Hardstanding pitch with water and electric

  • Family- and dog-friendly pub site a mile from Leominster on the A44
  • A 20-minute drive from Ludlow; 25 minutes from Hereford
  • Home-cooked meals, play area and 24-hour access to facilities
If you’re the type who loves the outdoors but is also rather fond of finishing a day out with a good feed and a proper pint, then it’s likely you’ll do rather well indeed at Barons Cross Inn. This welcoming pub site is in a highly handy Herefordshire location, a mile outside of Leominster on the A44 and sitting in a sweet spot in the middle of a triangle that has the Malvern Hills, the Shropshire Hills and the Brecon Beacons at its points. All of that means heaps of walks to be had in the vicinity, along with pretty villages to potter around (some of the best are linked on the nearby Black & White Trail driving route). Whatever you choose to do by day, you’ll surely be keen to get back to the pub, where the chef preps meals made with locally sourced ingredients (but kept at pub prices) and there’s a tempting collection of beers, ciders and wines. There's often something going on, such as quiz nights or live music, and everyone is made to feel welcome by the friendly staff. Restless kids and dogs can be entertained at the play area and the neighbouring field respectively. Guests have 24-hour access to a shower room and washing-up facilities. Breakfasts are available every day, and you’re welcome to light up a barbecue if you fancy doing your own cooking (there’s a supermarket five minutes’ walk away and a bus stop just outside the pub for easy access to shops).

Liked Nothing shocking see pictures didn't stay, booked elsewhere

Disliked Looks abandoned we were shocked, nothing like description or pictures on pitchup, looked like everything had be shut down & boarded up on the back of a pub, what looks like takeaway wagons maybe the shower block , rubbish everywhere, even a burnt out car in the corner, not sure why this was advertised as a campsite, just a porta loo in a field with some electrical hook up points. The grass wasn't cut although there was an abandoned lawnmower in the pile of metal next to the few caravans that looked forgotten .

From the manager: Well to anyone reading this, as I imagine you have gathered if you've read all of our other reviews, we have an issue with a person leaving odd one star reviews in various guises for their own dark purposes, in amongst the very many 10 star reviews left by legitimate customers. We will leave it to you to decide if this person's photos of clearly cut grass and our overnight portaloo contradict the very many photos taken this month of our facilities and the lovely things our other campers have said. I'm pretty sure if there was a ' burned out car' (lol there obviously isn't) that this individual would have taken a photograph of it.
We aren't going to dignify this 'review' with any sort of meningful response, other than to say that the £3 deposit paid to Pitchup fpr their booking is a very cheap way of ruining someone's business, but that really is their cross to bear not ours, as there has to be something significantly wrong with a person to engage in such a course of behaviour. I hope they get better soon.

Liked Everything. Site was tidy and well managed, pitches are nice and level. The staff are really friendly and helpful and couldn't do enough for us. The toilets were clean and tidy and the shower room was great. It was like a proper room, not cramped in any way, and really spicious with lots of hot water and open all night as well. The beer garden is lovely and the beer is very good here i am pleased to say. Best of all though, is the food. The food is absolutely amazing. I had the best ribs I have ever had anywhere. We will definitely be back for our main holiday with the kids. Very glad we found this.

Disliked Absolutely, nothing except the WiFi isn't great but the owners tell me they are getting full.fibre and boosters to compensate for this, so I look forward to that being the case when we return.

Liked Nothing. There was nothing to like

Disliked I have never stayed anywhere like it! It was beyond filthy dirty. The toilets in the pub were a disgrace. I have seen the owners responses to previous bad reviews. They say they clean them regularly, they certainly don't, and they don't top up the loo roll. They also say to raise any concerns with them but surely guests should not have to ask them to clean the toilets or to provide toilet paper. We used the toilets at around 9.30 in the morning and they were revolting! No loo roll, soggy toilet roll all over the floor and they stunk. My husband went into the gents and there was vomit all over the floor and all over the toilet seat. Later in the day the floor had been cleaned but the toilet seat was still covered. There was hardly anyone on site so there is no way that mess was from that morning. As for the portaloo, there are no words. Again, this is not cleaned and I have photos to prove it. There is one shower on site and it is swimming in water when you walk in. At least provide a clean mop and bucket so people can clean up after themselves. The lock on the door didn't work either and yes, I raised this with the owners, she took note and walked off! The site itself is not well maintained. The hard standing pitches are a mess, grass isn't cut and its just run down. They say it is a work in progress. I would suggest it needs to be closed while the work is done as it is not fit for people to stay on!!!

Liked The food in the pub was nice and the drinks were cheap. The bar lady was lovely.

Disliked There was only one shower and it opened at 10 but it was always dirty and the lock didn’t work.
There was a portaloo to use when the pub toilets were closed as they opened at 10. Unfortunately the portaloo was dirty all the time and the lock didn’t work.
If the shower and toilet locked and were clean then this would have been nice.

From the manager: Not at all sure where to start with this. 3/10? Really? Firstly factual things, the shower is 24 hour, we never lock it, so that is absolutely incorrect, some other people staying actually say in their reviews that they like the fact the shower is 24 hours, so please don't take our word for it. Yes there is only one shower but we are not a huge campsite and it generally does fine for us and our guests. Secondly the toilets are not dirty, they are cleaned every day, toilet paper is checked etc and they are checked for cleanliness throughout the day as well. If you are talking about the odd muddy footprint then sure, we'll take that as we are an outdoorsy site, but very much feel that 3/10 is unfair to say the least. We can't remember you, as we can't remember the other lower end reviewers either but we were full this month, but we do notice however that we get consistant 10/10 as a geneal rule and that all of the random lower score reviews only have one review to their name which is the one for us, so we're not sure what is going on here. Very sad and disappointed at this point tbh as we all work so hard to make sure everyone has a nice time in a good environment.

Liked Lovely campsite, friendly staff & great pub.
Campsite is fairly even & well maintained. shower & pub toilets clean & modern. Portaloo for night time use. Playground for children & even a bouncy castle this weekend.
Pub was reasonably priced, well stocked & the food amazing. Had dinner & breakfast here & would recommend both.
Close to Leominster which is a lovely town.

Disliked Did not dislike anything really. Yes road was a little noisy but certainly did not keep me awake. Pub a little tired in places but would def return.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked Basically everything. It was so relaxed, friendly staff always willing to help or chat, clean, tidy level solid pitches, with electric and water at every pitch, within close proximity to the pub which opens at 10 for breakfast and serves food all the way through until 9 at night and stocked some lovely gins as well! The food was magnificent, not the sort of thing that you expect at a small provincial pub, very well chosen ingredients cooked to perfection. We ate three meals there. The chef really knows his stuff and I had one of the best steaks I have had anywhere. Everything was clear, we checked in at the pub, the landlady showed us where everything was, and was really warm and friendly. The shower was open all night which was really nice and the pub toilets and the overnight portable toilet were clean. There is a baby changer in the ladies and an absolutely huge bouncy castle in the beer garden which was full of kids. For somewhere which has minimal rules, it was really a lovely place to stay as everyone was respectful and happy. Lots of kids, lots of dogs, lots of people eating in the beer garden, very Darling Buds of May, and a rare gem of a place. Lovely! No wonder the place was packed. We will definitely be back soon!

Disliked They had some internet problems whilst we were there but did say the wi-fi isn't always the best anyway. If you are in larger vehicle the track is slightly narrow but perfectly manageable even for really big things like us as long as you are paying attention, but that is just being nit-picky and is out of the control of the owners, so nothing really to report here.

Local attractions

Start with a little stroll around Leominster, a mile away – it’s a handsome market town with a grand priory and streets lined with independent shops to poke around in. For more active times, it’s also got a swimming pool and a golf course (about 10 minutes’ drive from the pub). If you’d like to take your urban wanders a little further, check out the foodies’ fave Ludlow (20 minutes’ drive) or head into Hereford (25 minutes) to see the cathedral, the Mappa Mundi exhibition and the Hereford Cider Museum. Keeping it all a little more country, venture to the Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre (20 minutes) to get up close to the animals, wander through Westonbury Mill Water Gardens (15 minutes) or learn a little bit about cheesemaking at Monkland Cheese Dairy (five minutes). If you’re heading out for a hike, the Shropshire Hills, Malvern Hills and Brecon Beacons are all within 40 minutes’ drive.
