  • Peaceful site on a working farm 15 minutes' walk from Painswick
  • Close to the Cotswolds Way and other walking/bike trails
  • Fishing lake and lodge with kitchen and woodburning stove
What a cracking spot for Cotswolds capers – pick a patch at Painswick Glamping and you’ll be in a prime position for pottering around this pretty part of the world. Want a rural retreat? You’ll be right pleased with this peaceful place – it’s on a working farm, surrounded by fields and with its own coarse fishing lake for days of dawdling about by the water. It’s an off-grid kind of place, but there’s a small kitchen with toaster, fridge, freezer and kettle. Campfire cookery is very much encouraged too – made all the more tasty by snaffling some of the farm’s free-range eggs or home-reared beef. Prefer your holiday hideaway to have easy access to townie facilities? That’s all sorted here too, for Painswick Glamping (as the name may possibly suggest) is an easy 15 minutes’ amble from the little town of Painswick, a place of pubs, cafés and independent shops. Further pints for country pub enthusiasts are a few minutes’ drive away in Slad, Sheepscombe and Cranham. Of course, you could always get your boots on and take a hike to a pub instead. Or, if you’re after something a little lengthier, perhaps a few days out on the Cotswolds Way might be more your strolling or cycling style? Either way, rest assured that you can come back to a nice warm shower in the smart wetroom, before trotting over to the communal lodge to feed the woodburning stove and curl up on the sofa with a well-earned drink.

What customers say

This little gem's a ripper – peaceful, quiet, with a cracking lake. Campers loved the friendly hosts, top-notch showers, and communal kitchen. Great spot for walks near Painswick. Just a heads-up on the loos and the uphill trek back to the Cotswold Way; managers are onto it.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked We were originally planning to stay at Painswick Glamping for just 2 nights, on a trip to visit WWT Slimbridge Wetland. However, we were having such a fun time (despite picking a very rainy few days to visit!) that we decided to stay for an extra night, which was no problem at all!

The campsite is small and peaceful, with only four tent pitches, and we were alone for 2 nights out of our 3 night stay.

The kitchen facilities are super convenient, with a kettle, toaster, fridge, freezer, and plug sockets to charge up your devices. The bathroom is well maintained, with a warm shower.

There is a lovely pond which you can see from your tent, and plenty of birds and wildlife all around.

Would definitely recommend this site for fairly new campers like ourselves.

Painswick is a picturesque village, with some pretty buildings, 2 cafes, 2 pubs, a corner shop, and a little tourist information centre by the church. However, it is very quiet with not much to do in the village itself. I would recommend driving the 15-20 mins to Gloucester or Stroud during your stay if you want to go to a bigger supermarket or do any activities.

Also, WWT Slimbridge is a must visit while in the area if you love birds!

As said in the description, this is a working farm, so expect to hear the cows early in the morning.

Disliked Only warning I would give to future visitors is that the drive down from the town to the site is a very steep hill with a few sharp turns, and a narrow road. Would not recommend for nervous drivers or very large vehicles!

Liked What a wonderful campsite. So peaceful, calm and relaxing. Pitches were really smooth, the toilet/shower was clean and hot, the kitchen space was wonderful and such a lovely touch of the owner popping by to say hello. Will definitely be back!

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Fantastic site. Beautiful surroundings. Level pitches. Pretty fishing lake. Indoor kitchen area with sink, kettle, microwave and fridge. Good sized toilet and shower. Large sofa and tables, indoors. Plenty of picnic benches. Tall trees around the lake giving shade when needed. Very friendly and helpful owner.
Short stroll, up hill into the pretty village of Painswick with shop, cafés, chemist.
Ideal for those like me walking the Cotswold Way.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Excellent large flat area for pitching the tent, easy access to drinking water, building with a kettle, microwave and sofas, chairs and tables from which I could watch the tortential rain falling on the lake whilst charging my phone. Walk to the site was downhill from the Cotswold Way which was good after a long hike (although you obviously have to walk back up it when leaving). Conveniently placed food shop and a cafe half way between the trail and the site.

Liked Spacious space, just before The season starts. I was there for one night only but its was well worth to be. Lots of walk trails around and fresh, morning breeze from the fields.

Disliked No dislikes. I do not know how about The peak season there.

Local attractions

Start your stay with a wander around Painswick – it’ll all be very painless, as you can get to the gorgeous Painswick Rococo Garden in around 25 minutes on foot, or to Painswick Beacon in 40 for some splendid views. A scenic golf course is a few minutes’ drive north; handily in town are spa days that may appeal to non-golfing partners. And once you’ve pootled around Painswick for a bit… well, there’s plenty more to explore in the rest of the pretty Cotswolds (it didn’t get an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty title for nowt, you know). Long-distance walkers might hit the 100-mile Cotswolds Way, but there are heaps of other strolls around local villages, or you can roam on bikes or horseback (from a stables 20 minutes away). Some of the top spots to set your sights on might include the animal antics at Prinknash Bird and Deer Park (10 minutes’ drive), Cotswold Wildlife Park (45 minutes) or Cotswold Farm Park (45 minutes) and history-tinged rambles at Woodchester Mansion (half an hour) and Chedworth Roman Villa (40 minutes). Foodies may like to stop off in Stroud (15 minutes) to hit the farmers’ market and tour the brewery.
