Tagg Lane Caravan Site: Hardstandings

General

  • Touring caravan park near Monyash in the Peak District National Park
  • A 10-minute drive to Bakewell and 15 minutes to Buxton
  • Ice cream café and farm shop next door: easy access to High Peak Trail

Fond of an ice cream or few on your holidays? It’s fair to say you’ll settle in well at Tagg Lane Caravan Site, in the Derbyshire countryside just outside the village of Monyash. This is a sister business to the excellent Tagg Lane Dairy, which produces artisan gelato from its own organic Jersey milk… and just happens to be next door to the caravan park.

It’s not just ice cream that awaits next door: the café also turns that milk into gorgeous milkshakes and creamy coffees, and serves up Belgian waffles and cakes. Meanwhile, the farm shop has free-range eggs and grass-fed beef products to take away – so that’s your evening meal and a good breakfast sorted too.

Clearly with all this tasty food around to consume, you’re going to need to work up an appetite (or work off a few calories…) So it’s handy that the site is surrounded by the splendid scenery of the Peak District National Park, where there are many miles of trail to walk or cycle along. The High Peak Trail, linking Ashbourne and Buxton along an old railway line, is a short walk from the caravan park (and bikes can be hired nearby too), and Lathkill Dale is around three miles away. Dogs are welcome at the park so feel free to bring them along for the outings too.

Not eaten enough yet? It’s a 10-minute drive to Derbyshire’s famed pudding hub, Bakewell. It’s a 15-minute drive to lovely Buxton too, and 20 minutes to Chatsworth – all are good places to pick up a bit more local produce.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

This site has no on-site toilet and shower facilities.

Isolation away from main farm. Location central to many walks, rides, pubs/restaurants and other attractions. Staff were available if required but weren’t pestering to check in everyday which is a nice change from some. Clean facilities for water & grey/black waste. Lovely views and dark sky but also close enough being on a quiet B road.

    Disliked:

Potentially would feel a small site if fully booked.

It was a small site and during our stay there was only 1 other caravan so no noisy neighbours. The site is adjacent to a dairy farm and i can imagine a certain times of the year it will be rather pongy! But we were lucky and now over powering smells for our visit. The positive of the farm is the ice cream shop next door which is lovely, and the cows coming in for milking. There are no facilities on site on the waste drainage area and water tap which were all perfectly adequate. The lid for the drainage was a bit heavy.

The site is near a lovely village and not far from bakewell. It is next to a road and i guess this must be a main route between the villages because it was noisy at times but not constantly so, it is also under a flight path. Again we only noticed it because the site was so quite! We all slept through the night so the noise isnt that bad and all perfectly livable.

The views were stunning though. Not another caravan in site just rolling hills. Beautiful.

    Disliked:

Not the camps fault but a turn coming through bakewell on the way to site had us holding our breath. Its one where you have to rely on other driver not being selfish and to allow you through otherwise you end up blocking a roundabout.

Local attractions

Take the 10-minute drive to Bakewell to sample the famed pudding that takes its name, then head out on the Monsal Trail, a great 8.5-mile trail that runs through some spectacular scenery and takes in old railway tunnels along the way too.

The Tissington Trail is a couple of miles away for more walking, while Miller’s Dale (15 minutes’ drive) and Dovedale (25 minutes) are also good picks for a hike. Head to Arbor Low Stone Circle and Gib Hill Barrow (five minutes) or Hidden Druids Caves (20 minutes) to mix a hit of history in with your rambles.

A wander around the spa town of Buxton (15 minutes) is a rather more gentle way to spend a day – although it does also have a Go Ape adventure park for any restless types that need more activity. There’s plenty to keep you busy on a day out at the Chatsworth estate: explore the house and gardens, meet the animals at the farmyard or let the kids go wild on the playground’s rope park, water play area and trampoline.

Must see
