The Cider Orchard: Orchard pitches

General

  • Dog-friendly farm site on an apple orchard in south Gloucestershire
  • A 15-minute drive from the Cotswold District; 35 minutes from Bristol
  • Village shop and pub with cask ales and food within walking distance

Peel back the layers of south Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds from The Cider Orchard… part of an established four-acre apple orchard, this family-run farm site is lined with cider and cooking apple trees planted by the family in the 1940s and surrounded by a rather splendid Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

This is a fine spot for a break packed with variety, as The Cider Orchard is a 15-minute drive away from the edge of the Cotswolds. At the same time, cities such as Bristol (35 minutes for its edgy harbour and artsy centre) and Gloucester (35 minutes for the iconic docks and Roman history) are still within reach, thanks to the hard tracks around the site and the M5 15 minutes' drive away.

Wave to the neighbours as you unwind on the peaceful open green spaces… as a small family-run farm, there are sheep and horses surrounding the site. The Tyndale Monument (in memory of a translator of the New Testament born nearby) looks over the orchard (a 20-minute walk uphill) and in the other direction, there are views across rural south Gloucestershire and south Wales.

Based on the edge of the village of North Nibley, there’s a village shop 10 minutes’ walk away and a traditional country pub serving cask ales, cider and tasty meals made from locally sourced products.

And when you’re in need of a light freshening up, there’s an amenities block five minutes’ walk away from the site or a large portaloo and sunken waste tank on the site.

Not much to like in all honesty

    Disliked:

I arrived at dusk, there were no visible signposts as to where the orchard was. Not a single sole to be seen and absolutely no help from the owners and no response after phoning multiple times. It was very expensive costing me £41 for 2 nights and all I could see were porta loos dotted around the orchard. There was absolutely no lighting and as a solo traveller decided not to stay, despite as I said paying out £41. Since returning home I still haven't managed to get in contact with anyone

the views from the Orchard are truly beautiful. The owner guided us in via the telephone, as the lane is narrow and you need to travel through the farmyard to get to the orchard. The night was very peaceful with very little light pollution.
We walked into the village and had a pint in the local (dog friendly) and found the little community run store / coffee shop (dog friendly) where we purchased fab coffee and cake along with fresh bread and some used books.

We stayed in the orchard and liked the isolation.

    Disliked:

The view was spoilt by an old bonfire tip and a disused motorcycle track.
The portable toilets were very unpleasant.
The only toilet in the stable block was not secured to the floor, the shower drain was blocked so the shower was not usable.
The farmyard was more like a scrapyard.
We were booked for 2 nights, but left after only one night.

The site was open and spacious with a level camping field well kept as in short grass and nice views.

    Disliked:

The facilities were a little lacking one shower with toilet cubicle and 3 portaloos which were a little unkempt. We managed okay because the site was virtually empty but it may be a struggle if nearer capacity.

We stayed in the star gazer tent to celebrate my birthday and it was fantastic! Beautifully furnished inside with a lovely big comfy bed. Our friends were able to camp close by in their camper vans. The setting was lovely in the orchard with wonderful views and a short stroll to the pub. Bernard and Josephine were perfect hosts. Thank you for a wonderful stay :-)

Take a tractor ride, meet the farm animals or head out across the boating lake… if the kids are tagging along for the holiday, Cattle Country Farm Park (10 minutes’ drive) has lots of child-friendly activities and playgrounds where they can let off some steam.

Intent on hiking far and wide? Combine a walk with wildlife spotting in the wetlands at WWT Slimbridge (20 minutes). Then, take yourself off to Stinchcombe Hill (15 minutes) for a hilly circular hike on the Cotswolds Way through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and past a splendid golf course.

Keep a golf club handy if that’s your thing, as you can stop on this course or go over to the Cotswold Edge Golf Club (10 minutes) for a scenic game on an old Cotswolds course.

If you want to familiarise yourself with some history, Berkeley Castle (10 minutes) has a taste of the 12th century, while the National Trust site at Woodchester Park (20 minutes) has an incomplete Victorian mansion with parkland, lakes and a boathouse walk.
