  • Spacious and grassy site on the banks of the River Trent
  • Watersports centre and several theme parks a short drive away
  • Riverside walks and bike rides, boat trips and restaurants nearby
Shoot along for a stay here… you'll have enough to do in scenic surrounds to keep you occupied for aeons. Gunthorpe Camping is a small family-friendly site set on a level grassy paddock next to the River Trent, making it most handy for riverside walks and bike rides direct from the grounds, and canoeing, kayaking, fishing and boat trips all nearby. There's also the National Watersports Centre and Sundown Adventureland within 40 minutes' drive… and when you're tuckered out and back at base, several good bars and restaurants are within a short stroll. The grassy paddock is open and surrounded by hedges and mature trees, so you'll have plenty of space to spread out as well as hunker down when the mood takes you. You should have a peaceful and comfy stay here too: the grounds are well-maintained and the showers in the bright clean washrooms have plenty of hot water. Barbecues are allowed, so it's all systems go if you want to grill up an alfresco feast by the riverbank.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Location

Disliked: Very basic facilities - Large site - intermittent hot water so washing up was difficult without boiled water from kettle to boost temp, No contact with owners (how convenient) Price high considering the basic nature of the facilities.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: It was a very quiet camping site and very rustic looking but well equipped for our needs. Very clean toliet and shower block which had been refurbished recently. Pubs and restaurants within a very short walk away. We will definitely be coming back.

Disliked: Only little problem was there was no lighting to the pitches, but problem solved with a torch.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The campsite is in a lovely quiet spot, right by the river Trent and easy to find next to Unicorn Hotel which is good for a pub lunch or dinner. We wished we had bought our bikes as there are several villages/small towns within easy cycle distance on proper cycle paths.

The campsite was simple yet effective, all grass pitches and level ground. Plenty of space between pitches and the shower/toilet block was modern and clean.

There are some resident Chickens, the most beautiful Ducks and funny Guineafowl. Cows also wander through the fields behind!

Disliked: Not the fault of the campsite owners but another trip marred somewhat by barking dogs.

We went to pitch up in a sheltered spot as it was a particularly windy day but we swiftly moved as far away as possible from the yapping dog.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Nice site, good clean facilities.
Fabulous location, near to a pub and riverside walks.
Quiet location and secure.
Good communication with site prior to arrival.

Disliked: We were told our name & pitch number would be on a board by the entrance. ( I had booked two pitches together for family get together) On arriving neither names were on the board, but only three free spaces but none together.
So I rang the number given, I'm still waiting to be phoned back.
I spoke to another couple who were camping who had had the same issue the day before, and they'd just picked an empty slot.
So we picked an empty pitch and parked our motorhome and put a single tent up on the same pitch as we wanted to be together.
Slightly annoying that we'd paid £40 each for Two pitches though.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Enjoyed our first family camping trip. Chose this site for our first trip to test the waters and see if we like it. We quickly found that the hosts were extremely helpful and answered the phone and came to see us regarding a query. Which is great to see.
After this trip we have decided that we, as a family enjoy camping. And plan to do much much more.

Disliked: Not really a dislike, as we knew what was at the camp site when we booked. But the place does warrant room for a park of some sort for kids.
However, we are a family who enjoys walks with the dog, and this location offers amazing walks along the river Trent.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Campsite was lovely and owner was lovely.

Disliked: The people on the campsite was not really child friendly. A few comments were made regarding the children just doing children things. I felt like my whole camping experience was ruined trying to get my excited children to be quiet. I would recommend to a friend as I feel that it was just the people that ruined our experience.

Local attractions

Despite the industrial past and present, Nottinghamshire has many fab natural landscapes: the wetlands at Skylarks Nature Reserve, a 20-minute drive from the site are as rich with feathered life as any you'll see on TV nature channels. For more adventurous hours, there's go-karting 15 minutes' drive away in Netherfield, and a massive array of high octane stuff (not all of it watery) at the National Watersports Centre (20 minutes' drive) including Segway rides, high ropes, wakeboarding and rafting. Then there's Sherwood Forest and Sherwood Forest Pines Park 40 minutes away… a leafy combination of legend, history, nature reserve, country park and adventure centre, with hiking and biking trails through 450 acres of ancient oaks and wildlife. Adventureseekers can see it from the treetops on ropes and wires at Go Ape, and the kids can clamber about at the award-winning natural play area Robin Hood’s Hideout. For family antics out of the forest, Sundown Adventureland (40 minutes) has rides and themed playgrounds for the under-10s; Twinlakes Park offers birds of prey shows and creepy critters along with its waterpark and rollercoaster rides, and for the real big-ride fanatics, it's an hour and a half to Alton Towers. It's half an hour to Nottingham for tours of the castle and the caves, stopping for snifters in Ye Trip To Jerusalem and ice skating at Motorpoint Arena. You could also hire bikes for a trip through Colwick Country Park (20 minutes' drive), a pleasant combo of woodlands, lakes, meadows and playgrounds where you can swim, fish, walk, sail and spot wildlife.
