trees and fields.

We were greeted on arrival and shown all facilities which was really nice. It was a lovely campsite with plenty of choices to pitch up. And was equipped with everything we could have possibly needed if not more. There was great attention to detail. It is in a great location for people looking to walk around Sherwood Forest.

Local attractions

Several walks start straight from the site, or you could see the forest from high up with a swing in the trees at Go Ape. Adventurous/energetic walkers can tramp the Peak District just over an hour away or critique Ice Age rock art at Creswell Crags.

Elsewhere, history fans have three castles (Lincoln, Bolsover and Conisbrough) to visit and grand stately homes and parks to roam such as Rufford Abbey, Harwick Hall and Lord Byron's ancestral home Newstead Abbey. Chatsworth, setting for the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, is just over an hour away.

City slickers at Little Oak Campsite can take their pick from trains to Lincoln, York and Sheffield and Doncaster. All have much to offer, but quick recommendations include Lincoln's castle and cathedral (which has a copy of the Magna Carta, democracy fans); York for the Jorvik Viking Centre, York Dungeons, the Railway Museum and the Chocolate Story, and Sheffield for its gardens and art gallery.

Kids have Captain Jack's soft play and the Sundown theme park (for under 10s) to trot along to, or the Wetlands' animal park to feed animals like llamas, deer and wallabies. Or have wheely good fun at the Wheelgate all-weather adventure park which has a new waterpark among its many things to do. Looking for something a bit more old-fashioned? Pick your own fruit just down the road from the campsite.
