The Cider Orchard: Orchard pitches

General

  • Dog-friendly farm site on an apple orchard in south Gloucestershire
  • A 15-minute drive from the Cotswold District; 35 minutes from Bristol
  • Village shop and pub with cask ales and food within walking distance

Peel back the layers of south Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds from The Cider Orchard… part of an established four-acre apple orchard, this family-run farm site is lined with cider and cooking apple trees planted by the family in the 1940s and surrounded by a rather splendid Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

This is a fine spot for a break packed with variety, as The Cider Orchard is a 15-minute drive away from the edge of the Cotswolds. At the same time, cities such as Bristol (35 minutes for its edgy harbour and artsy centre) and Gloucester (35 minutes for the iconic docks and Roman history) are still within reach, thanks to the hard tracks around the site and the M5 15 minutes' drive away.

Wave to the neighbours as you unwind on the peaceful open green spaces… as a small family-run farm, there are sheep and horses surrounding the site. The Tyndale Monument (in memory of a translator of the New Testament born nearby) looks over the orchard (a 20-minute walk uphill) and in the other direction, there are views across rural south Gloucestershire and south Wales.

Based on the edge of the village of North Nibley, there’s a village shop 10 minutes’ walk away and a traditional country pub serving cask ales, cider and tasty meals made from locally sourced products.

And when you’re in need of a light freshening up, there’s an amenities block five minutes’ walk away from the site or a large portaloo and sunken waste tank on the site.

Please note

Minimum spacing of 10 metres between pitches.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Nice view from the field. The field was flat and there was a table available.

    Disliked:

No signage or information. I did not find the shower or the toilets on the field or neighbouring farm.

The price is quite high for what was offered.

Beautiful location within walking distance of a village shop and pub. And a short drive to nearby towns for a wider variety of shops. Peaceful location but can still faintly hear cars driving so you don’t feel completely isolated. It wasn’t overly busy so we had plenty of room between pitches.

    Disliked:

Hard to find as there weren’t any signs, and the postcode on apple maps took us down the wrong lane. Managed to find it thanks to someone’s previous review about going down the Lane to the right of Nibley House. Hard to find where the shower facility was and never managed to find it but didn’t mind.

Site was gorgeous, beautiful views along the Severn Valley. Wildlife abundant. Farm owner (Bernard) friendly and approachable - though it is a working farm so do not expect to see him much, as he is busy being a farmer. Portaloos clean and in good working order. Shower room only a couple of minutes walk away, tidy and serviceable, very welcome facility to have. Village pub no more than 5 minutes away with friendly staff. Quiet pitch, not a busy site. Overall very pleased with my stay. Cotswold Way and other footpaths very accessible from site.

Beautiful quiet site, good value for money, plenty of space between tents and an amazing view. Water tap on the field and the portaloos were clean the whole time. Was really nice that you just are able to drive into the site and pick your place- no check in etc required. We did also meet one of the owners at one point though and she was absolutely lovely and chatted to us for a while :)

Bring your own stuff for fires though- there’s no fire pits etc.

    Disliked:

The signing wasn’t great. We struggled to find the site and then also to locate the shower facilities.

The campsite is in a beautiful location with great walks and good views straight from the campsite.
The owner and staff were very friendly and welcoming.
Quite a quirky/eccentric setup on a working farm.
The orchard has a great atmosphere with trees breaking up the pitches and a lovely natural feel.

    Disliked:

The portaloo toilets are what they are, there is only one shower for the whole campsite and there isn't anywhere to wash dishes etc. We were aware of this before we went so it's not a complaint exactly, but even a basic toilet, shower and wash block would make this campsite absolutely perfect.

Intent on hiking far and wide? Combine a walk with wildlife spotting in the wetlands at WWT Slimbridge (20 minutes). Then, take yourself off to Stinchcombe Hill (15 minutes) for a hilly circular hike on the Cotswolds Way through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and past a splendid golf course.

Keep a golf club handy if that’s your thing, as you can stop on this course or go over to the Cotswold Edge Golf Club (10 minutes) for a scenic game on an old Cotswolds course.

If you want to familiarise yourself with some history, Berkeley Castle (10 minutes) has a taste of the 12th century, while the National Trust site at Woodchester Park (20 minutes) has an incomplete Victorian mansion with parkland, lakes and a boathouse walk.
