Setcops Farm: Wild camping

General

  • Dog-friendly family site by the Viking Way walking/bike trail
  • Half an hour's drive from Cleethorpes beach and Go Ape adventure park
  • On-site bar; a 10-minute drive from Brigg pubs and farmers' market

Pick yourself a pitch at this peaceful farm site and get set for easy access to lots of lovely Lincolnshire days out… Setcops Farm is a family-friendly smallholding on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in a handy spot for days packed with visits to east coast beaches, farm parks, adventure parks, historic houses…

Walking and cycling are likely to be on the cards around here too, whether you’re taking a 20-minute wander down to the local pub in the village of North Kelsey, pedalling to pretty nearby villages or setting out for lengthy hikes on the Viking Way (which runs past the site on its 147-mile route from the Humber through to Rutland).

Eats and drinks can be sorted at the pubs and takeaways of Brigg and Caistor (both 10 minutes’ drive away); alternatively, check out both towns’ regular farmers’ markets and shops for tasty things to cook on the barbecue or consume by the firepit back at base.

Cool drinks are on the menu at the site bar too (which is open on bank holidays and by request) – sip on these while the kids use the spacious garden area for games of football, swingball or badminton.

The central wooden structure was great yo offer some shelter at meal times as the tent for my little one and I is only small. Although this would have benefitted from being a little larger.

Football goals and swing ball for the little ones to play was great.

The fact the site is small and safe is brilliant. There’s no road near the field which is great.

The toilets are great, warm water and very close to all pitches. These were clean and enough for the site.

The field was nice and flat for pitching on.

    Disliked:

It would be such an amazing little site if they had a shower block. We would return if this was added to the facilities. The disabled toilet could easily be adapted and changed into a wet room I’m sure. This would surely add to their wedding options too as people may camp/caravan there too! Also the field was empty really in the height of the Summer holidays and I’m sure that’s only due to the shower situation.

Staff were amazing, I'd left a load of gear at home. Katrina helped me loads. Advised me where to get things.
    Brigg nearby if supplies needed
Swingball was a hit with the big kids
    Waking up to bird song
No WiFi ( mobile signal was strong though) loved seeing everyone sitting with a book.
Chinese takeaway from Caistor, nice drive out and lovely food.
Just peace and quiet, can't wait to come vack and meet the Alpacas!!!
    Spotlessly clean toilets available 24/7.

    Disliked:

No showers but I'd not read the website properly. My bad. No trouble tho, wash basins were fine.

Clubhouse not open no bar. Travelled a long way to just sit in a field, disappointing. and expensive.

From the manager...

It was unfortunate that you did not read the description stating the bar is only open on bank holidays or by request as I explained to you after your arrival. You did say that the day you booked your pitch had been very busy purchasing your campervan so perhaps you hadn't had time to read the site description thoroughly. I also explained that the local pub The Butchers Arms was open or I could have arranged for drinks, the majority of people bring their own hence why it's really not worth employing bar staff unless it's a bank holiday. I did think it was odd to travel five hours for just a one night stay but you said you had had trouble booking more local sites.

Local attractions

If the thunder of hooves appeals, it's a 20-minute trip by car to Market Rasen racecourse, where alongside the racing of steeds there are regular family entertainments, beer festivals and live music. For noisier racing, head 40 minutes to Cadwell Park's motor circuit for regular car and bike meets, vintage rallies and the chance to floor it on the bends yourself.

There are assorted cows, goats, pigs and lambs to meet, pet and feed at Hall Farm Park (10 minutes), along with pedal karts and play barns. If you've caught the farming bug, have a go at milking the cows at Rand Farm Park (30 minutes) and take a tractor ride too.

Also around half an hour away is Normanby Hall, a country park where you can spot wildlife, learn about rural life in the museum, tour the elegant Regency mansion and zoom through the trees at the Go Ape adventure park.

For traditional seaside antics, it's a half-hour drive to Cleethorpes for pier amusements, sandcastle building, 10-pin bowling, coastal rides on the light railway and a zoo to nose around (plus some mighty fine fish and chips of course…). If you're keen to see what lurks beneath the surface of the world's seas, pay a visit to The Deep, the excellent aquarium in Hull (40 minutes' drive).

Must see

  • Far Ings National Nature Reserve (12.9 miles)
  • The Deep (16.2 miles)
  • Ferens Art Gallery (16.4 miles)

National Trust

  • Maister House (16.5 miles)
  • Tattershall Castle (29.7 miles)
