Marshlands Alpacas: Some of the guys

General

  • Adults-only glampsite on the scenic Humber estuary
  • Half an hour from Hull for museums, galleries and nights out
  • Within easy reach of Grimsby breweries for tours and tastings

Plenty of soothing greenery, friendly alpacas to meet and no pesky kids scurrying around breaking the peace… yes please. If that sounds like a top getaway for your good and deserving self, break now for a stay at Marshlands Alpacas, an adults-only site less than five minutes’ drive from the Lincolnshire village of New Holland.

A five minute-stroll from New Holland and the banks of the Humber estuary, this is a prime spot to use as a base for Lincolnshire explores, with plenty of peaceful trails nearby to follow. Walk or bike by the river’s edge to soak up views of the wildlife and passing boats, or wander along one of the public footpaths for easy jaunts to the surrounding villages.

For a touch of grandeur, head instead to Normanby Hall and Gardens, half an hour away, to stroll among Victorian outbuildings, spot Bambi and pals in the deer park and tour the grand old pile of bricks at its centre.

If the deer aren't dear to your heart, hang out with the fluffy herd of alpacas at Marshlands instead. As the evening draws in, there are barbecues and firepits to rent on site to keep toes warm and bodies well fed for more explores, and scenic views across the countryside add a hint of the pastoral to this already peaceful spot. Not sweet enough? Nab a jar of marshlands honey on site as a welcome souvenir.

Hope the owners don’t take offence to my negative feedback. It is the area and absolutely nothing to do with their lovely campsite. Proximity to the Railway Station a five minute walk giving easy access to Barrow Haven and Barton Upon Humber Grimsby and Cleethorpes.
The site itself is quiet with excellent facilities and the Alpacas are full of character.
    A credit to the owners.

    Disliked:

Small pitches about as wide as my motorhome. This is about the area and not the campsite and for information. Not an appealing area as previously commented on.Abandoned caravans and lots of rubbish around the corner (no fault of site). Run down hamlet no facilities or shops.
There is a community centre with a cafe in.Opposite an industrial estate fork lift trucks working 24hrs with hazard warnings sounding. If you are a light sleeper prepared to be disturbed. Basically not near anything within walking distance.
I turned right out of the site for a quick walk and was accosted by a guy from a cottage and told in no uncertain terms this is a private road and he was fed up of stopping people. Maybe the site know who I am talking about but I found him aggressive and off putting.

From the manager...

Not sure how your motorhome is over 11 meters wide the specific pitch you was on was hardstanding/ grass as you ordered at 11meters wide all hedged for privacy and protection from the elements.
The abandoned caravan you refer to is not on our site? Or anywhere close by that I've seen, so not sure what your referring too in the slightest on that 1,
The village is a working class village with a dock that has a wood yard working 6am- 10pm and can be sometimes heard in the distance.
I do not have any control over how the villagers keep their propertys or what they have in their gardens,
The village is very small and consists of a pub Chinese restaurant and a cafe within 10 mins of the site, and a train station and bus route.
It's very clear that we are on a dead end road which is what makes our site so quiet and peaceful, the big yellow gates at the end of the road just past the farmers House with private written on are usually enough of an indicator that your probably not going to get a big hug and a smile if you attemp to go past it. Again abrupt farmers are not our domain either,
99% of our guests love the peace and enjoy the abundance of wild life along the humber estuary, the beautiful walks on the many public rights of way
Around the outskirts of the village,
Or even remain on site for the Alpacas and peaceful camping watching the many wild birds.
Not looking in the local villagers Gardens looking for something to dislike, it's not the prettiest village it is what it is a small quiet old ferry port village with a lot of terraced houses.

We stayed in the Alpaca Shack, which was absolutely amazing! It was spotlessly clean, very cosy and had everything we needed. The toilet/shower block was also immaculate. The site itself is so peaceful and just a short walk from the local village. The owners were very friendly and welcoming and were happy to help with any requests. We took part in feeding the alpacas and sheep, which was so much fun!
We had a pleasant walk to The Haven Inn (probably about 5 minutes away by car) and the food and service there was excellent - amazing home-cooked food! The local takeaways are also happy to deliver to the site.
We would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend the site.

we only stayed one night visiting relatives in the area and found this to be a lovely tranquil site with really clean and relatively new facilities. An adjacent Alpaca field where the owners allowed visitors to enter and feed the animals was a nice touch and a great pub for food and drinks was just a short drive away. We'd have no problem with staying here again if looking for somewhere in the area. Being in flat land there are really no views but the site is surrounded by hedges and fields which is pleasant enough and the mohome pitchers are separated by hedges approx 4ft high high which gives a nice feeling of separation.

This is a must camp site to visit. We had a tent with electric hook up, and found the site was nice and spacious for our pitch. The showers and toilets were spacious and very clean. A great little wash up area outside, but under cover. The little shop, had everything we needed and a nice cold ice cream, on a hot day!

Also some fabulous soft toys made out of alpaca wool! [ just had to buy a souvenir]

Every morning at 09:30 is feeding time, and it was great to be invited to feed the alpacas, who were 🥰 adorable.

The site is 30 minutes drive from cleveleys, so we also got the opportunity to take in the sea air and enjoy the countryside. This site ticks all the boxes for me!

Thank you for making us feel so welcome 🙏

Local attractions

Without any kids in tow, having hols full of grownup-sanctioned adventure is a cinch: head towards Grimsby (half an hour's drive) for tours and tastings at Rutlands Arms Old Mill Brewery and a stop at the taproom of the town’s newest brewery, Docks Beers. Otherwise, venture towards Hull for sedate turns around pleasant gardens, stately manors, museums galore and a must-do stop at The Deep aquarium.

Anyone who’s after something more high-adrenaline and doesn’t mind a slightly longer drive should make the hour and 20-minute journey down the coast to Ingoldmells for a day at Fantasy Island theme park, or continue on to Skeggy for stock car and banger racing at Skegness Raceway.

For days in the great wide open, there’s plenty of choice: the Lincolnshire Wolds are about half an hour away for hiking, biking, riding and geocaching, or a coastal detour to Cleethorpes and its seaside stretch is a top pick for beach and sandcastle days. A trip to Spurn National Nature Reserve shouldn’t be spurned either, even if it’s over an hour away – take a stroll along the sand island for slow-paced explores or sign up for a safari or wildlife-spotting boat trip to see it at its best.
