General view of the tents

General

  • Spacious and grassy site set on the banks of the River Trent
  • Watersports centre and several theme parks a short drive away
  • Riverside walks and bike rides, boat trips and restaurants nearby

Shoot along for a stay here.... you'll have enough to do in scenic surrounds to keep you occupied for aeons.

Gunthorpe Camping is a small family-friendly site set on a level grassy paddock next to the River Trent, for riverside walks and bike rides direct from the grounds, and canoeing, kayaking, fishing and boat trips all nearby. There's also the National Watersports Centre and Sundown Adventure Park within 20 minutes' drive... and when you're tuckered out and back at base, several good bars and restaurants are within a short stroll.

The grassy paddock is open and surrounded by hedges and mature trees, so you'll have plenty of space to spread out as well as bunker down when the mood takes you. You'll have a peaceful and comfy stay here too: the grounds are well-maintained and the showers in the bright clean washrooms have plenty of hot water.

Barbecues are allowed, so it's all systems go if you want to grill up an alfresco feast by the riverbank.

Great secure bell tent site near to the river with your own picnic table, 3 plug electricity outlet, kettle, double bed and 2 futon type chair to single mattress beds for the squids. So much to do around the area would have liked another couple of days. Great hosts, see less with directions, access and logs for fire if you need it. Very relaxing site with plenty of play space for the squids too.

Beautiful, peaceful, friendly site. Completely secure - fenced all round with secure gate, so perfect for the kids to run about, and also for leaving the bikes just propped up against the fence all day.
Fire pits and bbqs are encouraged, so it was lovely to sit out in the evening, and just enjoy the peace and quiet. It backs on to a field with cows in it, so a lovely view.
Out the gate and over the road is the river and a wonderful cycling/walking trail, highly recommend giving it a go.
    Showers and toilets are clean.
The bell tent had a power supply/plus sockets, kettle, camping bunk beds for the kids and a confine double bed, also fairy lights, which were handy as night lights. We had everything we needed and were very happy :-)
The owners very friendly and welcoming.

We loved the location as you have fantastic pubs, cafe, bistro restaurant on your doorstep! The fields were really peaceful and the tents were spacious & comfortable! Toilets & shower were clean, easily lit up at night and really warm! It felt like they had under floor heating.
A fantastic spot and we will definitely be coming back here again :) thank you Anthony & Lesley x

Location is private, through coded gates, with the tents in a lovely orchard overlooking fields and farmland. It was incredibly peaceful and tranquil with only the sound of birds.
Tent was ideal for the two us, although may have been a little cosy if the teenage kids were here also. A little point, remember temperature drops at night. Our fault but we could have done with a duvet instead of just sleeping bags.
Loved the provision of electricity, kettle and comfy been bags. Great that each tent had its own outside picnic table.
Toilet facilities were a work in progress however the small block was warm and clean. I have to say the shower was superb, loads of pressure and hot.
It may be on the list, as there was further development work in progress, to have washing up facilities.
Met the owner briefly and he was extremely friendly and helpful. Although I'm not sure it would always be possible we appreciated the chance to check out later given we left at 4.30am for me to do a triathlon and returned at 1.30pm. Thankyou.
Overall locations is wonderful. Outside you have the River Trent and a number of pubs and restaurants within 100m, all set in a lovely village.
The site is handily located for the National Water Sports Centre and indeed Nottingham Centre.
I can recommend the Budgens Farm Shop just down the road at Lowdham.

    Disliked:

There is nothing I can say we disliked. It would look much nicer if the section from the gate to the entrance to the orchard was tidied up a little with the removal of the old white goods.

From the manager...

Thank you, your review is much appreciated and we act on the feedback. Hope you had a successful triathlon! :-)

Local attractions

Despite the industrial past and present, Nottinghamshire has many fab natural landscapes: the wetlands at Skylarks Nature Reserve, a 20-minute drive from the site are as rich with feathered life as any you'll see on TV nature channels.

For more adventurous hours, there's go-karting 15 minutes' drive away in Netherfield, and a massive array of high octane stuff (not all of it watery) at the National Watersports Centre (20 minutes) including Segway rides, high ropes, wakeboarding and rafting.

Then there's Sherwood Forest and Sherwood Forest Pines Park 40 minutes away... a leafy combination of legend, history, nature reserve, country park and adventure centre, with hiking and biking trails through 450 acres of ancient oaks and wildlife. Adventureseekers can see it from the treetops on ropes and wires at Go Ape, and the kids can clamber about at the award-winning natural play area Robin Hood’s Hideout.

For family antics out of the forest, Sundown Adventure Park (20 minutes) has rides and themed playgrounds for the under-10s; Twinlakes Park offers birds of prey shows and creepy critters along with its waterpark and rollercoaster rides, and for the real big-ride fanatics, it's an hour and a half to Alton Towers.

It's half an hour to Nottingham for tours of the castle and the caves, stopping for snifters in Ye Trip To Jerusalem and ice skating at Motorpoint Arena. You could also hire bikes for a trip through Colwick Country Park (20 minutes' drive), a pleasant combo of woodlands, lakes, meadows and playgrounds where you can swim, fish, walk, sail and spot wildlife.

Must see

  • The Lace Market Centre (11.6 kilometres)
  • Nottingham Castle (12.2 kilometres)
  • Wollaton Hall and Park (15.9 kilometres)
