General

  • Remote and rural site in the Lincolnshire countryside
  • Home to many rescue animals including hens, pigs, geese and ducks
  • Well-stocked fishing lake

What a lush site this is for gainful countryside holidays in the Lincolnshire countryside, whiling days away fishing, woodland walking and just lazing by the lakeside with open book or one's very own thoughts.

There are animals too… Small and family-run Sunflower Park near Gainsborough has taken in quite a few rescue animals in their time (they're a friendly and welcoming lot here), so on site you'll meet the three family pets as well as several ex-battery hens and their strutting cockerel. Also adopted are a family of geese, ducks, Kunekune pigs and a couple of Gloucester old spots: do make sure to say hi to all.

As you might guess, this is a relaxed and amiable site, set remotely and rurally on a five-acre plot that includes paddocks, a playground, open pastureland, a private woodland walk and a well-stocked fishing lake exclusively for guests' use.

You might reckon the park's remote rural setting makes it a wildlife haven too, and you'd reckon right: its boundaries run directly into Laughton Forest's Tuetoes Wood, a Forestry Commission nature haven for walking and cycling among the trees, and home to wildlife like deer, foxes, owls, rabbits, jays, pheasants, cuckoos, woodpeckers – all within viewable and hearing distance from your pitch.

Sunflower Park has toilets, showers, a drying room, a launderette and ice pack freezing. Firepits are available for hire for the whole of guests' stays and arrive full and ready to light.

we didnt dislike like anything the only one think was we was camping in the wild camping area and you have to walk over to the pitches for the toilet but this is part of camping and we didnt mind but if you want to be right near to the toilets i would book a pitch

From the manager...

thankyou also for your kind review. we do provide options of non electric wild camping pitches or designated non electric pitches nearer to facilities and identify the benefits to both. anyone wishing to be closer to facilities or have very young children or campers with mobility issues please request pitches 5, 6 or 7.

This was our first time camping with young children so wanted somewhere with enough to keep them entertained but still giving then the outdoors experience & this place is just right for that. The playground is big enough to keep them busy for hours & walking around looking at the animals too. The toilet/showers were nice & clean. They have all the facilities needed to have a nice relaxing time. Can't wait to go back again

Massive pitches, lovely quiet area not too far from Gainsborough or scunny (Scunthorpe) lovely couple running the park. The massive plus for us was the fact you could have a camp fire! So many places now do not allow you to do this. Definitely going back next year. Thank you Ian & Josie

From the moment you arrive at Sunflower Park, Josie and Ian (owners) make you feel like a beloved relative that they haven't seen in a long time. They open their hearts and their home. They are kind and patient; nothing is too much trouble. The site is very intimate and peaceful with lots of woodland along one side and field views on the other as far as the eye can see.

    Facilities:
Sunflower Park offers a safe and secure play area for little ones and a bouncy castle is put up when the sun is out.
There are two wet room style bathrooms available on the campsite and an extra bathroom available as an annex at the owners house (this also has laundry facilities should you wish to use them). These are all kept immaculate.
There is an onsite shop which has an honesty policy -just pay for what you need in a little tin before you leave the site.
Sunflower Park is home to many rescue animals with their names and details clearly displayed so you can call them over and pet them should you wish. I hasten to add that all of these animals were ridiculously friendly and are happy to come over (very gentle with children too).
Fire pit rental is available on site which Ian or Josie supply you with ready to go with logs and firefighters and you can have refills for subsequent nights if you wish.
A lake is available for fishing if you like that sort of thing -personally I don't fish so I can't answer any specific questions on it but I'm sure the site can.

We had originally booked to stay the Friday and Saturday night but managed to get an extra night because we loved it so much (never in all my camping years have I ever done this so that tells you how much we loved it!). We've even booked to stay in the rentable caravan for next year!
As I drove off the site I definitely felt very sad to not only be going home but I honestly felt like we were leaving friends. Josie and Ian are rare diamonds and I would recommend the site to anybody and everybody. We can't wait to come back!

Liked the location of the wild camping field, right next to the donkeys. The play park was good and the shop excellent as we forgot a spatula for cooking. We loved the firepits. Had a great evening sat round it toasting marshmallows.

This should be the 'loved' box!
Warm, friendly welcome by Ian & Josie along with a detailed description of what and where things are, plus continued presence throughout our stay, nothing is ever too much trouble - I'd go as far as saying they are the best hosts we have met at any campsite we have visited!
No long list of rules other than clean up after your dogs and keep them under control.
Beautiful location, Immaculate site / facilities and a large pitch, it was a busy week and not once did we have to wait to use the showers / toilets.
Great dog faculities- enclosed field, plenty of poo bins around site and lots of beautiful woodland walks just across the road! A very cute 'fairy tree' can be found in the woods near to Sunflower too.
The onsite shop is well stocked and reasonably priced ( my other half forgot to get me a birthday card and he even got one of those from the shop - luckily for him!)
The rescue animals are just delightful, very well looked after and sociable, Martha & Mabel the pigs was my personal favourite but the dogs favourite animals had to be the super dog friendly donkeys.
The children's play area is a short walk away from all the vans, it's a safe area for them to play too away from any vehicles, I personally think is a great idea as the children have there own area to run wild in and they are not running around people's vans, ( the trampoline is also good fun for the big kids that never grew up too).
The local village of Scotter has a lovely chippy (can highly recommend the fish and chips), along with a couple of shops with free cash machines, hair salon, Chinese and Indian take always ect ect.
Now to the fire pits .. loved loved loved them - reasonably priced and lovely to sit around in the evening - Ian & Josie even clean them out and re-stock them for you as they don't believe you should have to do it whilst on holiday!
We absolutely loved Sunflower, so much so we have already booked again to return next month. Sunflower is without a doubt our new favourite place, and as of our next visit it will also have a very special place in our hearts too.
I would highly recommend it to others that are looking for a peaceful get away in a lovely location.

    Disliked:

We didn't dislike anything, if I was to make one suggestion it would be for a shelf / table of some sort in the shower / toilet blocks to put your dry clothes on whilst showering.

From the manager...

wow. thankyou very much. see you again.
we put the hooks in for spare clothes etc.

Local attractions

Walkers, hikers, cyclists, energetic runners and nature spotters have Tuetoes Wood right beside Sunflower Park, the Forestry Commission-managed and publicly accessible part of vast Laughton Forest.

If you're an avid animal fan, take time to get to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park just outside Doncaster, home to a menagerie of over 300 from around the world, and to The Deep at Hull, one of the biggest aquariums in the UK and a habitat for over 3000 marine critters.

Going south, history buffs can get to Lincoln for eleventh century Lincoln Cathedral, the third biggest in Britain after St Paul's in London and York Minster. Lincoln Castle is also well worth a look, to gaze geekily upon one of the four original remaining copies of the Magna Carta.
