  • Spacious and grassy site on the banks of the River Trent
  • Watersports centre and several theme parks a short drive away
  • Riverside walks and bike rides, boat trips and restaurants nearby
Shoot along for a stay here… you'll have enough to do in scenic surrounds to keep you occupied for aeons. Gunthorpe Camping is a small family-friendly site set on a level grassy paddock next to the River Trent, making it most handy for riverside walks and bike rides direct from the grounds, and canoeing, kayaking, fishing and boat trips all nearby. There's also the National Watersports Centre and Sundown Adventureland within 40 minutes' drive… and when you're tuckered out and back at base, several good bars and restaurants are within a short stroll. The grassy paddock is open and surrounded by hedges and mature trees, so you'll have plenty of space to spread out as well as hunker down when the mood takes you. You should have a peaceful and comfy stay here too: the grounds are well-maintained and the showers in the bright clean washrooms have plenty of hot water. Barbecues are allowed, so it's all systems go if you want to grill up an alfresco feast by the riverbank.

Liked Laid back atmosphere. No one measuring plots, complaining about noise at 9pm and harassing us to leave by 10am.

Liked The location is lovely with the river and pubs.

Disliked The toilets and shower blocks weren't cleaned while we were there. Toilet roll ran out, then was changed around midday but still didn't clean the showers. There were dead flies and midges on the sinks. Washing up facilities weren't clean. There are so many apple trees and because of the fallen apples that are rotting there were so many ants, they were crawling over our table, dog bowls and everywhere. I know that you can't get rid of ants but if a lot of the apples were cleared this may help. We only lasted the one night as couldn't relax and enjoy it. The site has so much potential to be a lot more welcoming. Nobody comes and greets you when you arrive or shows you where the facilities are, it was just a white board with your name on and pitch number. Such a shame was looking forward to a relaxing weekend but lost money instead.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, though we are sorry to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations.
To clarify a few points raised: Gunthorpe Camping operates on a convenient self-check-in basis, clearly outlined prior to arrival, with welcome whiteboards directing guests to their pitches and facilities. As an established site set within a traditional, natural orchard environment, insect activity can occasionally occur naturally outdoors. Our facilities are regularly maintained and serviced throughout the day, particularly during periods when the site is running at full capacity over busy weekends.
We appreciate your kind words regarding our lovely location near the river and local pubs, and we wish you all the best in your future travels.

Electric grass pitch

Liked I love this site. It’s surrounded by great pubs and restaurants all within a few feet of the main entrance. The river walks are all opposite and I would recommend the walk to Burton Joyce along the river and a visit to the Nelson pub with its lovely outdoor space and food. Train stations close by if you want to venture into Nottingham and Newark is a short drive away. The owners give you all the info you need upfront and then you’re pretty much left alone which we approve of.

Disliked Not really a dislike but a bit of a deep clean in the male showers and toilets wouldn't go amiss, and possibly some signs to tell other campers to clean their own mess up.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Excellent location, close to riverside walks. Good for dog walking, cycling and fishing. Close to several good pubs and cafes.
Spacious pitches with nice countryside views.
I liked the self check-in

Disliked Overflowing bins on arrival which only got worse through the week. Although there are recycling bins, they are not labelled, and because the other bins are overflowing, everything got used for general rubbish.
Toilets and showers were dirty. They were not cleaned at all during our stay. If you lift the non-slip mat in the shower it is black and slimy underneath.
The poor hygiene at the site is the reason for the low score. And it’s such a shame because this could be a really lovely site with a bit of TLC

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, we are really happy you enjoyed the location and what it has to offer.
We completely agree with your feedback regarding the bins and showers. Due to a recent road closure for resurfacing, our local bin lorry missed a collection week which impacted on a particularly busy, hot weekend when visitor numbers (due to wedding in the village) and shower usage—peaked, this unfortunately led to the bins overflowing. We have also noted your comments on the shower mats and have since removed them, as we agree they weren't the best choice for holding dirt.

Liked The location is fantastic - numerous pubs & restaurants close by, plus walks along the canal.

Disliked Sadly, we encountered a very noisy group staying on the site, playing music until midnight, with dancing and loud singing. Not what we expected from a site with strict quiet times!!
The toilet/shower facilities were also not as good as expected. Mould around the very small sinks and mould and dirt in the showers. On arrival 2 out of the 3 toilet cubicles in the ladies' had no toilet roll. This was eventually replaced however I couldn't see any signs of a good clean. The state of the bathrooms remained unchanged by the time we left.
We found the bins were overflowing and the area around looking very shabby and uninviting. We also saw some cleaning chemicals stored outside in an area open to everyone including children. Should these perhaps be in a locked shed to ensure the safety of all?
In summary, very disappointing which is such a shame as this site has such great potential. So sadly, we will not be returning.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. We are genuinely sorry your stay fell well short of our standards.
This was a complete one-off for us—we have never experienced an issue like this before, but being caught out by our busiest weekend of the season led to unacceptable lapses in cleanliness and waste management. You certainly aren't the only ones to bring this to our attention, and it is clear that some of our guests this weekend were entirely disrespectful of the site and others around them.
To ensure this never happens again and to protect our usual peaceful atmosphere, we have already updated our weekend policy to remove one-night bookings.
We completely understand your frustration and appreciate you taking the time to share your experience.
Best wishes

Local attractions

Despite the industrial past and present, Nottinghamshire has many fab natural landscapes: the wetlands at Skylarks Nature Reserve, a 20-minute drive from the site are as rich with feathered life as any you'll see on TV nature channels. For more adventurous hours, there's go-karting 15 minutes' drive away in Netherfield, and a massive array of high octane stuff (not all of it watery) at the National Watersports Centre (20 minutes' drive) including Segway rides, high ropes, wakeboarding and rafting. Then there's Sherwood Forest and Sherwood Forest Pines Park 40 minutes away… a leafy combination of legend, history, nature reserve, country park and adventure centre, with hiking and biking trails through 450 acres of ancient oaks and wildlife. Adventureseekers can see it from the treetops on ropes and wires at Go Ape, and the kids can clamber about at the award-winning natural play area Robin Hood’s Hideout. For family antics out of the forest, Sundown Adventureland (40 minutes) has rides and themed playgrounds for the under-10s; Twinlakes Park offers birds of prey shows and creepy critters along with its waterpark and rollercoaster rides, and for the real big-ride fanatics, it's an hour and a half to Alton Towers. It's half an hour to Nottingham for tours of the castle and the caves, stopping for snifters in Ye Trip To Jerusalem and ice skating at Motorpoint Arena. You could also hire bikes for a trip through Colwick Country Park (20 minutes' drive), a pleasant combo of woodlands, lakes, meadows and playgrounds where you can swim, fish, walk, sail and spot wildlife.
