The red lion

  • Simple site in the grounds of a 19th-century coaching inn
  • Lincolnshire Wolds walks and Skegness within half an hour's drive
  • Pub with food; a 10-minute walk from the Aviation Heritage Centre
Hikes, wildlife and generous helpings of history are all dished up at The Red Lion, a simple site in the grounds of an old Lincolnshire inn. At a crossroads in the village of East Kirkby, The Red Lion has been refreshing travellers since 1841; more recently, it was a favoured watering hole for the men and women of Bomber Command in World War II, and the pub’s décor pays tribute to them. The staff are steeped in the history of the old coaching inn and the nearby airfield, and can point you towards the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, 10 minutes’ walk down the road and on the site of the former Royal Air Force base. The Red Lion makes a splendid base for aviation and wartime history buffs, with the heritage centre nearby and the displays and memorials of the International Bomber Command Centre a 45-minute drive away. As it’s on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds and around half an hour's drive from the coast, it’s also well placed for walks, stately home visits and wildlife watching. Most importantly, it’s at the back of a friendly pub (which has varied winter and summer opening days and hours, but is always closed on Mondays). It serves hot food alongside local beers and other refreshing tipples. Canine companions are welcome in the bar (it’d be nice if they bought a drink…) and on the site.

What customers say

This is a well-organised, peaceful campsite with spacious, level pitches, praised for its cleanliness and friendly, helpful staff. Many highlight the on-site pub as a significant draw, serving excellent, generously portioned food and offering a welcoming atmosphere. Its proximity to the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre is a major plus for aviation enthusiasts. While most visitors report a positive experience, some note that the toilet and shower facilities are dated and could benefit from an upgrade.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked Pub was excellent, great staff, enormous portions with every meal. Camping plots are generous and well set out.
Facilities are very adequate but there will be a queue during busy times. Always clean though, the showers are the best I have used, no timer button, just switch on, wash and switch off.

Disliked The plots are separated by a link chain. It would be much safer if rope was used.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thankyou for you review we are struggling to understand a 5 out of 10 review of campsite with the review you have left and find this disappointing to say the least, we tried rope for some time on the campsite and we deemed it more of a hazard the chain link breaks easily under any stress, were rope does not break easily, so chain link is actually much much more safer than rope due to this,

We also cannot understand why a 5/10 when all other areas you have rated so high

To say we are disappoint that we were not reached out to us over this, and the fact that you would stay again

We are disappointed but will continue to improve our site but I’m afriad we believe the chain link provides a safe and convinet way of separating the plots not only this but they can also be unhooked and move if need be as long as they are replaced on leaving the plot, so they actually are a lot safer and better than any rope

Thanks

Fantastic site will stay here again when visiting friends.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked Fantastic place to stay, left to our own devices. For me was great as I knew I could just get on. Really nice campsite clean great washing up area, showers were good and toilets clean. Everyone kept themselves to themselves come and go as you please barrier system made me feel secure. Great there’s a pub (we didn’t use it as we had plans with friends locally) but saw a few of the campers bring their pints back and sounded like a great atmosphere! Great park for little ones. Also WiFi was fantastic as we like to watch a film before bed! Great size pitch plenty of room

Disliked Great pitch plot 10, but opposite the park where the children were left to play unattended so some of the language while eating our tea wasn’t appropriate and the children screaming and shouting at 21.30. Unaware if there are rules for the playground?
But this is nothing to do with the campsite itself

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked This was our 4th stay this year. We absolutely love it here. It's great to see all the improvements being made over the years. The play park has just been done and the kids had a brilliant time.
The food in the pub was to die for! And is the breakfast in the cafe over the road. Plus the little shop has all the basics covered.
We love the laid back feel to the site, everything you need to know is sent in an email, however should you need to speak to someone, Chris is usually available on site or staff in the cafe over the road are always happy to help

Disliked That we had to come home!

Local attractions

With the chalk hills and sandstone peaks of the Wolds so close, walkers and cyclists are particularly well sorted. A 15-minute drive away, Horncastle is a handy point to join the Viking Way: 147 miles of country trails linking the banks of the Humber with the wetlands around Rutland Water. For a more detailed look at the Wolds, take the Lindsey Trail from Horncastle up to Market Rasen (45 minutes by car), a far-from-flat route of around 80 miles passing through a landscape of ancient woodlands, Neolithic long barrows and fenland views. If the sea’s more your style set course for Skegness, half an hour away, for pier and beach walks, sandcastle building and trips to the Natureland Seal Sanctuary. The same distance away but rather quieter, the Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve is a wild stretch of coastline crisscrossed with walks and bike trails, visited by skylarks and terns, brent geese and snow bunting. If you’re up for a stately home or two, you can’t get much more stately than the sturdy brick towers of 15th-century Tattershall Castle (15 minutes), while 18th-century Gunby Hall (20 minutes) is sometimes compared to a (very large) dolls’ house.
