General

  • Peaceful site on a working farm 15 minutes' walk from Painswick
  • Close to the Cotswolds Way and other walking/bike trails
  • Fishing lake and lodge with kitchen and woodburning stove

What a cracking spot for Cotswolds capers – pick a patch at Painswick Glamping and you’ll be in a prime position for pottering around this pretty part of the world.

Want a rural retreat? You’ll be right pleased with this peaceful place – it’s on a working farm, surrounded by fields and with its own coarse fishing lake for days of dawdling about by the water. It’s an off-grid kind of place, but there’s a small kitchen with toaster, fridge, freezer and kettle. Campfire cookery is very much encouraged too – made all the more tasty by snaffling some of the farm’s free-range eggs or home-reared beef.

Prefer your holiday hideaway to have easy access to townie facilities? That’s all sorted here too, for Painswick Glamping (as the name may possibly suggest) is an easy 15 minutes’ amble from the little town of Painswick, a place of pubs, cafés and independent shops. Further pints for country pub enthusiasts are a few minutes’ drive away in Slad, Sheepscombe and Cranham.

Of course, you could always get your boots on and take a hike to a pub instead. Or, if you’re after something a little lengthier, perhaps a few days out on the Cotswolds Way might be more your strolling or cycling style? Either way, rest assured that you can come back to a nice warm shower in the smart wetroom, before trotting over to the communal lodge to feed the woodburning stove and curl up on the sofa with a well-earned drink.

Sheltered and peaceful rural campsite just a few minutes walk down the hill from the town. Ideal location for walkers exploring the Cotswold Way, Wysis Way or Laurie Lee Country.

Small camping field with a picnic table and plenty of soft grass. Lots of bird life around the adjoining pond. Clean facilities and a warm shower. Large communal lodge with a comfy couch, basic kitchenette (microwave, kettle, etc), and a deck by the pond.

No cars next to tents, so quiet with no door slamming competitions. Quiet out-of-the-way location. Only 4 pitches. Excellent toilet and shower. Level pitches. Good views. Very dark at night, so good for stars. Many owls calling throughout the night. After introduction, the owner left us to ourselves. Games room and veranda to lounge about. Kitchen with microwave and fridge. Trees for shade in hot weather. Friendly cows in nearby field.

    Disliked:

Pitches a bit smaller than we are used to, but it's adults only and the other campers were friendly and quiet. Some midges due to nearby pond so take some insect repellent.

A beautiful, idyllic setting. Loved that there was only 4 pictures. To be able to sit by the lake was a delight and the club house/kitchen was such a welcome bonus, especially when travelling light and with it getting dark at 8pm these days. Great to chill out, read after dark and have a cold glass of wine!

An absolute gem. Will be back!

    Disliked:

My only concern was there being 1 toilet and 1 shower (in the same room too) - could potentially be a real pain if there was a "full house" of campers staying. Fine for me though, as it was midweek during school term

Everything! We have been several times before and will continue to return.
It is quiet and beautiful. Excellent field for pitching a tent. Fantastic lodge with small kitchen, log burner, pool table, sofa and tables; the deck outside has more seating and overlooks the lake. Lovely shower and toilet, with an additional fisherman’s toilet. Car parking next to field.
The peace and quiet, beautiful views and wildlife all around makes it a perfect escape and place to unwind.

    - The pod itself is great, it's slightly out of the way on the campsite, very relaxed. Lots of bits and pieces provided to help.
    - Good BBQ with utensils & firepit.
    - Lovely site, about 5/10 minutes walk from the town. Very quiet with a nice pond if you're into fishing.
    - Nice walks in the surrounding area (guide provided, and also available in the town)
    - Nice town, with a couple of decent pubs and cafes.

Local attractions

Start your stay with a wander around Painswick – it’ll all be very painless, as you can get to the gorgeous Painswick Rococo Garden in around 25 minutes on foot, or to Painswick Beacon in 40 for some splendid views. A scenic golf course is a few minutes’ drive north; handily in town are spa days that may appeal to non-golfing partners.

And once you’ve pootled around Painswick for a bit… well, there’s plenty more to explore in the rest of the pretty Cotswolds (it didn’t get an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty title for nowt, you know). Long-distance walkers might hit the 100-mile Cotswolds Way, but there are heaps of other strolls around local villages, or you can roam on bikes or horseback (from a stables 20 minutes away).

Some of the top spots to set your sights on might include the animal antics at Prinknash Bird and Deer Park (10 minutes’ drive), Cotswold Wildlife Park (45 minutes) or Cotswold Farm Park (45 minutes) and history-tinged rambles at Woodchester Mansion (half an hour) and Chedworth Roman Villa (40 minutes). Foodies may like to stop off in Stroud (15 minutes) to hit the farmers’ market and tour the brewery.
