Springtime on site

General

  • Riverside site in grounds of a 17th-century house in Nottinghamshire
  • Close to Sherwood Forest and 25 miles from Nottingham
  • Bar, TV room and traditional games

Up for a spot of time travel? No machines necessary, just book a berth at The Old Vicarage, a 17th-century house in the village of Elkesley, 20 minutes' drive from Worksop and an hour from Nottingham.

Its grounds run down to the Poulter river, and are lined with stands of acacia, sycamore, ash and oak trees originally donated to the first vicar by the Duke of Newcastle in the 1830s. You'll sense the history all around you, from the old house to the remains of the water mill in the river bed.

There's ample space around the site for old-fashioned outdoor activities, with a rope swing and stepping stones over the shallow river and a bridge that's perfect for playing Pooh Sticks. In the surrounding area there are animal parks and nature reserves to walk around, or to head back further in time, you could take one of the trails through ancient Sherwood Forest, around quarter of an hour's drive away.

Guest facilities on site centre around the Car Bar, set in a 500 million-year-old sandstone cave with a chillout room, TV room and games.

Other amenities include a washing-up area and bathrooms with plentiful hot showers, toilets and baby changing facilities (please note that while the shower block has hot water, the facilities are not heated).

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Group bookings of 10 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of 15 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Bookings must not be for more than 15 consecutive nights.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

The games room is open from 19 April - 30 September.

The Cave Bar is only open 19-21 April, 3-5 May, 24-26 May and 23-25 August.

Lovely location, beautiful scenery with a stream and countryside views.
    Facilities were good!
Hosts were very friendly and helpful.

    Disliked:

Toilets could have been cleaner, the toilet building itself could do with some refurbishment, as it was raining at the time there were puddles inside!

Everything...the site was great both beautiful and equipped with everything we needed. The staff were responsive to our request for a log burner and additional logs when needed dropping them off by the tent on the back of the quad. Site appeared well run and managed by staff Great washing up facilities which were spaced out on the campsite. Loved the fact that you could own space and occupy the gazebo communal fire pits and benches on the site.

    Disliked:

We could hear the Al traffic at times, more like a dull background noise but this is not a fault of the campsite management of course.

Liked the fact that we were among the trees and near a very shallow river for the kids to play in.

    Disliked:

We only stayed one night, but I think that there is only one male shower could prove a bit inconvenient during high season with a busy campsite. Having said that, it wasn’t busy so it wasn’t a problem on this visit.

The scenery and amount of space. The stream through the middle of the pitch sites was beautiful.

There seemed to be loud music coming from nearby in the middle of the night. No fault of Old Vintage though.

  • Liked:

Beautiful surroundings. The stream was loved by the children - they were entertained for the whole two days.
I liked the fact you could pitch up where you like and tents were not forced into regimented lines.
The family that run the site seem pleasant enough. I raised an issue with the cold shower which was duly looked into, but sadly wasn't resolved.

    Disliked:

Really close to the A1 - the constant drone from the traffic was always present.
Showers were temperamental - usually cold.
Tricky to find a level pitch due to undulating grounds in some areas.
We were treated to music from an illegal rave happening in the local area one night...all night!
Owner's dogs were left to roam the site defecating wherever they liked.

We loved how peaceful the site was and really enjoyed our stay and will definitely be returning.

    Disliked:

The only down side was there was only one male and one female shower which meant a bit of a queue in the morning.

Local attractions

The surrounding countryside offers cracking opportunities for walks and wildlife-spotting, with trails around the lakes and wetlands of Idle Valley Nature Reserve (15 minutes' drive) and lakes for fishing too.

Then there's Sherwood Forest, 25 minutes away: some 450 acres of wildlife among ancient oak trees, alongside a wealth of biking and walking trails to take you through them. Adventure seekers can see it all from the tree-tops on ropes and wires at Go Ape, and the kids can clamber about at Robin Hood’s Hideout, an acclaimed natural play area.

For family antics out of the forest, Sundown Adventure Park (20 minutes) has rides and themed playgrounds for the under-10s and families can also make tracks for Ferry Farm Country Park (45 minutes), to feed lambs, meet pigs and zoom about on go-karts and the adventure playground.

An hour away and a major hub since Robin Hood's days, Nottingham still draws the crowds. Tour the castle and the caves, stop for a snifter in Ye Trip To Jerusalem (oldest pub in England, perhaps...), skate on ice at Motorpoint Arena and see what law and order meant in the Sheriff’s days at the National Justice Museum.

For further historical wanderings, Creswell Crags presents an array of prehistoric caves in a cracking limestone gorge and Newark's castle, Air Museum and National Civil War Centre sum up the centuries very entertainingly, all around half an hour away.

Must see

  • Sherwood Forest Country Park (6.3 miles)
