General
- Dog-friendly farm site on an apple orchard in south Gloucestershire
- A 15-minute drive from the Cotswold District; 35 minutes from Bristol
- Village shop and pub with cask ales and food within walking distance
Peel back the layers of south Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds from The Cider Orchard… part of an established four-acre apple orchard, this family-run farm site is lined with cider and cooking apple trees planted by the family in the 1940s and surrounded by a rather splendid Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
This is a fine spot for a break packed with variety, as The Cider Orchard is a 15-minute drive away from the edge of the Cotswolds. At the same time, cities such as Bristol (35 minutes for its edgy harbour and artsy centre) and Gloucester (35 minutes for the iconic docks and Roman history) are still within reach, thanks to the hard tracks around the site and the M5 15 minutes' drive away.
Wave to the neighbours as you unwind on the peaceful open green spaces… as a small family-run farm, there are sheep and horses surrounding the site. The Tyndale Monument (in memory of a translator of the New Testament born nearby) looks over the orchard (a 20-minute walk uphill) and in the other direction, there are views across rural south Gloucestershire and south Wales.
Based on the edge of the village of North Nibley, there’s a village shop 10 minutes’ walk away and a traditional country pub serving cask ales, cider and tasty meals made from locally sourced products.
And when you’re in need of a light freshening up, there’s an amenities block five minutes’ walk away from the site or a large portable toilet and sunken waste tank on the site.

Intent on hiking far and wide? Combine a walk with wildlife spotting in the wetlands at WWT Slimbridge (20 minutes). Then, take yourself off to Stinchcombe Hill (15 minutes) for a hilly circular hike on the Cotswolds Way through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and past a splendid golf course.
Keep a golf club handy if that’s your thing, as you can stop on this course or go over to the Cotswold Edge Golf Club (10 minutes) for a scenic game on an old Cotswolds course.
If you want to familiarise yourself with some history, Berkeley Castle (10 minutes) has a taste of the 12th century, while the National Trust site at Woodchester Park (20 minutes) has an incomplete Victorian mansion with parkland, lakes and a boathouse walk.
