General

  • Rock pub site near Coalville
  • Charity events, rock nights, bike nights and rideouts
  • Food available all day

Bikers, truckers and live music lovers - this is the very place for you. near Coalville in Leicestershire and its friendly close-knit team sees all sorts from doctors to lawyers, and guarantee a rollicking welcome for those about to rock.

Free birds come to this popular pub from all over the country – and further afield – as a stopover on the way to Donington Park and Mallory, as a base when touring, and for the rock nights (three music stages!), bike nights, real ale and scrumpy.

There are also charity events, rideouts at weekends – and we think we mentioned the real ale (Black Sheep, Speckled Hen, HobGoblin, Pedigree) and scrumpy (treat with caution)? The pub has a garden of remembrance for famous and departed bikers and rockers like John Lennon, Gary Moore and Phil Lynott.

For stomach lining, the café serves all-day breakfasts and other meals during the day and a burger van sells award-winning nosh into the wee hours on weekend evenings, including Aberdeen Angus burgers, hot dogs with Irish recipe sausages, bacon butties and chip butties stuffed with fresh handcut chips. Fancy a takeaway? Order a Chinese or Indian meal from a local restaurant and staff will supply the plates, knives and forks.

Pitches at the Vic are within a helpful staggering distance of the pub; outside loos are available at night when the pub is shut, and showers (and a swimming pool) are available a minute's drive away at the Hermitage Park Leisure Centre, open from 7.30am.

Finally, as there’s ale and scrumpy being consumed, the campsite here is for adults only. Rock on...

Arrived late am to find a secure site to set up our tent and to be told a shuttle bus direct from the Vic to Download festival was leaving in 15 minutes and would even pick us up again once it finished for the night. Even though our stay was brief it was easy to see John is a genuinely nice fella and went out of his way to help.

Owner John was very friendly, kind and helpful (and funny)
Not busy when we were there so very private and secure behind gates.
Fascinating memorabilia, especially enjoyed because we have bikes.
Band playing on the Saturday night, but they did not disturb us. Heard some customers leaving but not a problem, just registered and back to sleep.

    Disliked:

Lack of proper flushing loo outside, but we were warned and could use the pub loo until closing at 3am. Didn't like to try the door in the morning though, when lights weren't on.

Nice place to stay if your into live music 29/08/2016

John the landlord was very helpful and the staff were great. The live music was great and people frequenting the pub we're pleasent. But at this time of year it's quiet so only able to use the pub facilities until 3am at weekends so you need a good bladder until 9am the next day due to there being no toilets on site. Ideal for a cheap weekend away and load motorcycle lovers. And yes it is exactly what it says on tin.

    Disliked:

A little rowdy after closing but to be expected! And the site could do with a little tlc but apart from that no real dislikes.

From the manager...

hi thanks for those kind words,we reply by copying and pasting the e-mail and try to respond to each answer

Summary: Nice place to stay if your into live music
Overall: 6 / 10
Location: 5 / 10 -- we think its a pretty good location,5 mins from J13 M42 or J22 M1 - 15 mins from Donington Park or Mallory - great for Download festival or Bike/Car Racing..bikers from abroad stay over on way to Isle of Man as were about 1/2 way from ferry ports to Liverpool,
Value for Money: 7 / 10 ........Do our best considering the overheads.......
Quality of Accommodation: 10 / 10 Ha Ha thats cheating, you bought your own !!!!!
Facilities/Activities: 6 / 10 were just a working class pub with a bit of grass really but the camping, caravan bit is fenced off hopefully giving the guests a more secure area to stay, cctv is everywhere,32 cameras in all, including the camping area, we've never had any issues but everything is recorded just in case.... Activities, well we can give you plenty to do, if your on a bike, try The Brass Monkey Run,go to our website,www.vicbikerspub.co.uk and click on the map which will enlarge it and bring text up as well, highlighted in blue is some interesting places to visit as your passing through... loads of other places to visit to,the pub needs a coat of paint so if you fancy a working holiday i,m sure we'll find you something to to get handy with !! - Live Music is probably our forte, we have 7 stages which can be pointed out if you decide to visit us. Accomodation info is all on our website, we dont cook all the time but meals from £3.99 will definately fill a hole..chinese and indians are imported in from 2 megga take aways we use, if your looking for something spiced up a bit, we just give you the cuttlery to eat it with, menus on request, and no we dont mind you eating stuff from take aways, you'll still be buying a drink !.
My favourite is :- Chinese = chicken and king prawn with green pepper in black bean sauce and egg fried rice ------- Indian = Lamb Rogan Josh with pillau rice or Mixed Chat massala in a cheese and garlic nan bread - mindblowin !! lol
Customer Service: 7 / 10 sometimes when its really busy, ie MOXTERS OF ROCK - HARD DRIVE - JUZBCUZ - MOXTERS OF MOSH - DOWNLOAD at Donington,The Custom Shows, It can be difficult to be chatty all the time but we hope you understand..........
Child Friendliness: None given OOOOOO NO KIDS HERE PLEASE
Cleanliness: 5 / 10 depends when you come, its always better when the cleaners have just left, lol
Wifi: None given:- yes we have wifi works ok i think...........

And yes it is exactly what it says on tin.:- you didnt spot the portaloo, mmm, the blue and yellow tardis in the main carpark, its ok until the pub opens, sorry should have pointed it out... the 4 cubicle toilet on wheels is out of use as it under restoration, and not in use, it doesnt tell you this but as you need steps to get in we assume no one will try...

A little rowdy after closing but to be expected! And the site could do with a little tlc but apart from that no real dislikes.;- yes we try to tell customers to be quiet when leaving but you always get one dont you,its probably me lol..... ?? TLC --yes must admit the site is nearly finished, and one end corner is like a building site but we leave it like that so you think your in Spain.... we keep the grass cut and as tidy as we have time to, but going back to the working holidays, anyone into DIY wants to lend a hand ha ha.............

Local attractions

Shine on you crazy diamond: if you’re going to Download, Donington Park is just 13 miles away, and if you’re at the Vic any other time of the year there’s hocus pocus all around.

Those feeling energetic can roar along the 30-mile circuit of the Brass Monkey Run around Charnwood Forest with hundreds of other bikers in early January to raise money for the Rainbow Children's Hospice - or complete it at any time of the year on their own (pick up a route map from staff and a celebratory pin badge after you finish).

Bikes, cars and other wheely good transport options are the (Ford?) focus of quite a few attractions and races in Leicestershire. Non-Download, Donington Park lives as a race circuit and is home to the British Motorcycle Grand Prix and the Donington Grand Prix Exhibition, the biggest collection of Grand Prix vehicles in the world.

Get more racing satisfaction at Mallory Park racing circuit at nearby Kirkby Mallory, or for an out of this world trip, the acclaimed National Space Centre just outside Leicester city centre is the country’s biggest attraction devoted to space.

More quietly Nanpantan Reservoir is a good nearby spot for fishing – get a day permit at Soar Valley Tackle in Loughborough or Bennetts Stores in Mountsorrel – and fisheries are at Mallory Park and Charnwood Lake, part of Charnwood Forest with a 15-mile walk around Charnwood Peaks.

We’re also rather fond of Charnwood Forest’s Bradgate Park; look out for the ancient rocks on the hilltop of Old John (not the Rolling Stones).

Urbanites will find the Leicestershire market towns of Loughborough and Ashby-de-la-Zouche easy to get to from Coalville, with the cities of Derby, Leicester and Nottingham also within biking distance.

Loughborough is the biggest settlement in Leicestershire outside Leicester and is well worth a day trip: the market is held every Thursday and Saturday and a farmers’ market once a month (also have a look for the biggest bell foundry in the world in Loughborough’s Queens Park). The heritage Great Central Railway runs from Loughborough to Leicester North and has regular special events and dining – Christmas murder mystery, anyone?

Naturally if you’re staying at the Vic you might want to be shook all night long at some of Leicestershire’s other rock spots: get your groove on in Leicester at the Sumo Bar Restaurant or the Firefly.
