  • Riverside site in grounds of a 17th-century house in Nottinghamshire
  • Close to Sherwood Forest and 25 miles from Nottingham
  • Space for outdoor activities; rope swing and stepping stones
You'll sense the history all around you at The Old Vicarage, from the old house to the remains of the water mill in the river bed. Stays here are in the grounds of a 17th-century house in the village of Elkesley, six miles from Worksop and 25 miles from Nottingham. Its grounds run down to the banks of the Poulter river, and are lined with stands of acacia, sycamore, ash and oak trees which were originally donated to the first vicar by the Duke of Newcastle in the 1830s. There's plenty of space around the site for traditional outdoor activities, with a rope swing and stepping stones over the shallow river and a bridge that's perfect for playing Pooh Sticks. In the surrounding area there are animal parks and nature reserves to walk around, or to head back further in time, you could take one of the trails through ancient Sherwood Forest, around quarter of an hour's drive away. Every bank holiday, the site opens up their Cave Bar, a cool little space built into an exposure of 500-million-year-old sandstone, with a chillout room, TV room and games, plus an outdoor terrace for sipping drinks out in the sunshine. Other amenities include a washing-up area and bathrooms with plentiful hot showers, toilets and baby changing facilities. Barbecues are welcome on site, as long as you keep them two feet off the ground.

What customers say

This picturesque campsite is highly praised for its beautiful setting and the shallow river, which is a major hit with children for paddling and playing. Families appreciate the safe, contained environment and the abundance of play equipment, including swings and zip lines. The cave bar, fire pits, and occasional ice cream van also add to the positive experience. While many find the staff friendly and helpful, some reviews mention that facilities, particularly toilets and showers, are basic, dated, and could benefit from more frequent cleaning and upgrades. Despite these concerns, many guests express a desire to return.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Absolutely gorgeous scenery. The noise from the nearby road didn't bother us.
The pitches weren't the most level, but it didn't affect us at all, and it added to the gorgeous landscape.
Hearing the stream and birds was beautiful.
Well maintained.
The trees were used for a lot of the park structures, which was a nice touch and unique.

Disliked Not much of a 'shop'.
People kept flushing nappies and wipes down the toilets which blocked the showers and 2 of the toilets. However, these issues were dealt with asap and with regular updates from the maintenance man.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely surroundings nice views and the river
The cave bar
Friendly staff on arrival.

Disliked Shower and toilet facilities poor, dirty. We’re not cleaned during three days we stayed. Showers and toilets blocked and flooding. Couldnt park car near pitches or get car close to pitch due to the river

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi
The toilets were cleaned regularly during your stay. We had to do this even more often due to someone flushing baby wipes and nappies down the toilet when there are signs saying not too.

We allowed you to park near your pitch to unload and then move them due to the amount of rain we have had recently and the ground isn’t the most solid and we didn’t want anyone to get stuck.

Thanks
The Old Vicarage Team

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Spacious pitches with plenty full of electric hook ups. Cave bar and entertainment was a good hit, especially for the kids during the Easter holidays. Please bear in mind if the river is high, that you can’t drive through and park beside your tent.

Disliked Nothing much but worth noting the shower block was small and in need of updating especially when you stay for a few days.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Beautiful location and site 15 min drive to nearby town. Lovely site especially the river running through it

Disliked The cave bar prices seem to be a little off. Staff seemed to be making prices up a little bit. Start of the weekend 2 drinks was under £10 then it went up to £10 for 2 drinks and on my last drink on Sunday I payed £6.50 for 1 pint of peroni. We where also told not to have an open fire even tho when we booked it said we where aloud if off the ground. This was confirmed by the site map which had the rules on the back and it said open fires are aloud if off the ground. These 2 issues did put a dampener on our stay

From the manager: Hi
Thanks for your review.
You should have been informed about open fires, we decided at the end of the last season we were not going to include these on our pitches due to burn marks on our grass.
The prices in the bar were changing due to dates, we had some stock going out of date at the end of April that we wanted to sell but we sold this cheaper than usual price, we may have ran out of this stock , hence the price increase , there was a note on one of our fridges stating this.
Peroni is £6.50 per pint anyway.
Thanks

Luxury 1 bedroom cabin

Liked Stayed in the log cabin in the old vicarage. It was absolutely beautiful, the pictures don't do it justice. Beautiful grounds, heated clean and beautiful lodge. Invited to watch fireworks display at midnight. An absolute must visit will definitely be booking again. Thank you for a lovely time.

Local attractions

The surrounding countryside has great places for walks and wildlife-spotting, with trails around the lakes and wetlands of Idle Valley Nature Reserve (15 minutes' drive) and lakes for fishing too. Then there's Sherwood Forest, 25 minutes away: some 450 acres of wildlife among ancient oak trees, alongside a wealth of biking and walking trails to take you through them. Adventure seekers can see it all from the treetops on ropes and wires at Go Ape, and the kids can clamber about at Robin Hood’s Hideout, an acclaimed natural play area. For family antics out of the forest, Sundown Adventure Park (20 minutes) has rides and themed playgrounds for the under-10s and families can also make tracks for Ferry Farm Country Park (45 minutes), to feed lambs, meet pigs and zoom about on go-karts and the adventure playground. An hour away and a major hub since Robin Hood's days, Nottingham still draws the crowds. Tour the castle and the caves, stop for a snifter in Ye Trip To Jerusalem (oldest pub in England, perhaps...), skate on ice at Motorpoint Arena and see what law and order meant in the Sheriff’s days at the National Justice Museum. For further historical wanderings, Creswell Crags presents an array of prehistoric caves in a cracking limestone gorge and Newark's castle, Air Museum and National Civil War Centre sum up the centuries very entertainingly, all around half an hour away.
