Chapel Farm Caravan Park: Mixed pitch

General

  • Adults-only site on a scenic smallholding in the Peak District
  • A mile from Hartington and 20 minutes’ drive from Buxton and Bakewell
  • Dog-friendly walks right from the park on ancient routes and trackways

If you’re after a blissful base in the Peak District, Chapel Farm Caravan Park – set on a smallholding with first-rate views over the surrounding countryside – might just be your kind of place.

But before you click book and start packing the kids and smart devices, it’s to be noted that this Derbyshire destination has two key USPs to make it even more of a restful respite: an adults-only policy and limited mobile phone signal…

This is a place to digitally detox among the lush greenery or ask the dog if they want to go walkies – four-legged friends are permitted at the park as long as they’re well-behaved and kept on a lead. Set off on trails from the grounds through ancient routes and trackways, past old stone cottages and buildings like the early 17th-century Hartington Hall (a mile) and Charles Cotton Hotel (a mile and a half).

People-pleasing Peak District paths are also close by – dawdle over to Beresford Dale, leading to Wovescote Dale and the famed Dovedale limestone valley stepping stones (25 minutes’ drive), then head to Upper Dove valley on quieter trails enroute to the Norman-era Pilsbury Castle and Crowdecote village (15 minutes).

Prefer to potter with a bit more purpose? Venture to the villages of Hartington and Biggin (both less than a mile and a half) to run errands at the local shops or, better yet, to pull up a pew at one of the pubs.

This site is fully committed to getting visitors back to basics, so it has no showers or toilets, but a chemical disposal point is available.

Please note

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

Tents are not accepted at this park.

This site has no on-site toilet and shower facilities.

Friendly lady but we had missed the fact that there are no showers or loos so moved on elsewhere.

    Disliked:

Read the very small print. This is very basic with no showers or loos….(although the price is the same as much better equipped sites in the region).

From the manager...

Sorry to get this review but it does state on the web site that we have no shower or toilet facilities. Can not agree about the price as I feel we are very competative with other sites in the area. Sorry you were unhappy but had you not driven off I could have helped you more to find a suitable site nearby.

Beautiful site stunning views from the pitch, the location is a small hamlet very peaceful but easy walk to Harrington. The the farmer was really helpful and informative access was easier than we thought we only stayed one night but we’ll be back for longer next time.

Friendly and helpful proprietors. Beautiful views. Level pitch. Friendly farm dogs. Very pleasant walk to Hartington village, either through the fields or via the road. Be warned, the road back is steep. Access to the Tissington Trail within half a mile, but be prepared for a steep, rocky descent down which you must manhandle your bike. Fine if just walking.

Best thing though is that the site is for adults only.

    Disliked:

When the site is full, there would be little space between units. However when we were there, there were only five units so I have no complaints.

Everything. So peaceful with very nice views looking out onto rolling hills, no light pollution so on a clear night the sky was full of stars. We were blessed with some fantastic Mediterranean like weather on our stay here. The site owners were so laid back and friendly. We had the best pitch on site with great views from the awning and caravan too. Some folk mention that the Wi-Fi signal wasn’t great but we had decent coverage and even got a fantastic picture on the television too, we only watched the final of the Euro’s then put the tele away for the rest of our stay. We had electric hook up and it must of been 16 amp as we had no issues with boiling the kettle and using hair dryers etc. The site has no facilities but we used our on onboard facilities without any problems. There’s some great walks from the site and a short drive to places like Buxton, Matlock, Cromford, Ashbourne ect. There’s a couple of local pubs in handy reach but we didn’t go to either of them. There’s a couple of friendly donkeys in the field along with some cattle. The site has easy access too. In a nutshell a well worth visit and as some reviewers mentioned the farm yard smells but we never once got any unpleasant wiffs. Some pitches are on a slope but ours was very level and didn’t need any blocks for levelling. Thanks Steve and thanks for letting me have a tour around the old lorries in the barn.

Local attractions

Chapel Farm’s in the south of the Peak District National Park, an area known for its limestone scenery as well as spa towns like Buxton (20 minutes’ drive). Referred to as the most complete Regency town in the UK, this Georgian-era settlement is worth a look for an amble around the shops of the Cavendish Arcade set inside the original thermal baths.

Just outside town, pootle towards the limestone Poole’s Cavern or go further to Castleton (40 minutes) in the High Peak for four show caves, including Blue John Cavern where the semi-precious Blue John mineral is mined.

Have a gander at other eye-catching attractions in the area too on trips to stately homes such as Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall, both half an hour from the site, or drive the 20 minutes to Bakewell and feast your eyes on the lovely River Wye setting while sating your stomach with a Bakewell pudding.

Must see

  • Haddon Hall (6.4 miles)
  • Chatsworth (8.8 miles)
  • Sir Richard Arkwright's Masson Mills (9.2 miles)

National Trust

  • Winster Market House (5.8 miles)
  • The Old Manor (11.2 miles)
