The Red Lion: Pitches

General

  • Simple site in the grounds of a 19th-century coaching inn
  • Lincolnshire Wolds walks and Skegness within half an hour's drive
  • Pub with food; hot showers; 10 mins walk from Aviation Heritage Centre

Hikes, wildlife and generous helpings of history are all dished up at The Red Lion, a simple site in the grounds of an old Lincolnshire inn.

At a crossroads in the village of East Kirkby, The Red Lion has been refreshing travellers since 1841; more recently, it was a favoured watering hole for the men and women of Bomber Command in World War II, and the pub’s décor pays tribute to them. The staff are steeped in the history of the old coaching inn and the nearby airfield, and can point you towards the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, 10 minutes’ walk down the road and on the site of the former Royal Air Force base.

The Red Lion makes a splendid base for aviation and wartime history buffs, with the heritage centre nearby and the displays and memorials of the International Bomber Command Centre a 45-minute drive away. As it’s on the edge on the Lincolnshire Wolds and around half an hour's drive from the coast, it’s also well placed for walks, stately home visits and wildlife watching.

Most importantly, it’s at the back of a friendly pub, with free wifi and serving hot food from 6pm to 8pm every evening alongside local beers and other refreshing tipples. Canine companions are welcome in the bar (it’d be nice if they bought a drink…) and on the site.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The restaurant is open between 01/01 and 31/12.

The pitches are on grass, so the ground may not be perfectly level or flat.

Free wifi access is limited to the pub and car park area; it is not available on the caravan site.

You name it, everything. Well spaced pitches and very well maintained. Spotless facilities and all you could wish for. Pub food is amazing and all home cooked at a more than reasonable price. Steak pie with huge chunks of tender beef and enough to feed 2. Home cooked chips which is a rarity these days. Friendly and helpful service and the drinks were super cheap. Returning next year for sure. Cant recommend enough. Dont miss out on this little gem fellow caravans and campers. You will love it and, like us, will definitely return for another great stay

Camera in wash area of toilets and lack of space in the toilet area. We were lucky that it was not peak time for holidays as we would have struggled with showers and washing. There was no WiFi on the Ralley field.

Spacious pitches on a clean, level grass field with good access. Bit of a mix up on arrival as another tourer had pitched (wrongly!) on our allocated pitch, but a quick call to Chris (the owner) soon sorted things out. Water and waste disposal easy to get to, and well equipped with long hoses - showers and toilets cleaned daily - electrics close to van. Chris is very pleasant and welcoming, and runs a good site. Loads of local places to drink/eat - highly recommend the Royal Oak, about 2 miles down the road for superb food at very reasonable prices. A visit to the Heritage Aviation Centre next door (accessible by walking across the field at the end of the site) is a must for those interested in wartime history - it's the home of "Just Jane", one of the few remaining Lancaster bombers, among other exhibits. We will definitely return to this site.

Local attractions

With the chalk hills and sandstone peaks of the Wolds so close, walkers and cyclists are particularly well sorted. A 15-minute drive away, Horncastle is a handy point to join the Viking Way: 147 miles of country trails linking the banks of the Humber with the wetlands around Rutland Water.

For a more detailed look at the Wolds, take the Lindsey Trail from Horncastle up to Market Rasen (45 minutes by car), a far-from-flat route of around 80 miles passing through a landscape of ancient woodlands, Neolithic long barrows and fenland views.

If the sea’s more your style set course for Skegness, half an hour away, for pier and beach walks, sandcastle building and trips to the Natureland Seal Sanctuary. The same distance away but rather quieter, the Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve is a wild stretch of coastline crisscrossed with walks and bike trails, visited by skylarks and terns, brent geese and snow bunting.

If you’re up for a stately home or two, you can’t get much more stately than the sturdy brick towers of 15th-century Tattershall Castle (15 minutes), while 18th-century Gunby Hall (20 minutes) is sometimes compared to a (very large) dolls’ house.

Must see

  • Lincoln Medieval Bishops' Palace (22.9 miles)
  • Lincoln Cathedral (22.9 miles)
  • Lincoln Castle (23.0 miles)

National Trust

  • Gunby Hall Estate: Monksthorpe Chapel (7.0 miles)
  • Tattershall Castle (8.2 miles)
