Barons Cross Inn: Just chilling...

General

  • Family- and dog-friendly pub site a mile from Leominster on the A44
  • A 20-minute drive from Ludlow; 25 minutes from Hereford
  • Home-cooked meals, play area and 24-hour access to facilities

If you’re the type who loves the outdoors but is also rather fond of finishing a day out with a good feed and a proper pint, then it’s likely you’ll do rather well indeed at Barons Cross Inn.

This welcoming pub site is in a highly handy Herefordshire location, a mile outside of Leominster on the A44 and sitting in a sweet spot in the middle of a triangle that has the Malvern Hills, the Shropshire Hills and the Brecon Beacons at its points. All of that means heaps of walks to be had in the vicinity along with pretty villages to potter around (some of the best are linked on the nearby Black & White Trail driving route).

Whatever you choose to do by day, you’ll surely be keen to get back to the pub, where the chef preps meals made with locally sourced ingredients (but kept at pub prices) and there’s a tempting collection of real ales, ciders and wines. Games of pool or darts can be had in the pub, and there’s often something going on (quiz nights, live music and a large summer music festival feature on the schedule here). Outside of organised activity times, pop out to see the aviary to meet the birds, ducks, bantams and quails.

Restless kids and dogs can be sorted at the play area and the neighbouring field respectively, and there’s also free wifi for quieter times. Guests have 24-hour access to the pub’s toilets and shower room, along with washing-up facilities. Breakfasts are available on request on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and you’re welcome to light up a barbecue if you fancy doing your own cooking (there’s a supermarket five minutes’ walk away and a bus stop just outside the pub for easy access to shops and other amenities in town).

Please note

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

The play area is closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Onsite entertainment will not be offered due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Owing to government regulations, groups of 6 or more people are not permitted.

Bookings must not consist of more than 2 different households.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

Minimum spacing of 3 metres between pitches.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Current pub opening times are as follows:

The garden and playground were lovely, my Grandchildren enjoyed it.

    Disliked:

There was no one there when we arrived, it was a free for all to get a pitch. We had paid for a hard standing pitch with electric there were none available. In the end we did manage to get on a grass pitch and run a long lead to find an empty electric socket. There was no food served in the pub as there was an event on!!
There was only one shower for two full fields of vans and tents and only two toilets and one sink in the ladies and gents loos plus no toilet paper to be found a lot of the time. The rubbish was overflowing from the three bins, not good at all.

From the manager...

we are closed a monday and tuesday so apology for that the hard standing pitches are being re done as the stone has gone thin
we do serve food from a thursday till, sunday but as the event brought food stands we didnt supply our food as there was many options from the event that was taking place
we are currently working on new shower block and toilets

On arrival we were told that due to a function over the weekend, the site was over booked. We had to find another site to stay at. We were a group of 3 families on our first holiday in nearly 3 years.
    Very disappointed with the service.

Nice location. Nice little pub on site with park for children.

    Disliked:

More toilets and showers needed. Only 2 cubicles for women and one for men. Was very busy and queues for facilities was long. We were asked to move into an already busy small field due to large field being booked for an event. We were told this had been booked for 3 months yet were not informed of this when booking, 4 hours after pitching we were told to move. Seemed very disorganised. We asked where to fill drinking water carrier up and were told to use chemical waste hose pipe (which we did not use) however after asking other guests there were taps in the small electric field and we did find one tap in the large field but all the way at the bottom of the field. Could do with more taps in the large field. It was a bit of a free for all when pitching, no one checked us in and plots were not marked out so tents and vans were pitched incredibly close.

From the manager...

we are working on new shower block and new toilets also pitches will be numbered and labled for when the pub is closed
