  • Rock music pub near Coalville, with basic pitches for over-21s only
  • Useful location for events at Donington Park and Mallory
  • Regular live music events at the pub; bring your takeaway in
Live music lovers – this is the place for you. Near Coalville in Leicestershire is The Victoria - Bikers Pub, a very friendly and safe pub for over-21s only, with a basic campsite attached. 'Don't expect the Ritz – it's here to provide a convenient stopover or touring base’, say the owners, encouraging you to read the reviews to check it’s the kind of place for you. The pub is open from 5pm on weekdays and 11am at weekends. Free birds come to this popular spot from all over the country – and further afield – as a stopover on the way to Donington Park and Mallory. Drinks are on hand of course, plus food at selected times (burgers, chips and pasties, plus bacon and egg butties at breakfast), with shops and petrol stations a few minutes' walk away. Fancy a takeaway instead? Order your choice of meal from a local restaurant (Chinese, Indian, pizzas and kebabs are all on offer) and staff will supply the plates and cutlery. Pitches at the Vic are within helpful staggering distance of the pub, in a spot that was once a second car park. Guests can use the pub toilets and shower when it’s open, and there’s a portable toilet with shower and flush toilet by the pitches (it’s a tad scruffy but does the job…) A smart new leisure centre is a few minutes’ drive away if you fancy a swim and a shower. There’s often live music in the pub’s function room, so have a look to see what’s on while you're there (please note there’s an extra charge to attend music events).

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Friendly place, good ale, great weather, met some lovely locals. Close to town and supermarkets and walking/cycling paths

Disliked: Facilities are very poor and it’s a shame there’s no food available especially as it’s advertised on the windows! Car park is uneven with tree roots where the tourers stay.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Nice quiet car park pitch with power bargain price. Only stayed to try out newly acquired camper, friendly welcome and no real stress. Good beer selection, didn't try the food. Pub itself is fairly basic but great covered outdoor area. It is a bikers pub so expect some motorbike noise, had a cheesy Billy Idol tribute the night we stayed which was an unexpected bonus and i would stay here again.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.

Local attractions

Those feeling energetic can roar along the 30-mile circuit of the Brass Monkey Run around Charnwood Forest with hundreds of other bikers in early January to raise money for the Rainbow Children's Hospice – or complete it at any time of the year on their own (pick up a route map from staff and a celebratory pin badge after you finish). Bikes, cars and other wheely good transport options are the (Ford?) focus of several attractions in Leicestershire. Outside of Download, Donington Park lives as a race circuit that's home to the British Motorcycle Grand Prix and the Donington Grand Prix Exhibition, the biggest collection of Grand Prix vehicles in the world. Get more racing satisfaction at Mallory Park racing circuit at nearby Kirkby Mallory, or for an out-of-this-world trip, the acclaimed National Space Centre just outside Leicester city centre is the country’s biggest attraction devoted to space. More quietly, Nanpantan Reservoir is a good nearby spot for fishing, and fisheries are at Mallory Park and Charnwood Lake. Also worth a look is Charnwood Forest’s Bradgate Park; look out for the ancient rocks on the hilltop of Old John.
