The red lion

  • Simple site in the grounds of a 19th-century coaching inn
  • Lincolnshire Wolds walks and Skegness within half an hour's drive
  • Pub with food; a 10-minute walk from the Aviation Heritage Centre
Hikes, wildlife and generous helpings of history are all dished up at The Red Lion, a simple site in the grounds of an old Lincolnshire inn. At a crossroads in the village of East Kirkby, The Red Lion has been refreshing travellers since 1841; more recently, it was a favoured watering hole for the men and women of Bomber Command in World War II, and the pub’s décor pays tribute to them. The staff are steeped in the history of the old coaching inn and the nearby airfield, and can point you towards the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, 10 minutes’ walk down the road and on the site of the former Royal Air Force base. The Red Lion makes a splendid base for aviation and wartime history buffs, with the heritage centre nearby and the displays and memorials of the International Bomber Command Centre a 45-minute drive away. As it’s on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds and around half an hour's drive from the coast, it’s also well placed for walks, stately home visits and wildlife watching. Most importantly, it’s at the back of a friendly pub (which has varied winter and summer opening days and hours, but is always closed on Mondays). It serves hot food alongside local beers and other refreshing tipples. Canine companions are welcome in the bar (it’d be nice if they bought a drink…) and on the site.

Powered grass and earth campsite

Liked Nice size pitch and clean ladies facilities. We didn’t get to eat in the pub but we will return again. Not expensive.

Disliked Very dusty and gravelly underfoot. Loads of muck trod into our motorhome. Gents facilities were disgusting but that’s probably due to the type of campers there at the time.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite (deluxe)

Liked Great location, good pub food, friendly staff and very dog friendly
Pitch size good and level
Even though it was a family site, people respected noise levels
Facilities (toilets & showers) very clean
Very good free WiFi
Good communication from the owner post booking & pre-arrival

Disliked The charge for dogs! at £20 per dog per stay is expensive especially when there are no dog facilities such as dog wash, secure play / walking area or poo bins onsite.
Nothing against the site but it is strange you cannot recycle glass, just wonder what the pub does with their glass?

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thankyou for your review, just to let you know the £20 charge as stated when booking is for more than 2 dogs we allow 2 dogs free per pitch any more than 2 and we have a charge of £20 this is due to occupancy levels mainly, glass recycling is provided in the recycling bins on site, the pub also has a bin next to the pub which is for mixed glass only, i must say we are always approachable for these types of questions and given the clarity we could have given this sort of thing could have been avoided thanks

Liked Not much

Disliked The park the kids played on looked like it would fall down with them on it, the toilets r disgusting and never cleaned the showers u carnt breath in there an the water is scolding or to cold and the vents need a good clean, never seen any cleaners at all all week no disinfectant round at all

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi, your review is not acrurate at all the play park is brand new and is perfectly safe and secure, the toilet block is cleaner every single day by myself we disinfect and bleach them every day, we have new fans ready to be installed and the water pressure in afriad is just down to our rural location not only this but had you ready any of the information you could have spoke to us in person instead of leaving a disgusting review when I myself work very hard to make sure I clean the toilets every day, we cannot and will not follow every single person in to the toilets to clean up after them and it is just an impossible task, if we were to employ a cleaner instead to maintain these toilet bollock 3 times a day the price per night would have to rise significantly, I beleive this review is just down to the fact that you were spoken to about not watching your children playing on the tractor and play park and were allowing them just to do as they pleased which again it is 100% mentioned on every sign that children must be supervised, the play park is more than adequate and everyone else has said how great it is so I believe this is just becuase you did not like being told to monitor your children’s activities while on site, we are glad you will not be coming back to our site as the behaviour you showed was discusting Thankyou for not returning l

Local attractions

With the chalk hills and sandstone peaks of the Wolds so close, walkers and cyclists are particularly well sorted. A 15-minute drive away, Horncastle is a handy point to join the Viking Way: 147 miles of country trails linking the banks of the Humber with the wetlands around Rutland Water. For a more detailed look at the Wolds, take the Lindsey Trail from Horncastle up to Market Rasen (45 minutes by car), a far-from-flat route of around 80 miles passing through a landscape of ancient woodlands, Neolithic long barrows and fenland views. If the sea’s more your style set course for Skegness, half an hour away, for pier and beach walks, sandcastle building and trips to the Natureland Seal Sanctuary. The same distance away but rather quieter, the Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve is a wild stretch of coastline crisscrossed with walks and bike trails, visited by skylarks and terns, brent geese and snow bunting. If you’re up for a stately home or two, you can’t get much more stately than the sturdy brick towers of 15th-century Tattershall Castle (15 minutes), while 18th-century Gunby Hall (20 minutes) is sometimes compared to a (very large) dolls’ house.
