  • Remote and rural site in the Lincolnshire countryside
  • Home to many rescue animals including hens, pigs, geese and ducks
  • Well-stocked fishing lake
What a lush site this is for gainful countryside holidays in the Lincolnshire countryside, whiling days away fishing, woodland walking and just lazing by the lakeside with open book or one's very own thoughts. There are animals too… Small and family-run Sunflower Park near Gainsborough has taken in quite a few rescue animals in their time (they're a friendly and welcoming lot here), so on site you'll meet the three family pets as well as some alpacas, several ex-battery hens and their strutting cockerel. Also adopted are a family of geese, ducks, Kunekune pigs and a couple of Gloucester old spots: do make sure to say hi to all. As you might guess, this is a relaxed and amiable site, set remotely and rurally on a five-acre plot that includes paddocks, a playground, open pastureland, a private woodland walk and a well-stocked fishing lake exclusively for guests' use. You might reckon the park's remote rural setting makes it a wildlife haven too, and you'd reckon right: its boundaries run directly into Laughton Forest's Tuetoes Wood, a Forestry Commission nature haven for walking and cycling among the trees, and home to wildlife like deer, foxes, owls, rabbits, jays, pheasants, cuckoos, woodpeckers – all within viewable and hearing distance from your pitch. Sunflower Park has toilets, showers, a drying room, a launderette and ice pack freezing. Firepits are available for hire for the whole of guests' stays and arrive full and ready to light. Please note that due to being in a forest location and on sandy ground, you will most likely come across spiders, ants, lizards, grass snakes, beetles etc. Please only book if you are comfortable with the fact that there will be wildlife around you.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The rescue animals! The lovely forest and pitches under the trees. Very friendly site. Very surprised by Gizmo coming to me for scritches!

Disliked We pitched slightly too close to the piggy...got a few wafts of piggy smells 🤣
There isn't any free WiFi, but that wasn't something we needed. Too much else to entertain us.
Also the visiting pizza guy wasn't at all friendly, but that's not the owner's attitude at all, they were lovely. Maybe give the pizza man a pint or something....

Thankyou.
Luigi is a passionate Italian, who cooks great pizzas.
I will feed this back to him lol.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked *Secure dog exercising field (also great for playing in as it’s the only grass field)
*Freezer for refreshing ice blocks
*The pigs look happy at least
*Live music Friday and Monday
*Pizza van on site Saturday
*The owners are friendly and happy to chat (almost didn’t leave this review because of this)
*Hire of fire pits and fuel

Disliked Don’t be fooled by their cute name and promise of ‘rescuing’ animals. This campsite can dress itself up with colourful bunting and sunflower pictures all it wants, but that doesn’t mask the truth: it is filthy, mistreating the animals in it’s care and doesn’t follow hygiene or safety procedures a campsite should adhere too.

I’ll start with the most concerning aspect of this park- the animals they so say rescue. There are row and rows of chickens contained in tiny cages barely big enough to flap its wings in. A rabbit hutch contained a duck and 2 chickens and that could barely stand up. Not a free range chicken in sight, only crammed in caged animals. The majority of the geese who are free range have angel wing disease from being fed a diet of bread (we watched staff members feed them this), and the goat and cow are penned in a woodland swamp of their own filthy with no room to run and no grass to graze. These animals are not properly cared for.

Next onto the facilities. For our 3 nights stay, these were filthy and cleaned once on the Sunday with a quick blast of a jet wash. No evidence of disinfecting or scrubbing or a regular cleaning chart. They are disgustingly filthy and mouldy even after their ‘clean’. The dirt isn’t just surface dirt from the sandy/ dusty site, it’s years worth of inadequate cleaning built up. Make sure you take your own loo roll and hand soap as it’s likely it’s run out and your own hand towel as there’s no way of drying your hands in there. Remember to allow extra time for a shower as if someone else is using the 2nd shower at the same time, yours will reduce to a dribble. Also take a towel to lay on the floor so you don’t come out dirtier than when you went in.

Now onto the playground. Are your children up to date on their tetanus jabs and do you know where the local hospital is? You’re going to need it if you let your kids play on this playground of rusted metal and nettles.

Finally the ‘field’, if you can call it that. We love wild camping. All we ask for is a green field and clean bathroom facilities. This park failed on both counts. If this field was once grass, it hasn’t been maintained. It is mainly sand and dried, dusty mud. If you are lucky to be one of the first on the field, you might bag a flat pitch, otherwise you’re on a steep hill.

Perhaps a labour of love once upon a time by the looks of the hand painted pictures on the buildings (which have now faded and peeled), the love and willingness to labour for this site is long gone - it is run down, unloved and dirty. This park has so much potential if it was properly cared for. Even down to the ‘not to be sold separately’ packs of ice creams in the shop.

From the manager: Right, OK, so how do we answer this personal insult and utter character assassination, it isn't a review
Written with an evil undertone that causes concern given that the author thought twice about submitting it, as we were so nice. My arse
So nice you gave us 1/10 for customer service, especially given the fact that none of what you mention now. Was not spoken directly to us during those 'nice chats'.
You scored us 1/10 for accommodation yet you brought your own.
The chicken runs are regulated for 15-16 large birds.
We have purchased larger runs. And still we only hold 6 birds in each one. One has 8 in but two are dwarf breeds
The two chickens and duck in the 'tiny run' are within a rehab program after illness or injury and their placement is deliberate to restrict movement.
Why don't our birds free roam?
We have over 50 cockerels. These would fight to the death with each other. Some would be nasty to visitors and kids. Also it's the time of year that fox cubs are learning to fend n hunt.
If free roaming our poultry would be slaughtered.
Highland cattles natural habitat is woodland.
Her lack of grass is also substituted with daily hay and green veg.
Wd have 3 out of 22 geese with angel wing
Your understanding of Maths and percentages is dkmewhat out.
Angel wing is not caused by feeding bread.
Experts can't nail down the true cause. UT it incurs very soon after hatching, so hardly diet based. Plus the 'majority of 19 don't have.
We are linked into numerous producers and charities that ensure fresh fruit, veg and salad produce are used and not wasted. Due to this all our animals have a very healthy and varied diet. Both for their physical well being and mental stimulation/enrichment.
It is a blatant lie that the wet rooms were only washed on the Sunday.
Every day we do numerous spot checks n cleans, as well as a power wash daily.
We provide loads of toilet roll for unsupervised kids to rip it all up and chuck in the corner, as evidenced in one of your photos
Hand drying. We provided towels for campers to use go wipe absorbs, including, instead of toilet paper. Plus it is not hygienic for multi use
We then provided paper hand towels and children filled toilets with them and blocked them.
Electric driers were ripped off the walls.
People are asked to clean behind them. We also provide squeegies for this purpose . So we are totally at fault and fallen out love of the place because others can't show us the respect we show them. You're an idiot..
The play area. We are a small holding. There will be nettles. Your photos again evidence young plant, because last week they were strimmed. Like they were yesterday. We have a program such is the magnitude of our work load. We plan so we don't miss.
Right you found a screw stinking out of a post. You kindly took a photo. Which shows its very shiny and the post had a fresh splintered out piece of timber. This clearly. Is fresh and .must of occurred since our last documented safety check.
Conscientious people. On finding such a risk to children would of reported to staff or ourselves. Nasty. Irresponsible cretins would take a photo, not say anything and use maliciously in an assassination of a review. You arsehole!.
The field clear was once grass, and again after covid.
This year has been phenomenally hot n dry leading to very poor grass growth. Added to this the Irresponsible digging allowed by parents or unseen due to lack of supervision. Added to this the inability to reverse caravan, being totally reliant on motor mover, along with all pitches being in constant use culminates in bold, uneven areas.
We have a program of regressing planned for the autumn, when the site is less busy.
Steep slopes. There are non in lincolnshire let alone on Sunflower Park. The vast majority of pitches ( more than 3) are flat.
The biggest insult of the lot is that this place is unloved.
Everyone who works, many of whom do so for free absolutely work their arses off.
Our days are 16 hours long 7days a week, every day of the year.. yes we even open on Xmas day!
Constantly we are upgrading and improving the site after all animal needs.
Every penny earned at Sunflower Park stays in Sunflower park. We have no wages and invested redundancies and pensions.
All to bring hope and life to hundreds of Animals. We give plenty of free holidays to families suffering with cancer and mental health.
Children can do placements and DoE hours here.
Those customers we charge or sell stuff to is fine at very very competitive prices. This is in order to provide wellbeing breaks to all despite their budgets.
Why do we do all this in the way we do is because we are nice folk trying to do right for animals and people in need. Just to be demolished emotionally and professionally by Ill informed or ignorant tossers like you.
We could have explained all this to you, jf you were decent enough folk to come and talk to us.
Oh and multi pack ice creams. We are a not for profit set up. Raising money for animals in need. It is not against the law to sell these. They are manufacturers instructions in order to fully achieve huge profits and pay share holders huge dividends. Grow up.
We thank you for causing us so much distress and hurt over the last few days along with questioning our desire to continue, just to be abused by dickheads like you.
Have a long and sad life, whilst we try to bring happiness and good memories to others, four legged or two.
If you don't mind we will stick with the support we get from DEFRA, RSPCA, Environment Health, Food Hygiene and Trading Standards over the claptrap and filth you are vomiting.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The site is rustic and beautiful and the owners are super friendly you can tell they're passionate about the place. The animals are mostly friendly too and for £1 (for a cup of feed) you can have them literally eating out of the palm of your hand. We pitched between the field with the donkeys and the pen with the Highland cow and goat. The field is mostly flat and free of debris and the geese swing by at night to make sure the grass is upkept. The toilets/showers were clean. The showers are really impressive, better than the one I have at home. We didn't use any of the facilities because we're antisocial but there was bar with food, also washing machine, a dryer, microwave, fridge, can get your stuff charged etc, it was well kitted out. The play park was cool too, I had a go on the swing even though I'm 40, loved it.

Liked Couldn’t get over how fantastic our stay was at the sunflower park! It was so easy to find everything was sign posted. The kids loved been outside with all the animals around them. Lots of space for the kids to run and play around, not to add the amazing play area they had on the site for the children to play. When we stayed they had a pizza van come and make fresh pizza. Honestly we loved our stay and can’t wait to come back for more outside fun! Thank you for such an amazing stay!

Electric grass pitch

Liked The site owners are a lovely couple who don't have 101 rules! Simple pitch up and relax. Lovely people to talk to, who will happily stand and have a chat with you!
Facilities are just what you need...showers (basic but working and hot water) toilets, washing up area, little gift shop that sells icecream and cold drinks, cafe if you don't want to make breakfast (highly recommend the sausage sandwich), its own little bar that has dart board and tv if you don't want to miss the match, play area for the kids (the trampolines were a great hit).
Saturday night the pizza van visited and I highly recommend the sunflower pizza (delish!)
We went on a lovely walk in the woods, visited the animals, fell in love with Erica!
The geese are amazing..and made my weekend!
Sunday night we were the only campers and it was so peaceful just listening to the geese talk to one another.
Wifi signal is hit and miss...this isn't a negative for me, as it just meant I could sit back and relax with no interruptions (there are parts of the park where signal is great if you have to have internet). We hired a fire pit for the weekend, had enough logs for 2 nights, and additional logs are cheap enough!

Disliked The sand isn't the best but it didn't stop us having an amazing weekend...just being some crocs that you can wash in the clean up area.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Site was beautiful - natural surroundings, loved the animals, there was a bar on site and options for food.

Really relaxed vibes, fire pits allowed & we could camp near our friends.

Disliked Other campers didn't keep their dogs on leads, and allowed them to bark at some of the animals - not really acceptable pet owner behaviour, and could lead to dogs being disallowed?!

Walkers, hikers, cyclists, energetic runners and nature spotters have Tuetoes Wood right beside Sunflower Park, the Forestry Commission-managed and publicly accessible part of vast Laughton Forest. If you're an avid animal fan, take time to get to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park just outside Doncaster, home to a menagerie of over 300 from around the world, and to The Deep at Hull, one of the biggest aquariums in the UK and a habitat for over 3000 marine critters. Going south, history buffs can get to Lincoln for eleventh century Lincoln Cathedral, the third biggest in Britain after St Paul's in London and York Minster. Lincoln Castle is also well worth a look, to gaze geekily upon one of the four original remaining copies of the Magna Carta.
