The Red Lion: Grass pitches

General

  • Simple site in the grounds of a 19th-century coaching inn
  • Lincolnshire Wolds walks and Skegness within half an hour's drive
  • Pub with food; hot showers; 10 mins walk from Aviation Heritage Centre

Hikes, wildlife and generous helpings of history are all dished up at The Red Lion, a simple site in the grounds of an old Lincolnshire inn.

At a crossroads in the village of East Kirkby, The Red Lion has been refreshing travellers since 1841; more recently, it was a favoured watering hole for the men and women of Bomber Command in World War II, and the pub’s décor pays tribute to them. The staff are steeped in the history of the old coaching inn and the nearby airfield, and can point you towards the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, 10 minutes’ walk down the road and on the site of the former Royal Air Force base.

The Red Lion makes a splendid base for aviation and wartime history buffs, with the heritage centre nearby and the displays and memorials of the International Bomber Command Centre a 45-minute drive away. As it’s on the edge on the Lincolnshire Wolds and around half an hour's drive from the coast, it’s also well placed for walks, stately home visits and wildlife watching.

Most importantly, it’s at the back of a friendly pub, with free wifi and serving hot food from 6pm to 8pm every evening alongside local beers and other refreshing tipples. Canine companions are welcome in the bar (it’d be nice if they bought a drink…) and on the site.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The restaurant is open between 01/01 and 31/12.

Free wifi access is limited to the pub and car park area; it is not available on the caravan site.

Stayed here last year on an electric pitch and came back this time for a last-minute night without electric. This time we pitched on the rally field towards the back. No marked out spaces on this field but I prefer it like this when we don't need electric. The whole field is well mowed, drains well when the rain gets heavy, and is flat almost throughout, with only a few rabbit holes to avoid.

The toilets are clean and modern, just a warning about the tap on the left sink in the men's though, it goes everywhere if you're not expecting it. Showers look tidy too but with current restrictions I wasn't sure I should use them.

The pub is great, and they're doing their best with the outdoor space in the circumstances. Definitely worth a late evening pint at the least, though the food is well worth a go.

All together, well worth a couple of nights to explore this quiet part of Lincolnshire. I'm sure we'll be back sometime soon, thanks!

A lovely quiet campsite, the pitches were well spaced and well kept. We choose electric hook-up so we were close to the pub end of the campsite. We had booked a table at the pub Friday and Saturday only to be disappointed the landlord had not put our Saturday booking in so we did not end up staying for the evening as table not near a heater or under cover, so we opted for a takeaway meal. Staff were very friendly and Chris was apologetic. Toilet and shower block very warm and very clean, although shared with pub customers. Easy access for drinking water and ‘outdoor’ washing up facility available. Lovely area to explore only a short drive away. Excellent WiFi in tent. Stayed dry for the weekend so a bonus!
    Would recommend and visit again.

    Disliked:

Takeaway meal disappointing. Decent sized portions however very dry pie and chips!

From the manager...

Hi, I’m very sorry regarding you booking I have no idea what went wrong as I only had the Friday booking it the diary again apologies for that, we have change our pie supplier recently and after this weekend we have decided not to go with these pies any more as we were not happy with the quality. Hopefully on your next visit the pies will be of better quality again apologies and we hope it has not put you off coming again chris

Local attractions

With the chalk hills and sandstone peaks of the Wolds so close, walkers and cyclists are particularly well sorted. A 15-minute drive away, Horncastle is a handy point to join the Viking Way: 147 miles of country trails linking the banks of the Humber with the wetlands around Rutland Water.

For a more detailed look at the Wolds, take the Lindsey Trail from Horncastle up to Market Rasen (45 minutes by car), a far-from-flat route of around 80 miles passing through a landscape of ancient woodlands, Neolithic long barrows and fenland views.

If the sea’s more your style set course for Skegness, half an hour away, for pier and beach walks, sandcastle building and trips to the Natureland Seal Sanctuary. The same distance away but rather quieter, the Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve is a wild stretch of coastline crisscrossed with walks and bike trails, visited by skylarks and terns, brent geese and snow bunting.

If you’re up for a stately home or two, you can’t get much more stately than the sturdy brick towers of 15th-century Tattershall Castle (15 minutes), while 18th-century Gunby Hall (20 minutes) is sometimes compared to a (very large) dolls’ house.

Must see

  • Lincoln Medieval Bishops' Palace (22.9 miles)
  • Lincoln Cathedral (22.9 miles)
  • Lincoln Castle (23.0 miles)

National Trust

  • Gunby Hall Estate: Monksthorpe Chapel (7.0 miles)
  • Tattershall Castle (8.2 miles)
