  • Riverside site in grounds of a 17th-century house in Nottinghamshire
  • Close to Sherwood Forest and 25 miles from Nottingham
  • Space for outdoor activities; rope swing and stepping stones
You'll sense the history all around you at The Old Vicarage, from the old house to the remains of the water mill in the river bed. Stays here are in the grounds of a 17th-century house in the village of Elkesley, six miles from Worksop and 25 miles from Nottingham. Its grounds run down to the banks of the Poulter river, and are lined with stands of acacia, sycamore, ash and oak trees which were originally donated to the first vicar by the Duke of Newcastle in the 1830s. There's plenty of space around the site for traditional outdoor activities, with a rope swing and stepping stones over the shallow river and a bridge that's perfect for playing Pooh Sticks. In the surrounding area there are animal parks and nature reserves to walk around, or to head back further in time, you could take one of the trails through ancient Sherwood Forest, around quarter of an hour's drive away. Every bank holiday, the site opens up their Cave Bar, a cool little space built into an exposure of 500-million-year-old sandstone, with a chillout room, TV room and games, plus an outdoor terrace for sipping drinks out in the sunshine. Other amenities include a washing-up area and bathrooms with plentiful hot showers, toilets and baby changing facilities. Barbecues are welcome on site, as long as you keep them two feet off the ground.

What customers say

This picturesque campsite is highly praised for its beautiful natural setting and shallow river, which is a hit with children. Families appreciate the relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, and ample space for children to play freely. While the facilities, particularly the toilets and showers, are frequently mentioned as needing an upgrade, and some visitors experienced issues with cleanliness and capacity during busy periods, many still found the experience enjoyable and expressed a desire to return. The cave bar and on-site activities are also noted as positive additions.

Liked An absolute find !! Friendly and welcoming when we arrived. This place is the most beautiful and picturesque site I have ever visited. A wonderful place for families to enjoy making memories. The river is just perfect to dip your toes in and great for toddlers to play in. The washing up hut has 2 fridges and a freezer. I particularly liked the swings dotted around the site especially if you have young ones you can keep them in view without having to take them to the play area. So everyone is happy. We will definitely be back. The only drawback is the shower block needs updating. The cave bar was a bonus and even showed the England match on a huge screen a few WIFI issues but was resolved.
It is a little piece of paradise and only 20 minutes from Doncaster. A perfect weekend spent with family.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Wow..... what a great little site. It was at capacity but still lots of room. No cramped pitches. Great for kids, dogs and grown ups. Yes, the loos and showers could do with an upgrade, but cleaning products were provided and I would always clean before I use.
Footy was on and they provided a tv and kept the bar open.

Disliked If I'm being critical, number 1 ladies loo door won't open if the entrance door is ajar.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely vibe in a beautiful setting where everyone on the site just enjoyed each other’s company. Staff extremely friendly!

Could maybe turn the reception area into a little shop too to avoid people leaving site to purchase things such as milk. Nice little touch having fridges and freezers available for campers to use.

Disliked Power went off at 10.30pm on our first night and it was 11am the following morning before we managed to locate a staff member to get it turned back on. Power seems a bit hit and miss on the electric pitches. This won’t however stop us returning we will just come better prepared next time.

Local attractions

The surrounding countryside has great places for walks and wildlife-spotting, with trails around the lakes and wetlands of Idle Valley Nature Reserve (15 minutes' drive) and lakes for fishing too. Then there's Sherwood Forest, 25 minutes away: some 450 acres of wildlife among ancient oak trees, alongside a wealth of biking and walking trails to take you through them. Adventure seekers can see it all from the treetops on ropes and wires at Go Ape, and the kids can clamber about at Robin Hood’s Hideout, an acclaimed natural play area. For family antics out of the forest, Sundown Adventure Park (20 minutes) has rides and themed playgrounds for the under-10s and families can also make tracks for Ferry Farm Country Park (45 minutes), to feed lambs, meet pigs and zoom about on go-karts and the adventure playground. An hour away and a major hub since Robin Hood's days, Nottingham still draws the crowds. Tour the castle and the caves, stop for a snifter in Ye Trip To Jerusalem (oldest pub in England, perhaps...), skate on ice at Motorpoint Arena and see what law and order meant in the Sheriff’s days at the National Justice Museum. For further historical wanderings, Creswell Crags presents an array of prehistoric caves in a cracking limestone gorge and Newark's castle, Air Museum and National Civil War Centre sum up the centuries very entertainingly, all around half an hour away.
